We are excited to celebrate the five-year anniversary of our Kids Pack program!
Currently participating in the Kids Pack program are: Fontana Unified, Ontario-Montclair, Chino Valley Unified, Redlands Unified, and Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School Districts. We are also pleased to provide Kids Pack to Apple Valley, Hesperia Unified and Lucerne Valley Unified School Districts in conjunction with Desert Communities United Way.
For the 2009-10 school year, we anticipate providing 1,500 Kids Packs per week!
Our annual Kids Pack Partners Meeting was held on October 22. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring our "front line" program partners together and discuss not only Kids Pack protocols, but also to share stories and discuss any difficulties and successes.
We enjoyed having the opportunity to connect with everyone and thank them for the hard work that they do every day.
As always, we would like to thank all our volunteers that come in and assemble Kids Packs every week. Our volunteers make the program possible and we truly appreciate their time!

School Tools
As School Tools enters its fourth year, we are pleased to add two new components to our program: the Supply Closet and the Teaching Smart network. These two new components will enhance our existing programming and allow us to better serve our community's students and their teachers.
Teacher Resource Center The School Tools Teacher Resource Center (TRC) provides disadvantaged children with the supplies they need to learn and succeed. Through the TRC, teachers from eligible schools have the unique opportunity to "shop" for supplies for their students and classroom twice a year - completely FREE of charge! In a retail-like setting, teachers are able to choose from a wide array of new products including basic school supplies, books, fun incentives, basic needs items, and arts and crafts supplies that encourage creativity. School Tools is an affiliate of the Kids In Need Foundation National Network of Resource Centers.
Supply Closet In an effort to support additional students and classrooms, the School Tools Supply Closet conducts special distribution events held throughout the year. Pre-assembled supply kits consisting of a variety of new, surplus product are provided to teachers on an "invitation only" basis.
Teaching Smart Teaching Smart, a network specifically for teachers of disadvantaged students, is designed to provide our teachers with resources beyond school supplies. The goal of the Teaching Smart network is to create a forum for teachers to express concerns, ask questions, connect with other teachers, and generate solutions. Based on teacher feedback, components may include panel or group discussions, online forums, social events, mentoring relationships, speakers, presentations, and other resources.

UPS Aircraft Maintenance
We would like to extend a big "THANK YOU" to Kaye Thomas and UPS Aircraft Maintenance employees for their exceptional fundraising efforts! Year after year, they go the extra mile to support our programs. In addition to their work place campaign and outstanding volunteer efforts, they host special event fundraisers to benefit KidSmart. Our most sincere thanks to UPS Aircraft Maintenance; we couldn't do it without you!

Meet Our Interns |
|
Sarah and Amanda recently helped us promote fitness and nutrition at the San Bernardino County tent during NASCAR race weekend at Auto Club Speedway.
My name is Sarah Abelow. I am in my third year at Pomona College where I am pursuing a double major in History and French. After moving to Southern California from New York City, working at KidSmart has helped me to understand the communities that surround me in the Inland Empire. As an Intern with KidSmart, I have been working to develop Teaching Smart, a new component of the School Tools program. Teaching Smart aims to create a network of teachers to discuss issues, challenges and solutions that teachers in low-income schools face. After analyzing the data collected from surveys that identify the issues that teachers want to tackle, we will pick a subject and a format to launch the first of many events for this program.
My name is Amanda Wilmsen and I am currently a sophomore at Pomona College in Claremont, studying anthropology with minors in environmental analysis and Spanish. I am originally from Albany, California, a small town just north of Berkeley in the Bay Area. Currently I am working as a Program Intern with United Way's Education and Health Initiative. I work mostly with the School Tools program, helping with inventory, stock and merchandising for the Teacher Resource Center. I am also helping to set protocols for the distribution of school supplies through the Teacher Resource Center.
