  Cailin's Story

I had no idea what I was in for when my third child came home. I have known for as long as I could remember that I would adopt children. It just made sense to me. My husband and I had a conversation about adoption prior to our engagement and several conversations during our engagement and in our first year of marriage. I researched, read books, talked to other moms, joined online groups... and finally my son came home. I was so excited to meet him. He was adorable, big fat cheeks, a black Mohawk that stuck up on the top of his little head.

The day after he arrived at the airport my husband got on a plane and left the country. I was home with a 4 year old, a 22 month old and a brand new 6 month old. My youngest was on a schedule exactly 12 hours opposite my time, he had severe eczema and was so uncomfortable, and he really, really wanted to go home. When he would wake up from a nap he would peer at me through slit eyes and realize I was not his foster mother and start to cry inconsolably. By the third day I had had no sleep and then the 22 month old ate the dog's Rimadyl. After a call to poison control and a frantic run to the pharmacy for ipecac syrup I realized I was out of milk and out of formula.

I called a woman whose daughter was in my daughter's preschool class and in tears explained I needed formula and really couldn't handle the grocery store. She was on the preschool board and went to a meeting that night and said, "Cailin needs help." Thank Goodness! The board immediately came up with a meal plan and started bringing in dinners. This got us through the first two weeks.  Full Article...
