Stunning Art Work by New Mexico Artists: New Mexico Creates
A Day for Peace

Mother's Day for Peace, Mothering Day, Mother's Day. These occasions have something in common: respect for our mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, grandmothers and nieces and the hope for peace. Today, in honor of this celebration, we feature the wonderful work of four talented women jewelers as part of New Mexico Creates.

Wanda Lobito

Even as a child, Wanda Lobito felt a deep connection to New Mexico on her travels here. She eventually moved to this state and to the craft of jewelry making in a rather indirect way. On her arrival in New Mexico, she says, , "I had no idea what I was going to do. I never knew that I would make a living making jewelry. I'm so grateful that people respond to it. It's seems to touch something deep within them." For the past eight years, Wanda has been working full time creating unique pieces such as this beautiful rose and antique faceted red glass bead necklace. It is elegant and classic in design; what a beautiful gift for any woman in your life---even yourself!

Kristin Lora

Kristin Lora has been designing and creating jewelry and art objects for over 35 years. She works in many different types of metal, creating beautiful wearable art that is contemporary, yet hand-made. She uses inspiration from found objects in the creation of some of her designs. With a degree in zoology and an MBA from Cornell University, Kristin worked for years in the corporate world. In the past decade she moved to Santa Fe, where she has concentrated solely on her jewelry designs, such as these wonderful silver dotted hoop earrings

Aleta Ford Baker

There is a wonderful sense of beauty and fine craftsmanship in the jewelry of Aleta Ford Baker. A self-taught jeweler, she began studying the craft in high school, as she says, "I got one of the best silversmithing books and learned how to do it." Baker then focused on beadwork, which is evident in her pieces, where she often strings beads along the chain of necklaces. She uses a dazzling array of stones, such as in this splendid cluster necklace, which features moonstone, pearls, turquoise, amazonite, chrysophase and peridot. As she says, "I consider myself a beadweaving artist rather than a silversmith."

Jolene Eustace
Sugilite and Moonstone Earrings

From a large, artistic family, Jolene grew up in Albuquerque, watching her parents Ben and Felicita Eustace make jewelry at home. She studied in New Mexico at both the Institute of American Indian Arts and University of New Mexico and for a time in Germany. For the past 25 years, Jolene's work has continued to evolve, but it is distinctive for her creative use of gold on silver, and her varied rain cloud, lightning and leaf designs, as in these gorgeous suglite, moonstone and silver earrings.

Mother's Day- What's it All About? Events celebrating the Mother, first in goddess form, have roots back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. In England in medieval times, a celebration called Mothering Day was begun. At different junctures, both Julia Ward Howe (of Battle Hymn of the Republic fame) and Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis promoted a "Mother's Day for Peace" - a campaign to rise up against war and to promote women's rights. It was through Jarvis' daughter's efforts that Mother's Day as we know it was officially proclaimed a national holiday in the United States in 1914. It is meant to be a time of honor and rememberance as well as an enduring hope for peace.

More Ideas!
Here are some other wonderful gift ideas for the celebration: How about luscious Bath and Body Products, or a scrumptious Silk Scarf or Wrap. Mom would also appreciate beautiful hand made Ceramic Dinnerware, Tiles or Vases for the occasion. All made in New Mexico, by artisans that live in the state.
