2009 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service a Success |
HandsOn Inland Empire's 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service was a success due to the efforts of each and every one of our dedicated volunteers, community partners and supporters.
Collectively, more than 300 volunteers served on Monday, January 19th and impacted six local communities and reached out to more than 2,000 people in those communities.
Volunteers engaged in school and neighborhood clean-ups, gardening projects, mural paintings and renovation projects.
Portofino Villas residents in Pomona engaged in discussion about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with volunteers.
Phi Sigma Sigma ladies help organize and add color to a bathroom at the safe haven and put up a new shower curtain.
Claremont's Pitzer College JumpStart program members helped decorate puppets for the children who visit the safe haven.
University of La Verne's Phi Sigma Sigma, Theta Upsilon chapter members helped spruce up the safe haven in the Abbey/Karesh neighborhood in Pomona.
These volunteers made a positive impact and walked away with a great sense of accomplishment and community.
"It's a feeling of individual empowerment," Dionna Houston, University of La Verne and Phi Sigma Sigma sorority member said.
Houston's sorority came out to participate in the neighborhood clean up in the City of Pomona and helped to renovate a safe haven.
HandsOn Inland Empire is grateful for all those who came out to show their support and made it a day on, not a day off on Monday, January 19, 2009.
