Go Back In Time with Father Christmas
English Heritage are holding two special events this November. A Victorian Christmas at Belsay Hall Northumberland and a Victorian Christmas Shopping Weekend at Clifford's Tower York.
 At both Victorian Father Christmas events, visitors will be welcomed by Father Christmas who will be wearing a traditional Victorian style costume while seated in his grand chair in the beautifully panelled library at Belsay Hall or in the medieval chapel at Clifford's Tower. Father Christmas will entertain visitors of all ages with tales of Christmas past, famous Christmas stories and poems including an old favourite - "The Night Before Christmas" by Clement C Moore from the early 19th Century. There'll also be a chance for visitors to find out more about what Christmas would have been like during Victorian times, the type of presents they would have received, as well as how many of our present-day Christmas traditions have Victorian origins. For example the Christmas tree, Christmas cards and crackers all became popular during the Victorian era. The Victorian Father Christmas is as friendly and loveable as his modern-day counterpart, so children will adore him - there'll be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, make requests and for parents to take photos.
In particular, Belsay has very strong associations with Christmas, as the Middleton family first moved into the then brand new Hall on Christmas Day in 1817.
The Clifford's Tower event also includes a Festive Shopping Weekend - with 10% off all purchases! Staff will be offering a selection of traditional Christmas mead, mulled wine and ginger wine, as well as delicious jams and chutneys to taste.
