Helping Kids In Need Succeed! |
Gearing up for the 2010-11 school year...
It's time to head back to school for many children in the Inland Empire. Time for new backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks and pens. But for thousands of local children whose families are struggling financially, new school supplies come second to putting food on table.
Fortunately, that is where Inland Empire United Way's School Tools program comes into play. Through our Teacher Resource Center, we are preparing to arm thousands of low-income students in our community with brand new school supplies to help support their academic success.
As one teacher stated, "Some students are coming to class without a lot of sleep. They worry about their parents' situation. Clothes are being worn until raggedy and thin. I try to make my classroom as happy and safe as possible, all the while trying teach them lifelong educational and coping skills, and supplies from your program give me some extras to help me do just that. Thank you!"
IEUW's Teacher Resource Center. Last year, 23,170 disadvantaged students benefited from the School Tools Program!

Too Scared To Call
Ana, one of United Way's 2-1-1 night-time Call Specialists, received a call from Lisa (name changed for privacy), an elderly woman who told her story of being abused physically including having her arm burned by her care giver. She was too scared to call Adult Protective Services (APS) but had been given a 2-1-1 card from a helpful neighbor who encouraged her to dial 2-1-1 and report her trouble that way. Ana was able to calm Lisa down and help her feel comfortable with the idea of reporting the abuse. But Lisa was still too afraid to make the call herself, so she asked Ana to do it for her. Ana called APS, made the report, and learned that an investigation would commence immediately. When Ana phoned back to tell her of this progress, Lisa said she very much appreciated the help. This true story highlights one of the less visible advantages of having 2-1-1 at our fingertips, an advantage that will never show up on a report. Many times people, particularly older individuals who have been hurt, either by abuse or by accident or even when faced with a serious medical problem, dial 2-1-1. Our assessments of these callers have revealed that for many vulnerable people, dialing 2-1-1 is a much less frightening proposition than calling 9-1-1 or a government office. 2-1-1 is perceived as a safe number to call - providing crucial help to individuals who otherwise may not have received the assistance they need. Because of 2-1-1, more abuse is reported and investigated. Our communities are safer. Our families and friends are healthier and happier.
2-1-1 San Bernardino County, the free health and social service referral line operated by IEUW, is available 24 hours a day from any phone in the county. |
