Spring has sprung and races have begun |
Welcome to the Southwest Region's quarterly newsletter!
2011 is sure to be an exciting year for training, racing and living the multisport lifestyle in the USAT Southwest Region. Whether you are looking to connect with other multisport athletes, gain new skills and knowledge about training or racing or are ready to test yourself at a regional championship event, we've got something for everyone. Opportunities abound for youth or juniors just starting out in the sport and beginner and seasoned veterans alike. This year each state comprising the Southwest Region is fortunate to host a major multisport championship event. The USAT Duathlon and Paraduathlon National Championship happens in Tucson, AZ on April 30. The USAT Junior and Youth National Championship is on August 6 in San Diego, CA and the ITU Long Course Triathlon World Championship takes place on November 5 in Henderson, NV. Set your goals, register and commit to some races. You will be pleased with the topnotch events taking place in Arizona, California and Nevada! |

Southwest Region Duathlon Champions Crowned |
Run-bike-run specialists toed the line at the TriSports.com Desert Classic Duathlon in McDowell Mountain Regional Park, near Phoenix, AZ on February 20 to challenge for the USAT Southwest Region Duathlon Championship. This early season event gave athletes an opportunity to test their fitness, gauge their efforts against top competition and plan for further preparations on the road to the USAT Duathlon National Championship happening on April 30 in Tucson, AZ. Organized by the Phoenix Triathlon Club, the race consisted of a 3.5-mile run, 21-mile bike and 3-mile run. Nathan White earned the men's elite crown crossing the line first in 1:26:35 with Jordan Rapp securing second place in 1:26:38. Lewis Elliott posted 1:27:29 to finish third. The elite women's race was won by Leanda Cave (1:40:36) with Melanie McQuaid (1:41:05) and Christine Jeffrey (1:44:22) rounding out the top three. In the men's age group race, Ryan Stevens was the overall champion, breaking the tape in 1:35:55.
Lyndsey Clapperton topped the women's age group competition finishing in 1:49:48.

USAT Southwest Region F1 Series |
 The new USAT Southwest Region F1 Series for youth triathletes is in full swing! The F1 Series is a four-event series designed to help young triathletes transition from entry level youth and kids triathlons to draft legal youth elite and junior elite competition. The Triathlon Club of San Diego, in conjunction with their TriJuniors program directed the first event of the series which took place on March 19 on Fiesta Island, near San Diego, CA. The next two F1 series event are happening on April 9 and May 14 respectively. The final event, the USAT Southwest F1 series championship is scheduled for September 10 in Pacific Grove, CA. Athletes compete in the following age groups, 12-15 and 16-18. For more information and to register click here.

Register now - USAT Duathon National Championship |
At the end of the month, duathletes will converge on Tucson, AZ for the USAT Duathlon National Championship. The 5k-35k-5k run/bike/run competition will qualify athletes for the 2011 ITU Duathlon World Championship in Gijon, Spain. Don't miss your opportunity to race in a beautiful place, compete with fellow duathletes and vie for your chance to qualify for Team USA! The top 18 athletes in each age group with roll-downs to 24th place will qualify for worlds.

USAT Junior Triathlon Skills Camp West |
 Attention 12 to 19 year olds. Register now for the USAT Junior Triathlon Skills West Camp happening June 27 through July 1.
