MANUAL for TEACHERS

"God's teachers choose to look on dreams a while. It is a conscious choice. For they have learned that all choices are made consciously, with full awareness of their consequences. The dream says otherwise, but who would put his faith in dreams, once they are recognized for what they are? Awareness of dreaming is the real function of God's teachers. They watch the dream figures come and go, shift and change, suffer and die. Yet they are not deceived by what they see. They recognize that to behold a dream figure as sick and separate is no more real than to regard it as healthy and beautiful. Unity alone is not a thing of dreams. And it is this God's teachers acknowledge as behind the dream, beyond all seeing and yet surely theirs."

It will be given me because I have

 What is a Miracle?

IAMBIC PENTAMETER

A miracle is a correction. It

does not create, nor really change at all.

It merely looks on devastation, and

reminds the mind that what it sees is false.

It undoes error, but does not attempt

to go beyond perception, nor exceed

the function of forgiveness. Thus it stays

within time's limits. Yet it paves the way

for the return of timelessness and love's

awakening, for fear must slip away

under the gentle remedy it gives.

A miracle contains the gift of grace,

for it is given and received as one.

And thus it illustrates the law of truth

the world does not obey, because it fails

   entirely to understand its ways.

   A miracle inverts perception, which

was upside-down before, and thus it ends

the strange distortions that were manifest.

Now is perception open to the truth.

   Now is forgiveness fully justified.

Forgiveness is the home of miracles.

The eyes of Christ delivers them to all

they look upon in mercy and in love.

Perception stands corrected in His sight,

and what was meant to curse has come to bless.

Each lily of forgiveness offers all

the world the silent miracle of love.

And each is laid before the Word of God

   upon the universal altar to

Creator and creation, in the Light

of perfect purity and endless peace.

The miracle is taken first on faith,

because to ask for it implies the mind

has been made ready to conceive of what

it cannot see and does not understand.

Yet faith will bring its witnesses, to show

that what it rested on is really there.

And thus the miracle will justify your faith

in it, and show it rested on a world

   more real than what you saw before;

a world redeemed from what you thought you saw.

Miracles fall like drops of healing rain

from Heaven on a dry and dusty world,

where starved and thirsty creatures came to die.

Now have they water. Now the world is green.

And everywhere the signs of life spring up,

to show that what is born can never die,

for what has life has immortality.

ACIM Edmonton, CA

Lesson  349
Today I let Christ's vision look upon
All things for me and judge them not, but give
Each one a miracle of love instead
.

Sarah's Commentary:

"Today I let Christ's vision look upon all things for me and judge them not, but give each one a miracle of love instead". Isn't that precisely our choice in each situation before us? We can either decide it is not to our liking, not what we bargained for, not what we expected or we can let our own judgments go about how the situation should have been go and allow instead to allow the miracle to replace all grievances. What are you upset about today? Every day does seem to bring some upsets, some seemingly bigger than others. But will we allow them to rule our day or is there a better way? The lesson says that if we obey the law of love, then we need to give exactly that which we want for ourselves. If we really knew that with each attack it is as if we were hurting only ourselves, could we really keep up the attacks? And if we want to receive the miracle, we must be prepared to give it. And to give it is to release our judgments, our expectations and our plans for how things should be.

What is it to see with Christ's vision? It is to see someone past their body and their personality. It is to recognize that we all share the same nature. We are all holy. We are looking beyond the illusion and seeing the truth of who someone is. We are basically refusing to share a perception of littleness in anyone, including ourselves. We release our belief that we are limited by our body identity and that we are defined by our personalities.

To let Christ's vision look upon all things for me and judge them not is to give everyone a miracle. It is to see everyone as innocent and as loveable. How do I liberate all things and give them the freedom I see? (1.1) The answer to that question is that I obey the law of love. But what is this law? It is to give whatever it is I want to receive. In this instance we are giving the gift of freedom and that gift releases us from judgment. It is our judgments that keep us in bondage.

Judgment is a weapon that we use against ourselves. It binds us to anger as lesson 347 affirms. It reflects our fear. When we refuse to judge, which is to compare and to condemn, and instead, accept everyone fully, we see our own love and innocence reflected everywhere. Then we know that we too are free. But when we join with our brothers and sisters with love, we are not simply covering over our anger at them. Nor are we falsely sympathetic which the Course calls false empathy. If we have these kinds of thoughts we release them for healing so that we can know the holiness of our own minds. We ask for help from the Holy Spirit so that we can join with our brother's strengths (true empathy) and release any feelings of anger or fear we have toward them.

