Helpful Business Hints |

WHERE THE BIG BOYS PLAY: Most of you, no doubt, have heard of LinkedIn and all of you have probably heard of that college networking phenomenon called Facebook. So are you using them for business?
I have been using LinkedIn from the early days and I can assure you many executives are very active on it. It is a great place to find and develop new business contacts, as well as find "focus" groups (communities) of like-minded individuals. There is one for Christian Business Network (under the letters) that you can go to Bill Gaffney's name and join. LinkedIn also gives you "street cred" in the business community.
In the last year Facebook has also started to be used by high end business people. Many of the true business networking gurus I know have joined. They finally got me to do so. It is the new "street cred" engine. If you join this one confine it to business. Don't mix personal with it.
So get with the program, as well as help your business, already.
We are always looking for tips for saving time and/or money or help with producing addtional revenue. Please share them with others. |

From the Editor... by Bill Gaffney
This newsletter is a special edition. The main piece is regarding our name change. Members have already received an e-mail about this. All the details are below.
For many of us it will be a bit hard and sad to see the name we have come to know changed. But it is time to grow and with it create a new name.
Just remember that this is traditional. In the Bible we see Abram and Sarai changed to Abraham and Sarah, Jacob changed to Israel and Saul changed to Paul, among others.
We have also included a piece this month from a Rabbi that asks the question why we need to work and gives a very fresh perspective.
A final note. Monday, May 26th is Memorial Day. Memorial Day is actually the combination of several memorial days for soldiers who served and died on both sides of the Civil War. Today it is thought of as a family day, picnics, sporting events the first day of summer, etc. It is also thought of as the 3rd day off in a 3-day weekend. Most importantly, however it is a day to honor those who died for us. Today we have one living veteran from WWI. Two additional ones who served have died in the past year.
I had two grandfathers that served in WWI and a father who served in WWII. They, along with millions of others, have served our country, not seeking fame, fortune or kudos, but as committed citizens. Let's not forget all of them as we enjoy ourselves this Memorial Day.
Enjoy this month's newsletter.

 | CHRISTIAN BUSINESS NETWORK NAME CHANGE
|
|
BACKGROUND
Recently, the leadership of CBN-USA was approached by the legal counsel of Christian Broadcasting Network, concerning Trademark infringement through our use of the acronym CBN-USA and CBN.
After discussing this internally and seeking advice from our own legal counsel, the Executive Committee has decided that it is in our best interest to change the name of the Christian Business Network-USA.
This is something that needs to happen fairly quickly. However, we do want input from all of our members before we make a decision on a new name and begin the legal trademark process along with the marketplace re-branding process.
While we regret losing the brand strength of Christian Business Network and CBN-USA, we are looking forward to this opportunity to take a very strategic look at a new name that accurately reflects our Mission and Vision.
CBN Regional leaders will receive a temporary logo that we will use until a new name is selected and trademarked. Currently, we expect to keep the "cross and swirl" artwork as this works well as the graphic portion of our logo. However, it may be modified to pair up effectively with whatever text is used for the new name.
In the meantime, PLEASE DO NOT USE CBN or CBN-USA for any and all communications (verbal, written, electronic) and use the logo/name combination above (also on the website) for documents. Check with a local, regional or national leadership if you have questions about this situation.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Submitting a Name
We have established a page on our web site so that you may view the names that have been submitted. If you visit LINK you will find a rather extensive and impressive list. We would like for you to add ideas to this list. If you have an idea for a name (or more than one) for this ministry, send your name suggestion(s) to e-mail.
When you are suggesting names, please keep in mind that conflicts might occur simply due to the phonetic sound of the name or acronym. So, it is possible that some very desirable names might be eliminated simply due to the way they are pronounced or the way the related acronym may be pronounced. Please consider this in making your suggestions and understand if your suggestion or a favorite suggestion that you see on the voting website falls "victim" to this legal filter.
NOTE: We will be taking suggestions for names between now and the end of the day on Friday, May 16.
VOTING ON THE BEST NAME
After the names are collected, we are encouraging members to vote on their ideal selection by choosing one name that you feel best describes this ministry. Once the entire list of names is collected, we will let you know so you can read them and vote appropriately. Watch for an e-mail alerting you that the voting has begun; this will be for a very limited time. Once you receive that notice, you may make your vote by revisiting the website above and e-mailing your choices to e-mail.
NEXT STEPS BY THE LEADERSHIP
During the week of May 19, leadership will select a group of names based on the voting results. The leadership team will prioritize the choices; due diligence by the legal firm and the trademark process may take several weeks. However, we hope to have an approved selection on or before July 1. This will involve revisions on the website, in literature, at our meetings and in various electronic communications.
TEMPORARY DOCUMENTS AND BRANDING
In the interim, Chapter Leaders should use art work that does not use the CBN acronym. This will serve to bring us closer to compliance with the wishes of the Christian Broadcasting Network, until we can get totally new logos established. While our name will change, we expect the artwork and color scheme to remain the same.
FINAL REMINDERS...
Please DO NOT use CBN-USA or CBN in any written, verbal or electronic communications. We will refer to ourselves only as the Christian Business Network, until we implement the name change.
Please visit LINK now to make certain we get your suggestions for new names. Watch for an e-mail on voting dates and then let your voice be heard by sending your choice(s) to e-mail.
Thank you for your support of this vibrant ministry, and thank you for your cooperation as we move through this time of transition.

