Helpful Business Hints |
|
|
My good friend Mark Schneider has been busy with his own newsletter. Here are a couple excellent hints from it. THANKS MARK!!
SCREEN CAPTURE Have you encountered an error or received a message that you need to record to send to someone? You can capture the computer screen by pressing the Prnt Scrn key on the keyboard, then pasting the image into an E-mail or another application like Word. If you press the Alt key and then the Prnt Scrn key, the system will capture the current window (instead of the whole screen).
CELL TELEPHONE ICE Some are using a convention in their cell phone to put in an entry with the name/description of ICE, which stands for In Case of Emergency, and entering the number of the person to be called in case of emergency. If you are in an accident or lose the phone, it's a way for the person who finds the phone to more easily locate someone who knows you and can help.

From the Editor... by Bill Gaffney
I hope you all had great holidays. We are looking forward to a great 2008 at CBN-USA.
First
of all make 3 New Years Resolutions, or rather set goals that you are going to invite one new person a month to a
meeting, get involved in leadership and call 2 people you haven't seen
at meetings in a while.
Then
review our new mission and vision statements and our purpose below.
These are some of the items that came out of our retreat last month.
We are excited about them. We hope you will be too.
Finally get re-energized about CBN-USA and renew if you are due. I you are not appearing on the web site that means it is time to renew.
If you are appearing but are not sure when you are due to renew go to
the details in your profile on the web site and it will tell you.
You will notice some color changes in this month's newsletter. Hopefully it will be easier on the eyes.
We
had two pieces written by members and an article submission from a 3rd
party source from another member. Way to go!! We look forward to
more. Enjoy this month's newsletter.

CBN-USA EXECUTIVE RETREAT |
Christian Business Network update
The volunteer executive committee leadership team participated in a strategic direction meeting in December to discuss God's direction for our organization in 2008 and beyond. As part of this discussion, the recommendation was made to simplify the statements that define our organization in a way that captures the true essence of what the Christian Business Network is all about. After much prayer and deliberation we landed on the following statements:
Mission statement: To provide a forum where marketplace Christians can connect and support one another on a consistent basis.
Vision statement: To become the premier resource where marketplace Christians connect to build business relationships
Purpose statement: o Facilitate our members business growth o Foster God honoring relationships o Provide an uplifting environment
Tag line: Where marketplace Christians connect
Our hope is that this represents what CBN is all about in your eyes, and is easy for you to recall and share with your business associates. We are honored that you have decided to be a part of CBN-USA, and pray that God has tremendous blessings for you in the upcoming year!
Sincerely,
Brian Benson

TOP 10 REASONS BUSINESSES FAIL
|
|
I am often asked, "What is the difference between a successful business
and one that does not make it?" Listed below are my top ten reasons.

TURN YOUR RESOLUTIONS INTO GOALS FOR SUCCESS IN 2008
|
What is the difference between a goal and a resolution? On the surface - there is not much difference at all, unless you look at the intention of each word. Setting goals is making a long term commitment to reach a specific outcome. A resolution, on the other hand, is merely an unstructured commitment to change one behavior for an unspecified time and an unspecified reason. It is the lack of focus that causes 90% of New Year's resolutions to be broken by February 1st.

TOPPLING A TABOO, BUSINESSES GO FAITH FRIENDLY
|
|
In the world of corporate diversity and inclusion, first there was race, then gender and ethnicity, then sexual orientation. Now religion is knocking at the door, and, according to some experts and practitioners, it isn't likely to go away anytime soon. "The train has not only left the station; it's passing through town," says David Miller, executive director of Yale University's Center for Faith and Culture and author of the 2007 book, God at Work: The History and Promise of the Faith at Work Movement. "The question is: Are you going to steer the train or let it run you over?"

USING MEGACHURCHES AS A MODEL OF DIVERSITY
|
|
Solving the thorny diversity problem? What CEO wouldn't give his vested options to do that in his organization? It turns out CEOs may have a lot to learn from their counterparts running evangelical megachurches--those congregations of several thousand believers, in cities from coast to coast, that are among the fastest-growing institutions in America.

THE CEO, ARE YOU IN OR OUT OF YOUR BUSINESS?
By Paul Orfalea
|
|
"Copy This" is a recent business book written by Paul Orfalea, the kinky haired Founder and CEO of Kinko's. He named his business "Kinko's" after his college curly headed nickname. His extreme Dyslexia places him in the very good CEO company of John Chambers - Cisco, Charles Schwab, Richard Branson, Craig McCaw and others. One of Orfalea's challenges was to not get caught up in the operation of the business and he quotes Benjamin Franklin who cautions CEO's to "Drive thy business and not let thy business drive thee". Paul Orfalea has a simple 7 question quiz you can take to see if you know the difference between working on your business or working in your business.

WEB 2.O From Bill Gaffney
|
Have you heard and/or read headlines about Web 2.0? Like me, are you technically challenged and wonder or trying to figure out what it is? Guess what folks? Some or all of us use parts of it every day. Here is a quick little link from the McKinsey Quarterly.
While you are at it there are a couple of additional great articles there; one on business technology trends and one on how businesses are actually using web 2.0. You may have to sign up for a free account to read them.
Besides being editor for this august publication and CBN-USA Dayton Region co-director Bill is also a career coach and an executive recruiter. He can be reached at 937-567-5267.
