Featured Ministry

This month we are selecting The Gathering (Harvey Hook) and At Work On Purpose (Chuck Proudfit).  Not only are they Business Partners but they are ministry partners and good friends as well.

Together the three organizations (including Christian Marketplace Network) have been leaders in changing the face of marketplace ministry in Central and Southwest Ohio as we plow the fields of the marketplace together.

May the seeds we plant continue to bloom and flourish!!

If you have a suggestion for a great ministry, who is a Christian Marketplace Network member, please submit it to the:
Happenings/Events
The Dayton Region has announced the next Big Breakfast.  The breakfast will be on August 13th from 7:30-9:00 AM and will feature former Iams Pet Food owner Clay Mathile.

The Cincinnati Region  once a year co-sponsors  the Willow Creek Leadership Conference.  This year the conference is being held on August 6th & 7th.  In conjunction with our ministry partner At Work on Purpose, member Teakwood Marketing and others they are also doing quarterly base camp leadership sessions.  These are on a Thursday evening at the TriCounty Vineyard so they are very accessible to South Dayton people as well.

So the question is, "Do you want to continue your current leadership style or do you want to set a higher standard that represents Him?"  Attend all of these events to honor Him.

Also we are all leaders in the marketplace, so you do not need a title to attend.

More information on these events can be found by visiting the Christian Marketplace Network web site.

Let us know what is going on in your region!
Partner Events

Cedarville University will be hosting Dan Cathy, President and COO of Chick-fil-A, on Tuesday, August 18th.

The event is free and open to the public. It will start at 12:30 in the Dixon Ministry Center.

His address will be "The Role of Leadership and The Importance of Having a Good Name."

Helpful Business Hints

TIME DRIVER:  I received an invitation to schedule an appointment this week with one of our members.  The invitation was about an issue we needed to discuss.

The invitation was from an automated service that sends out the calendar of the person inviting you to schedule a meeting.  I could see when he was available and choose a time that fit my schedule.

It embeds a "schedule now" button in your e-mails and on your web site.

This thing even sends a reminder.  HOW COOL!!

We are always looking for tips for saving time and/or money or help with producing additional revenue.  Please share them with others

From the Editor... WHO ARE WE Part 2
by Bill Gaffney

Our mission statement says:  To provide a forum where marketplace Christians can connect and support one another on a consistent basis.

I have always said we need to be extremely focused in both business and ministry.  God has provided this organization with a ministry focus of Christian business people in the marketplace, and more specifically professional and spiritual support, encouragement. professional training and business networking.

But God also provides us with the opportunity to use our business talents to help and train others.  In our organization we have a good number of non-profits and ministry organizations.  Most of those organizations rely on contributions of time and finances to do their work.  Many of them are relatively small and their talent and giftings are not in the business side but rather in the "ministry" side.

So as business people we can help them with the business side.  We can volunteer our time to teach these valuable members certain business practices.  We can also teach them about building networks and relationships, things that most of us excel in.  After all we all know it is not about showing up and putting our hands out.  Rather it is about developing relationships that lead to other relationships.

I believe somewhere there is a phrase that goes, "As iron sharpens iron."  This saying does not belong exclusively to Christian men's organizations.

Enjoy this month's newsletter.

AND NOW YOUR SOLUTION: SBDC's ARE A-OK
By Gene Marks from Biz Journals

I had a great college experience recently that I'd like to share.

My client, Alan, participated in a program with a Small Business Development Center. He got some amazing advice and paid nothing. Penny pinchers take note.

AN INTANGIBLE, INVISIBLE FORCE - A MASTERMIND GROUP
From Small Biz Success Network

My good friend Cheryl Haynes recently published this article in her Small Biz Success Network newsletter.  This is a key ingredient to business (and personal) success.  I even suggested she provide reprints to new members.

With her permission I think we will consider doing the same.

BRAND & BRANDING
From Mike Clough

Donna Childs, the Dayton Region Marketing Director sent several of us the first of three articles on "Brand" about a month ago.  It was so powerful I knew we had to print them in the newsletter.

A couple of weeks ago I posted Branding Is The Key to Differentiation which was very well received. However, it was simply a primer on "branding". My plan was to follow-up with a primer about creating a "brand", explain the differences between brand and branding. and show you how to also differentiate yourself with your brand. However, before I could do so, a reader, Tim Negris, product/marketing executive and developer, beat me to the punch. He sent me a comment that was so well written using an excellent example, that I requested his permission to share it with you unedited as the follow-up to my post on branding. I can't imagine how I could improve on it, so, here it is:

WHAT CAN YOU GIVE BACK

We are looking for benefits we can provide to our members.  Just two or three of these can pay back the cost of the membership and be invaluable to our members.  These benefits should be immediately applicable for all of our members, or at least the vast majority.  One thing we are starting to look at is a discount gas card.  Please be thinking along these lines.  If you have a suggestion or idea please contact our membership director, Mary Beth Lewis.

ODDS & ENDS

BIG BREAKFAST

It's here!!!!  On August 13th The Dayton Region will be having the next Big Breakfast and the speaker will be Clay Mathile, former owner of Iams Pet Foods.  Don't miss it.  Clay speaks only a few times a year.  We were very lucky to get him.  There are a few corporate tables left!!!  What a great way to promote your business!!

CINCINNATI LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

Every year Willow Creek Church puts on one of the top leadership summits in the world.  For the last three years the Cincinnati Region has co-sponsored the local simulcast.  This year it will be on Aug 6th and 7th.  The savings our members receive through this just about pays for your cost of membership

In addition the Cincinnati Region has started a series of quarterly leadership sessions.  Not only are they free but they will also improve you so you can increase your business.  More importantly they will increase your value as a marketplace ministry leader.
