From the President |
Greetings As the last full month of summer approaches, I would bet many of you are focused on staying cool, preparing for the return to "school-year" schedules, and trying to complete what I call "process work" before the busier months ahead. Perhaps we also should take time out for "planned living" along with our day-to-day emphasis on "planned giving" and be better equipped physically and spiritually for the important work that we all do. Your program committee members are putting the finishing touches on the remaining programs for 2009. We are delighted to have great program committee members working on a very special presentation from John Brown in Greensboro on September 2 and our annual meeting with Neil McBryde presenting an afternoon panel in Charlotte on November 5. You can read more about these events on our website (www.ncpgc.org) and in this and future newsletters. Please note our generous sponsors for these programs and our partnership in November with Charlotte Leave-a-Legacy. When your Council sent David Taylor, President-Elect of NCPGC, to the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning's annual Leadership Assembly in July, we received a free registration to the National Conference on Philanthropic Planning in National Harbor, MD (Metro Washington D.C.), October 14-17, 2009 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. The early bird deadline is August 17, but the free registration is good through September 29. This savings on conference registration is worth between $645 and $845, depending on when you register and whether you are a PPP member or nonmember.
Here's how we plan to award this prize...
- NCPGC members attending the September 2 meeting may put two (2) business cards in a basket for the drawing.
- NCPGC members who bring guests may put an additional business card in the basket for each guest.
- Non-NCPGC members who attend may put one business card in the basket.
Our goal is to encourage you to renew or join NCPGC before September 2, attend the John Brown presentation, and invite others so that you may take advantage of this opportunity to attend the national conference. I am looking forward to seeing many of you in Greensboro!
Annette

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 9:30 a.m - 4:30 p.m. Location: UNCG Campus, Elliot University Center, Cone Ballroom A&B 1400 Spring Garden Street, Greensboro, NC
Zen and the Art of Solicitation: Enhancing Your Skills During These Difficult Times Presenter: John Brown, President and Founder, John Brown Limited, Inc., Peterborough, NH
Cost: NCPGC Members $45.00 - Guests $90.00
This session will focus on donor opportunities for major and planned gifts in the current economic climate and how institutions are responding to the challenge. Are your donors backing away from making large commitments? John will provide the tools and strategies to help you plan an approach that makes sense for your donors and your institution.
Working Lunch: Preparing for a Donor Visit - A Case Study: The Luncheon Session will provide a Case Study to prepare you and a key volunteer-such as a board member-for a donor visit. No more just simply handing your volunteer a profile to read! You will learn a specific style of preparation to get the work done, complete the gift, and thoroughly engage your volunteer in the process.
First Afternoon Session: Know Your Prospect - Interviewing Techniques: In the afternoon, the focus will be on instrumentation and implementation. Learn practical techniques to interview prospective donors to probe for information you can use to help them achieve their philanthropic goals. (It is more than admiring the office and asking about the people in the photo.)
Second Afternoon Session: Donor Expectations: What are the expectations of donors/prospects today? What are you and your institution doing regarding stewardship? These are interesting times we are facing but there are opportunities that we haven't had before. John will give us ideas about what we can do to adapt in this new donor and non-profit environment.
John Brown founded John Brown Limited in 1978 on the philosophy that development professionals are most effective when their strategies include respect for donors' interests; relationship building; rehearsed, but comfortable solicitation; and planned giving integrated into all major gift endeavors. The hallmark of John's counsel is to motivate organizational leaders in building ownership among their constituents, and consistently achieving a greater level of success in fundraising.
Under John's leadership, JBL has served thousands of clients. By fostering donor ownership and respect, his clients run capital and endowment campaigns, effective major/planned gift programs and, most importantly, long-term financial and membership growth.
Prior to opening his own firm, John served in several major gifts and planned giving positions at Syracuse University. He later created and directed the planned giving program at Harvard University, and was a founding member of the Planned Giving Group of New England. John volunteers his time lecturing at professional nonprofit conferences each year, including CASE and AFP.
Schedule of the Day: 9:15 - 9:45 AM Coffee, Registration, Networking 9:45 - 10:00 AM Introductions and Business 10:00 - 12:00 Session I 12:00 - 12:30 PM Buffet Lunch 12:30 - 1:30 PM Session II, Working Lunch 1:45 - 3:00 PM Session III 3:15 - 4:30 PM Session IV

What's On Your Mind? |
This month, Lyne Gamble, long-time member, current board member, and a past president of NCPGC, shares his thoughts about the value of NCPGC membership. Lyne is Director of Major & Planned Gifts at the UNC School of Public Health.
BEYOND MEMBERSHIP "Over time it appears many aspects of planned giving have become more clear and better understood by both practitioners and more especially the donors who benefit from it. This is important and good. Planned giving used to be too much a stand-alone component of the development enterprise. It was not shared particularly well and was often made far too complex. A simple gift could become so weighed down with bells and whistles that it hardly stood a chance of actually moving. It now seems there is clearer communication across the board. Some aspects of planned giving are indeed complex, but our job is to strive to make it better understood. Some degree of complexity need not be a deterrent to the benefit planned giving provides both a donor and the charitable effort they support.
The North Carolina Planned Giving Council is of great aid to those who care to understand and appreciate a greater mastery of planned giving. I genuinely enjoy getting to know those involved with the various aspects of planned giving both in our state and throughout the land. I appreciate being able to contact fellow members of the NCPGC who provide advice and insight whenever I need to know more. One of the beauties of planned giving is that there is always more to know. On a number of levels, NCPGC helps me be better at my job." |

Quote of the Month |
|
This month's quote is submitted by Lyne Gamble:
"The masters of the art of living make little distinction between their work and their play, their labor and their leisure, their minds and their bodies, their information, their recreation, their love and their religion. They hardly know which is which, they simply pursue their vision of excellence at whatever they do, leaving others to decide whether they are working or playing." Author unknown.

Membership |
The purpose of the North Carolina Planned Giving Council is to encourage the education and training of the planned giving community of North Carolina, which includes development officers for charities and applied professionals--trust officers, attorneys, accountants, financial planners, life insurance agents, and others. NCPGC offers members the opportunity to share the knowledge they possess and to access the information they need. A measure of knowledge is obtained via the programs presented; however, most members agree that one of the primary benefits of membership in the NCPGC is the contacts, friendships, and networking opportunities that result from interaction with other professional gift planners. Membership programs: Programs of interest are offered to members -- at substantially discounted rates -- throughout the year. Speakers of local and national prominence present topics of current interest. Programs are designed to meet the needs of the various levels of expertise represented by the membership. Educational credits are offered whenever possible. National Membership: The Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (PPP) addresses the concerns of the charitable community nationwide. NCPG promotes research, education, outreach, government relations, ethics, and diversity. To learn more PPP, Click HERE.
