Nifty Thrifty Parties for the Credit Crunch
As the credit crunch continues parents may want to look at how to cut the costs of this year's birthday party without cutting corners. Keeping it simple can still mean a great party for the kids but without breaking the bank. A few hours of fun to mark a special day & gathering a few friends together for some lively games, tasty food and a few treats to take home is all you need for a very happy birthday boy or girl.
This kind of party really is as simple as it seems. In my book Birthday Party there are great ideas for fun games, making use of bits and bobs from around your home. Yes you don't even have to go out and buy anything for these games. They suit all ages and can be adapted to almost any theme you can think of. There are also recipes for healthy food that is easy to prepare and kind on your purse as well as ideas for quick and easy home-made invitations and party bags!

Here's a game taken from Birthday Party
 It was the TV ad for Maltesers that inspired the following game!
The aim of the game is to move stuff - like popcorn, Maltesers or even strips of paper - from one bowl to another by sucking at one end of a straw. You can only move the object with the power of your puff.
As a team game, get one child to move one piece of popcorn, then run back to tag the next person who does the same. As individuals it's just a race against time. The team or individual with the most pieces of popcorn wins. You can also award stars for the person who tried hardest and the person with the most interesting technique.
Safety note: You must use something that is at least twice the size of the hole in the straw because you don't want the children to accidentally suck it into their mouths.

Real Life Party

We had the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Birthday at home but with an older brother (age 6) by 4 my young lady had very definite ideas about where she would like her party and how many friends she would like to share it with. In my experience age 4 and 5 seem to equate to the biggest number of guests and with the start of school the numbers were hovering around the sixteen!
 The thought of this many children aged 4-5 in the house looking to be entertained when outside space wasn't an option (December - need I say more!) meant I didn't need much persuading to consider the soft play activity centres for a full package Party which got a beaming smile from the birthday girl!!
The total cost was over my budget so I wanted to see if I could achieve some savings by talking to the play centres and the results were very successful.
I managed to negotiate a discount by having the party at an off-peak time and by not having a party host. The soft play centre were clear in what they would provide: the princess room, the food, the party bags and the use of the soft play centre for 90 mins. I would provide the cake and be the party host. It was an excellent party - my daughter was happy and I had come in on budget.
