Rosewood and Sterling Silver - a glorious combination

Rosewood Candlestick Holders

Silver Seduction Exhibit Ends January 2, 2011 at the Museum of International Folk Art

Antonio Pineda was a silversmith who worked in the Taller de Las Delicias in Taxco, Mexico ~ the workshop originally set up by William Spratling.  Taxco is a colonial city located between Acapulco and Mexico City where Spratling, an American expatriate professor of architecture and a writer, moved in 1929.  He set up his shop and hired silversmiths and other craftsmen to make silver jewelry and other silver objects, tin ware, copper ware, textiles and furniture that he designed.  He encouraged his craftsmen to expand their horizons and open their own shops in the area.  Because of his influence on the silver industry he is known as "The Father of Mexican Silver".

Antonio Pineda became one of the most influential designers of jewelry in Mexico and at one time employed 80 craftspeople in his workshop.  The exhibit at the Museum of International Folk Art ~  Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda will end on Sunday, January 2.  This is the last opportunity to see this beautiful collection before it travels to Mexico City.

Mexico has always been a treasure trove of art and craft, color and tradition.  Inspired by their historical traditions, from Maya-Inca-Aztec designs to the paintings of Frida Kahlo and the beauty of their colonial cities, Mexico has an artistic style of international renown.

Insightful, Wise, and Protective

Owl Pin That is how William Spratling felt about Marciel Chavez whom he called "my chief collaborator" and who created this charming tecolote (owl) pin.  Ninety-four year old, Marciel still sits at his jewelry bench in Taxco and works with sterling silver.  He made this pendant many years ago - he, and the owl pin are One of a Kind!!!!!
