Honoring Cesar Chavez 2009
Throughout the month of March

HandsOn Inland Empire encouraged the community to "Get inspired to serve by learning Cesar Chavez's ten core values from which he lived his life."

During the month of March, HandsOn Inland Empire posted descriptions of Cesar Chavez's values and linked each one to a service opportunity that exemplified that value.

The month of March logged in approximately 600 hours of volunteering.

Service 101
A Successful Start

Service 101 got off to a successful start, with 15 volunteers for its first project of the series.

The first project focused on the environmental issue of recycling with a special interest in urban communities. The volunteers gathered at the Renacimento Community Center in the City of Pomona to learn and make an impact on this issue.

Volunteers engaged in a service learning piece for the first 30 minutes which included a carbon footprint practice sheet to give the volunteers an idea of their current impact on the environment.

The volunteers then proceeded to set-up a recycling station for the center, which included decorating recycling bins, decorating the arts and crafts walls and organizing the centers new food pantry.

The response was very positive and the volunteers said the project was very informative and enjoyable as well.

Teens Make a Difference (TMAD)
What is the Teens Make a Difference Program?

TMAD is a program that recognizes the amazing work young people do in their community!

This program is designed for high school students only, and is ongoing although timesheets are due each April 1st in order to participate in the annual recognition ceremony.

You can get started anytime by volunteering and logging hours toward your year-end total on a TMAD timesheet.

Any volunteering at a nonprofit or community-based organization may be included on your timesheet. (Sorry: volunteering at dad's insurance company or babysitting your sister doesn't count.)

Be sure to log ALL your hours and have the volunteer coordinator sign it each time you volunteer.

Libraries, hospitals and participating schools are some of the places where you can give your time and make a difference!
