| KidSmart |
|
The Inland Empire United Way KidSmart initiative provides disadvantaged children with the resources they need to learn and succeed in school.
All children deserve the tools that will inspire and prepare them for a better future. By removing barriers to success, KidSmart programs are working in our community to alleviate childhood hunger and food insecurity, encourage fitness and good nutrition for kids, and provide supplies for school and to meet other basic needs.
We partner with local schools, companies, community organizations, and volunteers to accomplish these goals. Inland Empire United Way and its partners are achieving results through KidSmart programs:
- School Tools
- Kids Cafe
- Healthy Kids
Thank you KidSmart Volunteers! For the 2007-2008 program year, IEUW KidSmart hosted 868 volunteers, who generously donated 3,690 hours of service. |

Working in partnership with local schools, case management organizations, businesses, and community groups, the Kids Pack program provides backpacks of nutritious food to homeless and very low-income children during the weekends, when school meals are not available.
In 2007-08, Kids Pack served 1,148 children in 5 school districts and 46 schools.
With students in the Kids Pack program, teachers reported:
- 45% were more attentive in class
- 40% improved their attitude towards school
- 44% participated to a greater degree
- 41% improved their academic performance (grades)
- 57% showed an overall improvement in school
School Tools provides disadvantaged children with the supplies they need to succeed. Through our Teacher Resource Center (TRC), teachers from eligible schools have the unique opportunity to "shop" for supplies for their students and classroom twice a year-completely free of charge!
In 2007-08, the School Tools TRC served 21 schools in 5 different districts. 625 teachers visited the TRC, distributing more than $460,000 worth of new school supplies and directly benefiting 18,260 low-income students in our community.
School Tools program outcomes include the following:
- Students with adequate supplies to complete in-class assignments increased from 44% to 93%
- Students with adequate supplies to complete assignments at home increased from 2% to 97%
- 92% of teachers improved and expanded their instruction as a result of participating in School Tools
- More than 90% of teachers said they did a better job teaching as a result of participating in School Tools

MLK Day HandsOn Inland Empire is pleased to announce our plans to host a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 18 and 19, 2009.

Through our work around the Dr. King holiday, our organization will honor his life, teachings, and legacy through community service that helps provides tangible opportunities for volunteers, corporations, and community leaders and organizations to participate in service projects geared at increasing social justice in the communities where they reside.
The day will be composed of three efforts:
- One large scale project designed to empower disadvantaged communities through a neighborhood revitalization event
- Numerous small scale and volunteer led projects that provide opportunities for volunteers to take a lead role in transforming their community
- Issue education and reflection that highlights Dr. King's teachings and engages the community in dialogue that leads to solutions to critical community issues
So grab a hammer, paintbrush, shovel, or broom and join us in a community revitalization project. By working together, we can honor Dr. King and improve the quality of life in communities throughout the Inland Empire!
