Let
it snow...top tips for keeping the kids entertained at home from Wendy Shand of Tots to Travel
The
balmy days of summer seem a distant memory as I listen to my 2 year
old daughter singing 'walking in a Winter Wonderland' yet again
but all is not lost! If you do get snowed in and can't get out to
your usual activities, there are still plenty of ways to keep your
little ones entertained - and keep your sanity!
Treasure
hunt...why not hide some treats or toys around the place, draw a map
and voilą - a treasure hunt fit for any budding pirate! Make
a 'den'...a spare blanket and a couple of dining chairs can make
a great knight's castle or fairy house (my kids even eat more
lunch in their 'castle' than at normal mealtimes - why?!) Get
crafty! Dig out the coloured paper, crayons, stickers, etc and you
can easily fill an hour making weather pictures or perhaps a pretend
holiday postcard to send to Granny? Who
says picnics have to be outside? Pack up the basket, spread a
blanket on the floor and tuck in! When
all else fails, throw on the waterproofs, wellies and gloves and go
build a snowman! Most children would wear their wellies in any
weather given the choice an d let's face it, we can all remember
how much fun it is to make snow angels can't we...or is that just
me?!
Remember,
for a bit of year round sun, Tots to Travel now have new properties

Why Learning to Swim is SO Important
Despite the weather, swimming still
remains one of the best and most important activities you can do; and
it's never too early to teach your children.
'As the world's largest baby
swimming company, we're increasingly hearing fantastic stories of
our little Water Babies avoiding the tragedy of drowning,' reports
founder, Jess Thompson.
'Possibly the most remarkable event
happened only a couple of months ago. Toby Peyton-Jones started with
us at just two weeks, and he's now six. He was out cycling along an
estuary when his bike slipped and he plunged 8ft into the icy waters
below. Far from panicking, upon resurfacing, the first thing his
terrified father heard him calmly say was 'Get out the way dad,
you're blocking the ladder.
'Following on from stories of at
least five other Water Babies saving themselves in the last two years
alone, it makes us remarkably proud of what we do. Our techniques are
highly specialist, which is why so many of our children are
confidently swimming from as early as 2 ½ years. But, of course
swimming with us is about more than that; it's the fun, social side
and bonding that are all so fantastic too.'
Matthew Smith, another of our Water Babies, showing his extreme confidence
underwater (and cycling capabilities), but please don't try this at
home!

raising £213,000 for them in 2009. For pregnancy advice go to

Have you tried...
Performing Arts...Strictly Come Dancing, Britains Got Talent, HSM, X Factor and now Glee have inspired a whole new generation to sing and dance. If your children have been why not let them try a class? There is a wide variety of dance styles to choose from so have a think about what they would like the best and contact some local classes or go for a more general performing arts class, most will give you a free trial if you ask.
Martial Arts ...This a great activity to give focus, controls and respect as well as be Kung Fu Panda! Children are taught the positions and moves in a controlled safe environment and many classes also give children additional support on their own safety including stranger awareness, bullying and respect for others. Children gain a sense of achievement as they progress through the levels. Again a trial class or two is often free of charge.
Languages...Learning another language will open many doors for your children as they grow older and it will be more of a necessity in business that it ever was for us. Give them a head start with fun classes tailored for children, there is bound to be French and Spanish available in your area but sometimes other languages are available too including German and Japanese!
Visit our activity information pages for these and more ideas!
