Thoughtful Feb

I've been putting together some great prizes for our 4 community group award winners in the What's On 4 2010 Awards. These groups play such an important role in our children's lives and receive little thanks for their hard work.

I'm particularly delighted to announce that Halos N Horns are sponsoring our Most Outstanding Baby & Toddler Group award and giving the winner £500 to spend on new equipment and toys - it's fantastic that a big company wants to support our community groups too!

And on the subject of thank yous, I've just nominated my little girl's school in the Teaching Awards - should your child's school or teacher be nominated too?

It's also been a thoughtful February for me.

I've been trying to help a young Mum called Jo Jones who is just 32 and has a 2 year old daughter. Jo has secondary breast cancer and it's now spreading. Jo's only hope is special care only available abroad. Jo and her family are fundraising to send Jo to one of these centres and one of the events is an auction.

So far we at What's On 4 have raised £1500 worth of pledged items. Please take a moment to read Jo's story in her own words and please help in anyway you can.

Jo Jones and her family

"My name is Jo and I am 32 years old. I have a beautiful and very lively daughter who is about to turn 3 years old, a wonderful, loving husband and supportive family. My life is perfect except for the fact that I have secondary breast cancer that is in my bones and just last week we have discovered that it has also travelled to my liver. The Doctors have offered my last hope which is a forth gruelling dose of chemotherapy in the hope of extending my life but there is no cure for this condition available on the NHS.

I have discovered a treatment centre founded on the work of Dr Issels which has had miraculous affects in treating cancer patients with conditions even as advanced as mine but the treatment is expensive. I need £30,000 to complete their month long immunotherapy program in Mexico and I need to go as soon as possible. With the amazing goodwill of family, friends and complete strangers we have so far managed to raise a massive £7000 but we have a long way to go and no time to waste.

We have been asking the many companies we work with and via Twitter for donations for the auction and we have already received over £1500 worth of pledges. This month we're highlighting the 4 community awards in the 2010 What's On 4 awards.

Thousands of community groups for children run across the UK every week. These are run by volunteers with support from parents and make a huge differents to families across the UK.

Most Outstanding Community Group Volunteer for children

Open to any volunteer working with a communty group for children anywhere in the UK. The winner will receive a selection of prizes.
