Central MA: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest honored the co-captains of the College of the Holy Cross football team, Daryl Brown and Dominic Randolph, with the Dr. H. Martin Deranian Fellowship Award on Jan. 22 for initiating a "match" program through BBBS between the Boys and Girls Club in Great Brook Valley and the Holy Cross football team over two years ago...Also from BBBSCM: Justin Marshall and his mentor Patrick Stephan sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Red Sox Mentoring Challenge recognition event at Fenway Park in Boston last month... Western MA: Also at the RSMC event, Richard Wyner, a mentor from Big Brothers Big Sisters Hampden County, and his mentee, Chucky McCoy, spoke to the attendees about mentoring...One of Springfield School Volunteers' mentors, Brad Sperry, has mentored for more than 40 years and is featured in the Jan. 29 edition of the Wilbraham-Hampden Times as an exemplary mentor. National Mentoring Month a success!
January was a busy month for MMP and programs statewide. We're happy to announce that by the end of the month, we had received more than 160 mentor referrals that were forwarded to programs across the state.
Here's a rundown of what's still to come as well as some highlights from the January campaign. More details can be found on our National Mentoring Month page.
- A snowstorm on Jan. 28 forced the rescheduling of the 3rd Annual Youth Mentoring Day at the State House to Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- MMP and State Street Corporation hosted the 3rd Annual Youth Mentoring Forum on Jan. 22. It was attended by 150 corporate, foundation, and other sector leaders, plus mentoring program representatives.
- 44 matches and guests celebrated mentoring at the annual Red Sox Mentoring Challenge recognition event at Fenway Park on Jan. 24.
- In Lawrence, mentoring programs collaborated on a Jamboree and collectively received more than 15 referrals.
- At a Young Professionals Society/MMP event in Springfield, a dozen attendees expressed an interest in mentoring.

Welcome MMP's newest member
We are thrilled to announce that Katie Stebbins is our new Director of Western MA Partnerships (DWMP).
In her role as DWMP, Katie's primary focus is to lead initiatives to increase the quality and quantity of youth mentoring relationships in western MA.
Katie has served as a mentor for the last three years in Springfield, and her background includes serving as city planner and economic development specialist in Springfield and regional planner for the Pioneer Valley.

Champions of Mentoring Breakfast: May 7, 8 to 10 a.m.
The Red Sox Mentoring Challenge: This statewide mentor recruitment campaign is now in its fourth year. Interested in participating? The deadline to apply as a partner program is March 1. Programs must sign a new agreement every year, so previous particpation does not allow you to automatically re-enroll. Click for additional information and the contract.

"Managing the downturn" rescheduled
The second conversation on "Managing the Economic Downturn," originally scheduled for Feb. 12, has been rescheduled to either March 19 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. or March 24 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at a location in Greater Boston.
If interested, please let us know which date works best for you, and based on the majority of responses, we will let you know which is the final date.

- The Mass Service Alliance "Call for Presenters" for the 2009 Massachusetts Statewide Service-Learning Conference is now open. Proposals are due Feb. 25.
- Save the date: MMP is a co-sponsor of the 2009 Northeast Regional Mentoring Conference, Oct. 15-16, in Providence, RI. Additional details will be released soon.
