Faith at Work

As it has become more politically and socially acceptable to be vocal about one's faith, companies large and small are putting religion in their business practices. Ohio University's Jan Slater says the faith-based movement is getting bigger all the time, with companies like Coca-Cola to Procter & Gamble holding marketing summits on how to target the faithful. But for smaller companies, faith is central to how they do business. It's a core value. Most people genuinely feel a Christian business owner will treat them honestly. Interestingly, both the religious and secular community hold Christian business owners to a higher standard.

Helpful Business Hints

Measured Replies:  Many times we receive emails, calls, etc. that are harsh or critical in nature.  Being human, our tendency may well be to fire something back.  But instead of doing that and regretting it later here are some suggestions:

  • Wait 24 hours before responding.
  • Before sending any "negative" response run it by a trusted advisor.
  • Instead of sending your initial reply to the intended person send it to the advisor as a means to vent.
  • List possible outcomes of your response and weight them
  • Invoke WWJD

I know.  Sometimes we may think that it would be much more satisfying to send that response, but we are called to set a higher standard.

We are always looking for tips for saving time and/or money or help with producing addtional revenue.  Please share them with others.

FORWARD THIS NEWSLETTER
From the Editor...

In some circles I run in, November is known as gratitude month.  Yes, every month and every day should be gratitude month and day, but the month Thanksgiving falls in provides us with a special opportunity to thank God and others for all of our blessings.

We bless God, ask God to bless our food, etc.  But have you ever thought,  "he really doesn't need our blessings"?  After all, He is God.  What he wants is our attention, our love, our devotion, and a relationship with us.

One of the best ways I know to be in relationship with Him is to take time and recognize Him for all He has done in my life each day.  Every night before I go to bed I make a gratitude list of all the things I am grateful to God for.  Can that be trite, repetitive, etc?  Sure, but I bet you will find new things each day.  It will surely change your mood if you are down, upset, etc.

In fact, when you are compiling that gratitude list, compile a list as well of nice things others have done for you today.  Some days that proves to be quite challenging.  But, if you can't find any, you are probably missing the best part of your day.

Enjoy this month's newsletter!

"The Power of An Ordinary Life"
A Book Review By Brian Benson
Founder and Executive Director of CBN-USA

Ever wonder if God can do extraordinary things that will leave a legacy in this world through you?  If so, then this inspirational and challenging book by Harvey Hook is a must read.  You will learn about ordinary people who have accomplished extraordinary things by living out the will of God in their lives.

God has designed you for a very specific purpose that when acted upon will result in Kingdom-size outcomes.  Harvey reminds us that God doesn't have any "small" players in His kingdom.  Anyone can have a big impact even if the deeds are seemingly small.

"Success is not measured by what you do compared to what others do; it is measured by what you do with the ability God gave you"  Zig Ziglar

As we're going down life's path, sometimes seemingly without direction, it's important to know that God is always preparing us for some future role.  Everything in life has meaning.  It's not always clear what God is doing with our lives since He reveals things to us on a "need to know" basis.  Thank God for that, as I don't think we could handle the full picture all at once.

To maximize the impact of "The Power of an Ordinary Life" on your life, keep a notepad and pen close by and respond to the questions at the end of each chapter.  This can be one of those life-changing books that changes the direction of your life if you will let it.

Harvey reminds us that the wealthiest place on earth is the cemetery as it is the site of countless buried dreams.  Don't let yours be one of them!

The Handbook of Business
by Gerald R Chester

Marion Wade started a pest control business in 1930, when the economy in the United States was struggling. Around the same time, he became a Christian. His conversion to Christianity was genuine, as evidenced by his commitment to learn the Bible and to live by its principles.

Marion's business struggled for fourteen years. He lived hand-to-mouth during this time, but he faithfully sought to learn and practice his Christian faith. His concept of living his faith in business, however, was limited to evangelizing and operating in an ethical manner. He did not perceive much application of biblical principles beyond this. By his own admission, Marion was a dualist; that is, he believed the Bible had little relevance to business beyond ethics and evangelism.

When, Why and How to Break Up With a Customer

Not every client can be your favorite.  That's what Debra Brede, an investment adviser and owner of five-person D.K. Brede Investment Management in Needham, Mass., used to think about one of her most demanding customers. For 20 years, the woman showed up at appointments with bags stuffed with every slip of paper connected with her investments-proxy statements, annual reports, dividend notices-expecting Brede to go over each one with her. Brede did. She wanted to offer good service, and this woman had a $1 million account.

It turned out that even with a million-dollar balance, this client wasn't a winner. She spent a lot of time with Brede and her staff, but because her holdings didn't change much, she paid virtually no fees. Brede discovered she was losing money on the arrangement. Says Brede: "I was shocked."

Use Talent or Lose It

In today's increasingly complex business world, companies are seeking ways to make sure they have the talent they will need to compete now and in the future. Securing and retaining the right skills and competencies is fundamental to the growth and vitality of any organization.

Principle Trumps Everything

Call it ethics, morality, or values, but we are driven and defined by the daily decisions we make and the actions we take. For the last six months I've shared lessons I've learned about success and the absolute, positively, irrefutable number one rule MUST BE standing for something that is unwavering.
