E-NEWS FROM YOUR LOCAL UNITED WAY

September 2010

Greetings!
Between the start of a new school year, the launch of our major campaign season, and an all-time high for people needing help in our community, things are in full swing at Inland Empire United Way.  We are pleased to share this monthly update and look forward to hearing from you soon.  Thank you for your support!

2-1-1 Receives Record Number of Calls from Local Families In Need

During the month of August 2010, a record 6,679 calls were received by the 2-1-1 San Bernardino County call center.  2-1-1 is a free health and social service referral line operated by Inland Empire United Way, and is available 24 hours a day from any phone in the county.

Although we are all acutely aware of the tremendous needs of individuals, children and families in the Inland Empire, the recent increase in calls to 2-1-1 highlights the fact that these are desparate times for many of our neighbors.  The majority of callers this past month were seeking (1) help with utilities, (2) rental assistance, and (3) food or meals.

We are proud to offer 2-1-1 as a free service to help connect those in need with the many caring organizations and available resources in our community.  As the number of callers in crisis continues to expand, additional funding will be required to increase staffing and expand our capacity to meet the needs of more individuals and families.

As we are about to celebrate the 4th Anniversary of this powerful service, we want to say THANK YOU for helping to make 2-1-1 a reality in our community!

Kicking Off United Way Campaign Season!

On August 25, 2010 we held our Official Kick-off Event to launch the 2010-2011 campaign and celebrate some of our most successful campaigns of 2009-2010. A huge thank you to Dave and Buster's in Ontario for donating their beautiful venue, Josh LaBarge for donating all food for the event, and AFLAC for being the event sponsor and donating raffle prizes. We congratulate all of our winners below and thank those of you who were able to attend.

Target

Thank You, Target!

With a recent grant of $25,000
awarded to Inland Empire United
Way's Kids Pack program, we extend our sincerest appreciation to Target and recognize their commitment to our community's children. Target's ongoing support - through volunteerism, product donations and financial contributions - increases our effectiveness and ability to make a positive change in the lives of the children we serve.

U.S. Bank's
"Home Run for Kids"

Every time a Rancho Cucamonga Quakes player hit a home run during the 2010 season, U.S. Bank donated $50 to Inland Empire United Way's Kids Pack program, as part of the U.S. Bank Home Runs For Kids program. In all, the Quakes hit 113 home runs, totaling $5,650 to help feed hungry kids.  Thank you, U.S. Bank for your generous support!