WHY WORK FOR A LIVING By Rabbi Aron Moss
|
Question:
If you really trust in G-d, why do you work for a living? Surely G-d will provide!
Answer:
If I sit back and wait for money to fall from heaven, that is not faith -- that's lack of faith.
Such an attitude means that I'm essentially saying: If money falls from the sky, it's from G-d; but if money is made from smart investments or hard work, G-d didn't do it, it was me. I have limited G-d by relegating His powers to the supernatural. I'm saying that when I do something the natural way, I did it on my own; G-d had nothing to do with it.
Judaism says otherwise. A true believer is one who works hard, but realizes that the success or failure of his business is not in his hands, but in G-d's hands. Our efforts are the vessel, but it is G-d that fills the vessel with His blessing.
This philosophy is at once liberating and demanding. It frees us from worrying about the outcome -- that is in G-d's hands. But it places the onus on us -- we have to do the work so G-d can give us the blessing.
This is true not only in making a living, but in all areas of human endeavor. Whether we are seeking our soul-mate, need a cure for an illness, or being attacked by an enemy, we don't wait for G-d to do a miracle. We get up and do what has to be done, all the while knowing that the success of our actions comes from above.
Ultimately, when we make the effort but give the credit to G-d, even we can bring about miracles.
Rabbi Aron Moss teaches practical Judaism in Sydney, Australia. |

A CALL FOR LEADERS
|
As many of you know our friend Harvey Hook at the Gathering is bringing two nationally recognized leaders, John Maxwell and Jim Tressel (Go Bucks!!) along with himself to a leadership conference in June (see partner events).
This gives me a brief opportunity to talk about leadership with Christian Business Network. The operative word here is servant. Our leaders are here to serve you. The problem is many of us are tired and burnt out (not really). We realize the key to growth and strength of any organization is new blood and fresh ideas.
As we mature as an organization we need new people to take us to the next level. Remember Aaron and Moses led them to the Promised land but Joshua and Caleb took them in. The analogy of seed planters, waterers and harvesters is found in any organization. The seed planters have been hard at work in Christian Business Network for a good number of years. It is now time for the waterers, the Joshuas and Calebs, to come in. And no, the planters are not going to disappear. We will be there as support in the background and to serve in the traditional role of "elders".
So how about you? Can you afford 3-4 hours out of your month to serve? I guarantee you you not only will see a great personal reward but a huge business reward as well.
So contact your local regional leadership and volunteer!!
Bill
