Santa Cruz Triathlon - Southwest Regional Club Championships

The 27th annual Santa Cruz Triathlon, a non-profit event that benefits local athletic and community groups, was held Sunday, September 20th.  The 2009 Southwest Regional Club Championships, Santa Cruz welcomed over 900 athletes competing in the 1.5k / 40k / 10k event.  Athletes braved the brisk ocean swim around the Santa Cruz Municipal Pier, the challenging, rolling bike course along Highway 1 and tested their legs on a fast out and back run.  Overall winners were Sami Inkinen, 34 of San Francisco (1:56:11) and Rosalinda Castaneda, 26 of Palo Alto (2:13:11). 

As the official 2009 Southwest Regional Club Championships, Santa Cruz crowned club championship titles in four divisions based on club membership size. Congratulations to all athletes and the club champions!

Earn your Stripes! USAT Official Certification Clinics in Arizona & Nevada
Do you have a passion for triathlon and enjoy giving back to the sport? The Southwest Region needs YOU! Become a certified USA Triathlon official and help enforce USAT rules and keep our region's athletes safe on the race course.

There are two upcoming USAT Official certification clinics:
 
Clinic date: Saturday, October 24, 2009 (afternoon)
Location: Tempe, Arizona
Practicum Race: SOMA Triathlon. Sunday, October 25, 2009.

Clinic date:
Saturday, November 7, 2009 (12 - 3pm)
Location: Henderson, Nevada
Practicum Race: Silverman Triathlon. Sunday, November 8, 2009

There is no charge to attend the clinic and become a USA Triathlon official, but you must be a USAT member. 
 The Officials Certification Clinic consists of approximately three hours of classroom lecture and discussion. Each clinic has a limited number of slots and applicants are urged to contact the clinic instructor to reserve a space early.
 
Clinic participants are expected to attend the lecture and work the following day at the associated practicum race. You must be able to participate in both the lecture and the race in order to attend the clinic and become certified.

Southwest Region Collegiate Triathlon Camp 2009
December 4-6, 2009
Lake San Antonio, CA (Wildflower site)

Collegiate athletes: don't miss this opportunity to work with top USAT coaches, sharpen and hone your triathlon skills, train with your friends and meet new ones at the first annual Southwest Region Collegiate Training Camp.

The Southwest Region Collegiate Training Camp is the perfect place to enhance your triathlon skills under the supervision of an expert coaching staff. Participants will take part in daily swim, bike and run workouts. Athletes will receive one-on-one sport-specific instruction, as well as lessons in goal setting, the art of balancing school and triathlon training, nutrition (race day and daily) and race strategy for competition. Emphasis will be placed on developing good bike handling skills and road safety, open water specific swim skills, correct running form, transition skills for efficiency and speed as well as many other multisport related skills.  Athletes will enjoy getting to know peers who share a similar interest and passion for the sport of triathlon.  This camp is open to all levels of interested college age triathletes.

Silverman is the Southwest Region Long Course Championship

The fall racing season brings with it a long course favorite, the Silverman Triathlon in Henderson, Nevada.  This year the Silverman is celebrating its 5th anniversary and plays host as the USAT-Southwest Region's Long course Championship. 
 
The Silverman is conducted under the leadership of USAT certified race director, Frank Lowery, so you can be sure of a top notch event.
