Thank you, U.S. Bank...and go Quakes!
U.S. Bank's Home Run for Kids |
Every time a Rancho Cucamonga Quakes player hits a home run during the 2010 season, U.S. Bank will be donating $50 to Inland Empire United Way's Kids Pack program, as part of the U.S. Bank Home Runs For Kids program! "When we started formulating our partnership with the Quakes, we outlined some traditional sponsorship benefits such as signage and promotions, but in addition, we really wanted to utilize the sponsorship to assist the Inland Empire community," said Bill Cave, president of U.S. Bank in the Inland Empire. "The Inland Empire United Way's Kids Pack program is the ideal program to truly have an impact on our youth and the future of our community." "A well-nourished, satisfied child is far more ready to learn, not miss school and live a happy, healthy life," said Lorraine Ousley, Director of the Inland Empire United Way's Education & Health Initiative. "U.S. Bank has been a generous partner over the years, but this is really amazing. This program is so critical and to think how many kids it will feed over the course of the season is just incredible. We are extremely grateful to U.S. Bank." |

You can help! |

Each weekend, Inland Empire United Way provides backpacks of nutritious food to 1,200 homeless and very low-income children. Here's what a student and two local teachers had to say...
"Irene is a little on the shy side. She knows she does not read very well. In her words, she does not know how to read at all. However, this program has helped to assure her that this is where she can get help and she is displaying a more positive attitude. She is now believing that she can achieve new heights of learning. She is more excited about school." Teacher, Ontario-Montclair School District "It's an excellent program! I know there are students who go to sleep hungry."
Teacher, Redlands Unified School District
"We don't have a lot of money. We live in a van, but we're gonna get money to live in a motel. Sometimes my mom and aunt sell stuff at the swap meet. We keep our food in an ice chest."
First Grade Student, Ontario-Montclair School District
You can help! For example, $150 can sponsor a child to receive a backpack of food each weekend for a year, and provides a child nourishment and a sense of belonging.

Teaching Smart Fitness & Nutrition
| On Thursday, April 29, Inland Empire United Way hosted its first Teaching Smart forum event. The Teaching Smart forums are an expansion of IEUW's School Tools program. The first forum focused on fun, creative methods for integrating fitness and nutrition into the classroom. "The goal of the Teaching Smart network is to create a forum for teachers to express concerns, ask questions, get information and connect with other teachers," said Lorraine Ousley, Director of Education & Health Initiatives at Inland Empire United Way. "We plan to host future events that touch on a wide variety of topics, based on input from our teachers." The forum was coordinated by Pomona College intern Marina Kucic and facilitated by Angelica Baltazar of San Bernardino County Department of Public Health/Healthy Communities Program. "The Teaching Smart forums are a great resource for teachers," said Ms. Baltazar. "Sharing with educators fun and easy ways to incorporate fitness and nutrition into their curriculum encourages our youth and our community to live a more active and healthy lifestyle." Debbie Tougas, creator of "Coursing Around," gave a demonstration and presentation on her book. She has developed a compilation of sidewalk chalk courses and accompanying activities geared toward children ages 5-15 that combines fitness with social and educational components. In addition, Polina Marian, owner of Addicted to Yoga in Chino, conducted a short presentation on yoga in the classroom. Addicted to Yoga is a studio that caters to participants at all levels, and has provided free workshops for low-income families in the Inland Empire. Melani Sadanala from San Bernardino County Department of Public Health provided nutrition information and resources. Nutritious food for this event was generously donated by Riverside Grill in Chino.

Presenter Polina Marian, Addicted to Yoga; Event Coordinator Marina Kucic, Pomona College; Presenter Debbie Tougas, Coursing Around; Facilitator Angelica Baltazar, San Bernardino County Healthy Communities. Thanks to all for a great event! |
