BUTLER'S ORCHARD, Germantown, MD
Butler's Orchard is a great place to pick your own apples, berries or pumpkins or to just shop for the stuff that someone else picked.  In the winter, they also sell Christmas Trees.

Butler's also holds events for kids and is very family friendly.  If you live in the DC area and have not been to Butler's, you're missing out.

DO IT YOURSELF!
Halloween Costumes

Face it. The cost of Halloween costumes is frightening! Have you walked into one of these makeshift store fronts selling their Halloween wares and thought to yourself "Wow! The quality of this thing stinks. I could do this myself?"  We agree. You can and you totally should!

Why DO IT YOURSELF? Reason #1: Your kid is growing faster than the national debt. He will grow out of it by next year. Reason #2: Your kid changes his mind more than the weather forecast.  So, it's not likely he is going to want to be the same thing next year. Reason #3: D.I.Y. costuming is a great way to personalize your costume. That way your kid doesn't haunt the streets with the same thing his arch nemesis, Johnny, from next door, is wearing. The HORROR!

Don't be scared of doing-it-yourself. It's not as scary as you think and all the money you saved can go toward decorations! Candy! Or the dentist bill looming in your future from all the candy your munchkin is about to consume!

To get you started, here are some pointers:

  • Stay calm.
  • Ask your Trick-or-Treater what kind of costume he or she might like. Get as many options as possible, so you can narrow it down to the easier of the bunch. Or, go ahead and make the impossible happen,  SUPERMOM (or dad)!
  • Start brainstorming about how you can make it at home.
  • Make a list of what you need and see what you and your friends have at home before you venture out.
  • And, finally, it's supposed to be fun! So, include your kid in the costume making. They will appreciate it more if they had a part in it.

We at Great Kids News have come up with our own D.I.Y. costumes to get you started, so go ahead and use them! We don't mind. Head to our blog to check them out!
