Your Contributions At Work... Daisy's reading score improves!

Our Community Impact Partner, Redlands-based Building A Generation's Student Basic Needs Access program, is key in providing families direct support needed so that students can thrive in school. Daisy is one of the young girls they have recently assisted who at the start of the school year had extremely low reading scores.
After the first parent-teacher conference, Daisy's mother, Mary, sought out assistance to help her understand the information shared by her child's teacher during the conference. When the case manager told Mary about Daisy's reading scores, her mother conveyed that she was much more concerned with her ability to provide food or how she could work the extra hours needed to buy her children shoes. The case manager was able to quickly provide support to purchase food, shoes, and seasonally appropriate clothes. By helping to address her basic needs, Mary was able to focus on strategies to improve her child's reading scores - instead of simply having to worry about providing for her basic needs. Over the next few months, Mary and her case manager utilized additional resources to reduce long-term food insecurities and access after-school tutoring.
During the final parent-teacher conference of the year, Daisy's teacher reported that her reading score had improved significantly, eliminating the need for grade retention. In addition, her teacher indicated that Daisy had blossomed both academically and socially.
Daisy is just one of the many local children and families being helped thanks to United Way's financial support through the Community Impact Grants process. Thank you for your support and helping to make this success possible for children like Daisy!

UPS Volunteers Give local Community Centers a Makeover

| |
On July 29th, as a way to create excitement about their upcoming United Way campaign and give back to the community through volunteering, UPS Southern California Managers came together and gave the Corona Community Center and Rescue Mission in Corona a much needed makeover. In partnership with Corona-Norco United Way, we were able to successfully place and organize all 114 volunteers.
The Corona Community Center houses an after school program that allows students to come get help with their homework and provides them with computer and internet access for free. In addition, the center also houses a GED program for parents and adults in the community. Volunteers helped spruce up the space by painting a mural, cleaning the community kitchen, replacing sprinkler heads, and even planting sod at one of the locations. To view all of the pictures from the event, please click here to see them on our Facebook page.
Thank you to Corona-Norco United Way and to all of the UPS employees who came out and spent part of their day to improving the community!
