Wood Carved Bunny

Sitting Bunny

Hector Rascon specializes in carving saints (santos), angels, burros and bunnies from cottonwood and aspen trees. He uses a chainsaw, eight very sharp chisels, and a band saw. His creations feature incredibly sensitive, soulful faces, and they reflect his spirit in their eyes.

Hector is one of the best-known living Hispanic folk artists in New Mexico. His carvings are shown in galleries throughout the Southwest. He learned to carve santos from Benjamin Ortega, who is perhaps New Mexico's most famous carver. In 1977 Hector began carving his own creations, and he has carved thousands of different sculptures in his lifetime!

This charming bunny is especially appropriate at this time of the year as spring brings all kinds of new life to us.

Turquoise Trail Pottery
  Turquoise Trail Pitcher

People have used pottery for thousands of years for food storage, decoration and artistic expression. There are three main types of pottery: earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. However, because clay recipes, firing conditions and glazing options can vary greatly within these categories, an endless array of pottery is produced for a number of applications.

This "turquoise trail" earthenware pitcher was handcrafted by Janet Williams of Santa Fe.

Carlton Gallegos is a straw applique artist from the Santa Ana Pueblo. The art of straw applique is done by many Hispanic artists in New Mexico, but very few Pueblo artists. Carlton's work has contributed to the preservation of this traditional folk art. Today he still works and lives at the Santa Ana Pueblo, in New Mexico.