Jesus recognizes our instability on this path when he says "you who are sometimes sad and sometimes angry; who sometimes feel your just due is not given you, and your best efforts meet with lack of appreciation and even contempt; give up these foolish thoughts! They are too small and meaningless to occupy your holy mind an instant longer. God's judgment waits for you to set you free" (M. 15.3.1) And what is God's judgment of us? that we are holy, never sinned and are forever innocent.

Then he goes on to ask us "What can the world hold out to you, regardless of your judgments on its gifts ( what I think I want) that you would rather have?" (M.15.3.4)Haven't we all felt like we have tried so hard to do the right and proper things but that the world responds with contempt or indifference to us? These are the kinds of thoughts we need to give up. These are the thoughts that Jesus calls our foolish thoughts. These thoughts keep us from knowing the holiness and innocence of our own minds. They keep us in a state of victimhood where we believe that we are not getting our fair shake. But we have only one purpose in being here and that is to recognize our holiness so we can offer it to everyone. It is not about trying to achieve new beliefs but giving up the false beliefs we now hold. It is not about making a better self (ego) but giving up our private thoughts and recognizing the truth about the Self that we are.

The decision we make in each encounter today is to liberate everyone we see or everyone we hold in some kind of bondage. In other words do we choose heaven or hell for ourselves because whatever we give we receive.

"Our Father knows our needs. He gives us grace to meet them all. And so we trust in Him to send us miracles to bless the world, and heal our minds as we return to Him" (349.2)

A Course in Miracles

MANUAL FOR TEACHERS

12. How Many Teachers of God Are Needed To Save the World?

1 The answer to this question is "one." One wholly perfect teacher whose learning is complete suffices. This One, sanctified and redeemed, becomes the Self Who is the Son of God. He who was always wholly spirit now no longer sees Himself as a body or even as in a body. Therefore He is limitless. And being limitless, His thoughts are joined with God's forever and ever. His perception of himself is based upon God's Judgment, not His own. Thus does He share God's Will, and bring His Thoughts to still deluded minds. He is forever One because He is as God created Him. He has accepted Christ, and He is saved.

2 Thus does the son of man become the Son of God. It is not really a change; it is a change of mind. Nothing external alters, but everything internal now reflects only the love of God. God can no longer be feared, for the mind sees no cause for punishment. God's teachers appear to be many, for that is the world's need. Yet being joined in one purpose, and one they share with God, how could they be separate from each other? What does it matter if they then appear in many forms? Their minds are one; their joining is complete. And God works through them now as One, for that is what they are.

3 Why is the illusion of many necessary? Only because reality is not understandable to the deluded. Only a very few can hear God's Voice at all, and even they cannot communicate His messages directly through the Spirit Which gave them. They need a medium through which communication becomes possible to those who do not realize that they are spirit. A body they can see. A voice they understand and listen to without the fear that truth would encounter in them. Do not forget that truth can come only where it is welcomed without fear. So do God's teachers need a body, for their unity could not be recognized directly.

4 Yet what makes them God's teachers is their recognition of the proper purpose of the body. As they advance in their profession, they become more and more certain that the body's function is but to let God's Voice speak through it to human ears. And these ears will carry to the mind of the hearer messages which are not of this world, and the mind will understand because of their Source. From this understanding will come the recognition in this new teacher of God of what the body's purpose really is; the only use there really is for it. This lesson is enough to let the thought of unity come in, and what is one is recognized as one. The teachers of God appear to share the illusion of separation, but because of what they use the body for, they do not believe in the illusion despite appearances.

5 The central lesson is always this-that what you use the body for, it will become to you. Use it for sin or for attack, which is the same as sin, and you will see it as sinful. Because it is sinful, it is weak, and being weak, it suffers and it dies. Use it to bring the Word of God to those who have it not, and the body becomes holy. Because it is holy it cannot be sick, nor can it die. When its usefulness is done, it is laid by, and that is all. The mind makes this decision, as it makes all decisions which are responsible for the body's condition. Yet the teacher of God does not make this decision alone. To do that would be to give the body another purpose from the one that keeps it holy. God's Voice will tell him when he has fulfilled his role, just as It tells him what his function is. He does not suffer either in going or remaining. Sickness is now impossible to him.

6 Oneness and sickness cannot co-exist. God's teachers choose to look on dreams a while. And it is this God's teachers acknowledge as behind the dream, beyond all seeing and yet surely theirs.
