CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!

BECOME A PROJECT LEADER -

IT'S FUN AND EASY!

HOIE Logo NEWEach HandsOn Inland Empire Project is managed by a trained HandsOn Project Leader who ensures our volunteer projects are fun, meaningful, and successful.  We are seeking to greatly expand the number of projects we offer each month and need your help to do it!

Project leaders connect with an agency and work with volunteers directly.  Also, project leaders can choose the type of project that is of most interest to them.  Project leaders are often working professionals and devote their free time to helping out their community.  This is a chance for you to develop leadership, management skills, and communication skills, as well as give you the opportunity to serve the community.

It's easy! If you're enthusiastic, enjoy people, like to organize, and want to make a difference here in the Inland Empire
, sign up today!  Interested in leading a project? To find out what projects we need leaders for click here.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE A SUCCESS!

MLK Day 2011

Thank you the 300 volunteers who came out and served in one of six community projects that were held in honor of Dr. King and his desire to improve the living conditions for all people. Volunteers helped clean up their neighborhoods, paint murals honoring national and local leaders, package food boxes for needy families, and brighten the day for seniors.

REPORT REVEALS SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN POVERTY IN THE INLAND EMPIRE

A new report, released in October 2010 by the Brooking Institute in Washington D.C., has identified the San Bernardino County-Ontario area as one of the nation's fasting growing areas for suburban poverty.  In just two years, 2007-2009, the Inland Empire has seen a staggering 31% increase in poverty.  This increase places the region as the third highest rate in the nation, surpassing even Los Angeles County.

Earlier in the decade the Inland Empire experienced rapid growth of suburban development, but now many residents are facing a dramatic downturn due to the recession.  Many families who were living in suburban communities are now facing serious financial difficulties and are no longer able to sufficiently support their basic needs.

Inland Empire United Way is deeply involved in assisting poverty-stricken children in the community, by partnering with local schools and teachers, distributing food for the hungry, by providing school supplies for homeless students, connecting struggling families with needed resources and providing funding to an entire network of nonprofits dedicated to assisting individuals and families in need.

If you or a loved one is in need of assistance, please call United Way's free, 24-hour health and social service information and referral line by simply dialing 2-1-1 on any telephone.
