From the Editor... WE ARE ALL BARNABUS!!!! by Bill Gaffney
Last week I received a devotional. In the devotional the writer talked about Paul and Barnabus. He mentioned how all the disciples and most of the rest of the group called "The Way" were apprehensive, and in many cases, scared of Paul. Rightfully so. But Barnabus knew the changes that had taken place and knew he was to promote (market) Paul to the others.
We are all Barnabuses in the marketplace.
* We promote our Christian business friends to others. * We carry the good message and promote God's ways to one another. * We promote the value of Christian principles in our business dealings to non-Christian business people.
Recently a friend, who is not a Christian, came to me about a company they worked for who professes to be Christian. But some of the things they have seen in this company do not exhibit Christian standards and principles. Unfortunately I know what this friend said to be factual.
Remember Barnabus didn't necessarily want to do what he was doing. But he knew it was God's direction. Are you following God's direction?

7 REASONS LEADERS FAIL By Jeremy Dean from PsyBlog
|
A recent article published in American Psychologist beautifully explains why so many people experience their managers as piping hot geysers of stress (Vugt, Hogan & Kaiser, 2008).
What emerges is that bosses aren't inherently bad people (mostly), but
that the modern culture of work sets them up to fail. Here are the
seven main reasons I've picked out from this article for why leaders
fail:

5 REASONS NOT TO NETWORK By John Hadley
|
My friend, John Hadley, wrote this article in regards to job search but it is easily transformed into any type of networking.
Networking is a lot of work - after all, it isn't called net-playing! There wasn't a Networking 101 course in high school or college, so we rely on what we've been told about it, read about it, or learned through trial by fire, and many times we get conflicting advice. Why bother at all? After all:
John Hadley teaches job seekers internationally strategies and skills that enable them to tap into the 'hidden' job market and find the best jobs now. He also works with professionals struggling to achieve the visibility that leads to great new opportunities at work or in the market. web site |

HOW THE MIGHTY FALL: A PRIMER ON THE WARNING SIGNS By Jim Collins
|
Jim Collins is the author of "From Good to Great" and "Built to Last". He is considered one of the top management gurus in the world.
In his newest book, "How the Mighty Fall and Why Some Companies Never Give In" he looks at reasons very successful companies fail.
This article is a brief summary of the 5 stages of failure written by Collins and published in Business Week. While his study focused on the corporate titans there are a lot of lessons for small business owners as well as for Christian Marketplace Network.
Find 30 minutes or so to read the article and listen to the podcast.
