Are You Tired Of The Same Old, Same Old?
A challenge has gone out to this newspaper's editorial staff (didn't know we had one, and that is the exact number, did you?) to include more CBN-USA specific news and articles. So I challenge you people, especially that one person (and you know who you are), to send this overworked editor some CBN-USA related news, articles, helpful hints, etc. |

"The hills are alive....". No, not with the sound of music (well, maybe they are), but with the sounds and activities of CBN-USA. That tireless duo of Kevin Donelli and Mike Howard have Pittsburgh rockin'. In the last few months they have grown to four chapters with at least two more on the way after the first of the year. Way to go guys, and to all of Pittsburgh's leadership as well! Now if I can only get you to do some more web stuff!
A special mention to Bill Nance of WFCJ. Bill is one of the original members of the Dayton Region, a long time steering committee member, co-director of the South Dayton Chapter, and half of the dynamic morning duo of Bill and Melody. By the way, if you are in the Cincinnati/Dayton area and haven't heard them, you have to listen. They are corny but they grow on you. Anyway, Bill was inducted in September into the Dayton Broadcasters Hall of Fame. First of all, we found out he is "the hardest working man in radio" and none of us would disagree. But this is truly a great honor as they induct only 6 or 7 every other year. Bill is the first person from Christian media inducted. Let's hope there are more. Way to go Bill and keep working hard!
We would like to add a new feature and require your assistance. We would like to highlight a CBN-USA "Chapter of the Month". Please submit your chapter to the editor and tell us what makes it special! | |

Happenings/Events |
Two of our chapters have changed locations. The Columbus Eastland Chapter changed location in September and the Dayton Miami County Chapter changed in August.
Somewhere in my vast collection of e-mails Kevin Donelli sent me an announcement regarding the two new chapters in Pittsburgh. But I can't find it!
Many of you know of Stanley Tamm, the Lima nanogenerian who has the building along I-75 with the cross on it. He is speaking at the Dayton South November Lunch & learn. You will not want to miss him!
Finally, keep your eyes open. Dayton is bringing former NBA superstar and memory expert Jerry Lucas to Dayton in January to do one of his memory seminars. We will have information shortly on the front page of the web site.
All these events and announcements can be found on the front page of the web site.

-
Keep them short so people read them.

From the Editor... by Bill Gaffney
I recently have been thinking about how we are put in "MINISTRY" opportunities every day. But many times I can look at the situation as a negative and something I just have to get through.
But what if I ask God how I can be of service to Him in a particular opportunity? So how does this apply to business and marketplace ministry? There are many examples:
- An unusually difficult customer. I can choose to be charitable and go above and beyond.
- An outstanding employee who has just had a series of foul-ups that has cost my company a lot of money. Why did they all of a sudden start messing up? Are there some personal problems I can help them with?
- A competitor who is slinging hateful, untrue and malicious arrows against me. I can select the higher ground and not get sucked into the negative advertising wars.
- A fellow business person or owner whose business is in serious financial difficulty. Maybe I can take time away from that "one more sale" and help a fellow "traveler".
You can think of many more of these types of opportunities. The real point is many times it is not about the evangelism and Bible studies we do in the market place. It is about the examples we set.
Enjoy this month's newsletter.

Diplomacy, Talking Sense
|
|
For most of his professional life, Dennis Ross has been helping people with widely divergent worldviews understand each other.
As Middle East envoy and chief peace negotiator for both the Clinton and Bush senior administrations, he was a central player in many crucial initiatives and exchanges concerning the region, along the way amassing a huge knowledge and experience of moving forward seemingly intractable scenarios.
This article is a great lesson in effective negotiations.

Five Deadly Management Sins
|
Managing is not for wimps. It requires a fine balance--managing performance, productivity, psychology, politics... Most learn from watching others, getting feedback and making mistakes. Here are some mistakes that I'd put in the deadly category:

Don't Be a Workplace Firefighter
|
|
At the end of the day, every organization and every leader has a choice. Either to live in the world of the firefighter, with all of its thrills and costs, or to consciously choose to exit that addiction and move to a positive, proactive, and collaborative workplace. Exercising this act of choice takes the character, will and discipline of top leadership.

It can happen to anyone in a leadership role. Entrepreneurs can fall into the trap.
Small companies experiencing growth can get into trouble. A middle manager can make the same mistake. They all can ignore the warning signs that they need to hire help, delegate work, or add another layer of leadership.
