He won't be surprised because he will have edited this for grammar, punctuation, wording and branding as you read the newsletter.  I am talking about Mark Snow, our National Director of Marketing.  Mark has brought to CBN-USA a consistent message and partnering to expand that message.  Thank you Mark for all you do, especially putting up with me!

Helpful Business Hints
DOCX:  No, it's not the other long lost brother of Racer X. It's the new Microsoft Word 2007 format. If you are running older versions of Microsoft Office and need to open a .docx file, you'll need a converter installed.  It's available on Microsoft's web site delivered via email.

THANKS TO MY FRIEND MARK SCHNEIDER AT MATRIX BUSINESS SOLUTIONS IN DAYTON.  He puts out one mean newsletter with a lot of practical hints.

WEBSITE TIPS:  Here is a link to an article on web site design and some practical tips.

MOZY:  A while back I suggested a back-up database service called Mozy.  It is free for up to 2GB and $4.95/mo for up to 50GB.  It automatically backs up every night.  I want to recommend it again.  I crashed my hard drive a couple weeks ago (though some in leadership would doubt it based on the volume of e-mails) and I was able to restore everything almost 100%.  It was truly a life saver.

From the Editor...
by Bill Gaffney

Summer is starting to wind down but there are a lot of activities going on with CBN-USA.  To start with, we have two chapters changing locations, one chapter being renamed and a new chapter starting  in a unique, one-of-a-kind marketplace ministry in Dayton.   More information can be found under Happenings/Events and, of course, on the front page of our web site.

You will also notice some activities being highlighted with CBN-USA business partners.  This is something new and we will be refining it more in the months ahead.

Finally, I want to briefly discuss something that we should all be thinking about.  Dayton has a regional chaplain and a chaplain in one of the chapters.  There is also a member who is leader of the Greene County Prayer Coalition.  All of these people offer to come in and pray with business owners and business people.  We have not written the book on this as there are others who have pioneered this ministry.  We just hope that across CBN-USA we will see this take wings and grow.

Ed Silvoso & The Big Breakfast
By Bill Gaffney

On Friday, August 10th Dayton CBN-USA hosted another Big Breakfast.  We were thrilled to have marketplace ministry leaders from across Ohio, as well as leaders from Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton CBN-USA in attendance.

Ed spoke on how business people lead the evangelism in a community.  A couple of the comments were:

"This is absolutely the best presentation I have heard that ties together the pieces of what God is up to on a grand scale and how everyday practice by Christians in the marketplace is not secondary, but is absolutely primary to that purpose.  I'm already recommending Ed and his message to everyone in our organization."

"Ed is a living example of what happens when you let the Lord become the CEO of your business.  If more people applied Ed's principles in their workplaces, a revival would occur in the marketplace that would completely transform the business world"

This is especially exciting as we see events like the Mountaintop Economic Summit and YWAM Worldwide Impact Tour come to this area.  Folks, I believe we are in store for city-wide revival and evangelism, the likes of which we have never seen in Ohio.

Look  for more on the Silvoso visit in the September edition of Citizen USA.

One final note:  after the event a number of marketplace ministry leaders from across Ohio got together.  Look for great things to come out of this.

Who's Driving This Bus
From Sandler News Briefs

You get on the bus, the driver closes the door, and the bus accelerates. At the next stop, some passengers get off, new passengers get on. The bus driver knows the route. He doesn't deviate: taking side trips, backtracking, or wandering aimlessly. He has a schedule to keep regardless of the traffic congestion, road construction, or weather conditions.

Whether you get off in three stops, five stops, or eight stops, the driver's goal is to get to the end of the route safely and on time. He is courteous and professional. The ride is orderly and predictable. And, if your behavior is inappropriate, you'll be asked to get off the bus.

How closely does your sales development process emulate the bus driver's focus, discipline, commitment, and actions? Do you have a direct and documented route from Prospect Street to Sale Avenue? Or, do you often find yourself off-course, taking detours, and waiting for potential passengers who can't decide whether to board, then wondering how (or if) you'll ever get back on the established route?

Leadership is a choice - one you should make carefully

Over the past 30 years or so, I've collected a number of universal principles, little statements of experience-based truth that both reflect and influence the way things work, and suggest how we can make things work better. They're valuable tools for families in business. Among them is the Principle of Role Choice. It goes like this: "You can be a worker, or a manager, or a leader. But you can't be any of them successfully if you try to be all of them at the same time."

One of the lessons we learned from Jimmy Carter's presidency is that the higher you rise in the hierarchy of authority and the broader your responsibility becomes, the less time and attention you can afford to devote to operational details. Ever the engineer and man of the people, Carter buttoned up his cardigan each morning and went downstairs to the Oval Office to micromanage the world. It turned out that he couldn't do it. .

The Secret of Life
Have you asked, "What is the secret of life?"

I asked my fitness trainer, who interacts with a wide variety of people, how he thought people might answer. He gave me an assortment of possible responses, such as, happiness, family, fun, money, fame, influence, long life, and even a bottle of Guinness.

The question What is the secret of life? is too vexing for many people, so they dismiss it as an unsolvable conundrum. But there are at least three people who believe they have the answer. This trio is so confident that in their book they included a section titled "The Secret of Life."

Why Some People Thrive in Chaos

Some people love problems. Yes, they complain about them, but they spend most of their time dealing with the problems. They see a problem and go after it immediately to fix it. In so doing, they can create more than a little chaos.

Chaos is caused by the constant jumping from one problem to another. It is often called crisis management. But the surprising thing is that there are people who choose to work in this kind of environment. In fact, they create the chaos by the way they move from problem to problem.

These people love solving problems. This is what they do well. Give them a problem and they go for it in an effort to get rid of the problem. Deep down, they dislike problems so much that as soon as a problem appears they try to eliminate it.

People who jump from crisis to crisis generally make poor managers. They find it difficult to stay focused on goals. They try to avoid the next crisis, and in so doing, often help to make a much bigger crisis. Now the organization is focused on problems rather than goals. It is looking inward rather than looking outward.

On the other hand, some people remain focused on their goals. They ignore the crises in order to stay true to their objectives - which allows them to stay on course and reach those objectives. Obviously, some crises need to be dealt with, but only if they stop progress rather than delay or reroute it.

So the next time you see a problem, ask yourself this question. Am I going toward my goals? Have I lost my sense of direction regarding where I'm headed and how I'm going to get there? Or am I forgetting the goals in order to eliminate problems?

In reality, both kinds of people are needed in the right place at the right time. Determine what kind of person you are in relationship to goals and problems. Then step into your role with confidence.

Sincerely,

Bill Gaffney
