Eight Special Events in October
|
It's Fall and it's finally beginning to look and feel like it. The trees are turning into all sorts of gorgeous colors, pumpkins are available at every farmstand and we're finally wearing light sweaters. No, it's not time to hunker down for the Winter. It's time to get out of the house and come to Mothers & Company. Do activities in the community. Like what, you ask? We've got EIGHT special events you can do this month, in addition to our regular schedule. Don't forget that now is the time to do that early holiday shopping...and of course, please keep MoCo on your list of gift shops.
CHANGE in Shop Hours on Thursdays & Fridays Starting this week (the week of September 27), we will be opening on Thursdays and Fridays at noon (although any classes that may be scheduled those mornings will proceed as scheduled). Therefore, the new shop hours on Thursdays are 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm and Fridays 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
DAY/TIME CHANGE Re: Not-so-new Moms Group Due to popular demand, we've changed the day and time of the Not-so-new Moms Group (a group for mobile babies and their moms). It will now be (starting THIS week, the week of September 27) on WEDNESDAYS at 11:30 am in the Pink Room. Shawna will be the facilitator, you might know her from the Friday New Moms Group. This group is free for MoCo Members or $5 for non-members.

Moms in North Bay, Canada, participating in the 2009 Global Breastfeeding Challenge |
The Global Breastfeeding Challenge
Saturday, October 2 11:00 am
EXACTLY @ Mothers & Company
Join
us to celebrate breastfeeding in a fun "competition" where every child
"wins" because they are breastfed!
What: Quintessence
Foundation's Global Breastfeeding Challenge 2010.
This fun event is a
challenge for which geographic area (province, state or territory) has
the most breastfeeding babies, as a percentage of the birthrate,
"latched on" at 11:00 am local time. In 2009, there were 4,766 babies at 246
sites in 21 countries!
We'll also have a special guest speaker, Lorenza Holt. Not only is she a good friend, childbirth educator, birth doula, public health program manager, childbirth educator trainer and member of the Mothers & Company Advisory Board, she was most recently designated as one of the Our Bodies, Ourselves Women's Health Heroes of 2010. Read more about her here and come be inspired by her gentle wisdom.
To learn more about Quintessence Foundation and why the Global Breastfeeding Challenge was started, see their website.
Why: to
celebrate breastfeeding and milk-banking, and demonstrate promotion,
protection and support for breastfeeding women and their families. It's a
chance for education and peer support done in a fun social way. We'll
take a picture of the whole group as evidence and probably do a video,
too (no close-ups unless you say yes)! :)
Tell your friends! "Latch on" time is exactly 11am local time, so get here early. Come and
be counted. It's free! We'll have door prizes, too!
Please RSVP here so we have some idea of how many people are coming. Please feel free to invite others by clicking on the Forward to a Friend link at the bottom of this enews.

Run/Walk for Abby's House This event is a
fundraiser to help Abby's House care for women and
children in need in Central Massachusetts.
Bring your kids, wear your
baby, bring a stroller, encourage everyone you know to register and
join you.
Nervous about running or jogging? Not quite in shape
yet? There are many different ways to train for a race. We know some
great personal trainers to whom we can refer you or you can use an
online program. One of our favorite online training programs is Couch to 5K (there's
even an app for that). We do plan on having one or two group practice
sessions with personal trainers--those who register will be notified of
those opportunities, so register now. Create a team of friends and
family (including kids!) to join you in the HipHipHerRace event. You'll love
it and your body will appreciate it, too.
What's the route?
First of all, it's
beautiful. And it's just 3.2 miles. A nice walk for a family, a nice
short run in the morning for a runner:

This event takes place
rain or shine. We'll have
t-shirts for each paid registrant as well as great prizes for top
runners and top
fundraisers. If you can't attend the event,
please consider supporting the race and Abby's house by making a donation and/or come out
to cheer on those
who are running or walking!
Does your company have a matching
gift program? Would your company (or a friend's company) become a
SPONSOR? Let us know or encourage them to contact
us. Also, share the information about the
HipHipHerRace 5K with to everyone you know using the links at the bottom
of the page so that your family and friends can have an opportunity to
walk, run and donate, too! Interested in volunteering? Please let us know. We need
volunteers for water stops, first aid and more. We're working on more
details
to make it a fun event for the whole family.
So get your sneakers
on, warm up and start
walking or jogging or running! | What is Abby's House?
Abby's House provides emergency and long-term housing, as well as
woman-centered advocacy and support services to homeless, battered and
