2-1-1 True Story
Empowered
Upon conducting a call back survey, one of our 2-1-1 call specialists spoke with a 61 year old man who lives in Victorville.

He originally called 2-1-1 after listening to a family member talk about 2-1-1 and decided he would call for himself and find out "what the big deal was."

He dialed 2-1-1 for information, however, after speaking with a call specialist he realized he was in need of In Home Support Services (IHSS). "I didn't realize there was such a thing as IHSS, I thought that was something your family had to do," he said.

He went on to say that his children had become busy with work and he felt embarrassed asking them to help on a daily basis.

He contacted IHSS and they were able to help him with trips to grocery stores, medical appointments and assistance with laundry.

He thanked 2-1-1 for providing the right information, which empowered him to live a healthy, comfortable life.

Agency Spotlight
Samaritan's Helping Hands

Since 2005, Samaritan's Helping Hands, an agency of St. John of God Health Care Services, a non-profit organization in Victorville, CA has helped the High Desert community through many social services.

The agency provides a variety of services through programs much needed in the areas of rental assistance, utility assistance and motel vouchers for the homeless.

Samaritan's Helping Hands also runs a food pantry which includes baby food, diapers and formula as well as hygiene products for those in need.

At the time, the agency assisted an average of about 20 families per week. Samaritan's Helping Hands now services an average of 500 families per month through various services and receives an average of 3,500 to 6,000 calls every month.

So far this fiscal year, they have serviced 5,000 families - almost 7,000 adults and 7,600 children.

Except for 2 employees, which includes their program manager and assistant, the Samaritan's Helping Hands staff is made up of wonderful community volunteers!
