INSIDE THIS ISSUE

This is the month in which we celebrate the return of SPRING and everything that idea brings to Mind: New growth, Renewal, Revival, Resurgence, Rejuvenation..."Re" everything! Once again  The Course in Miracles Society ♥ has the incredible opportunity of bringing through some Guidance as expressed by several "Aspects of Our Infinitude".

Our MARCH issue begins with an article by Judith  B. Allen which asks the question: "Are supernormal abilities the spawn of the devil, or a gift from the Divine?" In this, Judith's second novel

Looking Through Water, that is the question asked by Addie to her parents who have different ideas regarding the Source of Addie's gift of a healing touch. Judy, herself, had a miraculous healing of metastasized breast cancer in 1985 which she attributes to her intense study of A Course in Miracles. The healing actually resulted in a non-fiction book, The Five Stages of Getting Well, published in 1992. The current book Looking Through Water, excerpted in this newsletter and published in 2010, came in response to the challenges Judy faced upon the death of her younger brother who died of metastasized melanoma in 1996. A sequel is already in the making.

GAFF, a fictional character developed by Dr. Lorena Peter, continues interacting with his friend Priscilla as they discuss the lessons of A Course in Miracles. This article, Wally Takes on Mother Water, is the third in a new series of articles "GAFF Helps with Priscilla's ACIM Lessons" written specifically for our Newsletter by Dr. Lorena Peter. Lorena is author of the book  "Gaff: Wisdom from the Sea".

Amy Torres is a Gestalt psychotherapist and teaches A Course in Miracles which forms the foundation of her work in New York City. She is also a yoga teacher, an EFT and Reiki practitioner, and a writer. We are pleased to share how Amy relates the ancient system of Yoga to the Course in her article "The Yoga of A Course in Miracles".

We are continuing our DARE TO BE HAPPY segment with another article submitted by Daniel Tipton, one of our CIMS members. Our newsletter this month is presenting the third article titled: Meditation.  Daniel is an active member of the CIMS Omaha contingent, is participating in the CMC ministerial program and attended the CMC Annual 2011 Conference in San Francisco last weekend.

Susan Dugan has submitted another essay for our delight called: "Crusader Rabbit Retires". Susan appeared in A Course in Miracles: The Movie and has had articles in our Newsletters in the past several months.  A book of her essays  "Extraordinary Ordinary Forgiveness", is scheduled for publication March 25, 2011 by O-Books and can be pre-ordered here.

CIMS member Carmen Cameron continues her ongoing Carmen's Good Questions section this month with the QUESTION: [Problem of work becoming a spiritual distraction] Check out Carmen's ANSWER ;-]

And finally, we have Guidance from our Elder Brother as received and scribed by Sun~Rose. This article offers Guidance titled Guidance On the Forgotten Song which is one of the most poetic and inspiring sections of A Course in Miracles.

The commentary on the 53 Miracle Principles, as these principles appear in the original edition [oe] published by CIMS, and in previous CIM newsletters, is now available in a book by Sun~Rose entitled: "YOU ARE LOVED AND SAFE:Prep Notes for Experiencing God's Love".

!!!ANNOUNCEMENT ~ GERMAN Original Edition!!

Looking Through Water

My recently published novel began to stir in my mind thoughts of my own miraculous healing from metastasized breast cancer in 1985. I attribute my healing to my intense study and, finally, understanding of the principles of A Course in Miracles-most significantly, surrender to the Will of God whose purpose for me is only happiness.

That healing resulted in a non-fiction book, The Five Stages of Death and Dying Getting Well, published in 1992. When my much-loved younger brother Tim died of metastasized melanoma in 1996, all of my understandings about healing were deeply challenged, and a novel began to take shape. After the story had topped 500 pages, it was clear I was writing two stories, one being the first part of the story, which is picked up years later in the second novel. This first novel became Looking Through Water published in 2010, with a sequel to follow.

"Are supernormal abilities the spawn of the devil, or a gift from the Divine?"

In Looking Through Water, that is the question for Addie, gifted with a healing touch and caught between her parents, Jake and Rose Sawyer, who sharply disagree on the source of her gifts.

Growing up in an Oregon coastal town in the 40's and 50's, Addie at age five sees her grandpa's ghost at his funeral. Jake is horrified, and Rose, who covertly studies pre-Course paths to Truth, is captivated. When Addie later reveals an electrifying healing touch, her parents' conflicts over religious beliefs escalate, and the strictly literal Bible church founded by Jake's family gets involved. Addie, caught in the middle, assumes as children will, that she is the reason for her parents' battles, and tries to give up her healing gift.

When Magdalena, a famous healer from Finland, visits and becomes her mentor and friend, Addie is determined to make healing her life work. But when her healing touch saves her brother Joe's life, and the church gets wind of it, all hell breaks loose.

Addie struggles to save her family, understand her unique gifts, and plan a course for her future, while dealing with the calamities triggered by each of her parents.

Addie and her mother seek to understand the Divine, and many Course concepts pop up in pre-Course terms. You will recognize a "sacred moment," for example, as a holy instant. In this excerpt, Addie struggles to understand the ego. She uses a Finnish word, henki, as a name for the Voice for God, which she often hears inside herself. Kyky is the Finnish name for "gift," which she uses to name her healing touch.

The Yoga of A Course in Miracles
by Amy Torres*

A Course in Miracles with Amy Torres

A Course in Miracles (ACIM) offers us a highly individualized curriculum where we use the body as a learning device under the direction of the Holy Spirit. Yoga is one of the classrooms the Holy Spirit offers me to use my body for spiritual purposes.

ACIM provides a mind training, therefore all of its practices are in thought-form, or ideas. This can be challenging since the body demands our attention all day long. Yoga offers a body-based sadhana, or spiritual practice, using the body and breath to reconnect with God's Mind. This way, instead of letting the body run the show, we have concrete techniques so that the body serves the Mind.

"The body, valueless and hardly worth the least defence, need merely be perceived as quite apart from you, and it becomes a healthy, serviceable instrument through which the mind can operate until its usefulness is over." ACIM Workbook, Lesson 135.

Most of us think of yoga as a physical practice, but the physical movements or asanas, known as hatha yoga, is but one of five yoga systems. Hindu philosophy speaks of hatha yoga, raja yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga and karma yoga. Each of these systems can be used autonomously to realize God, or they can be used in combination.

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word "yuj" which means "to yoke" or "join" as in union with our brothers and communion with God. Swami Satchidananda defines yoga as "the science of mind" and explains that "the mind is a veil woven with thoughts." Yoga is a system that helps us harness the mind, because as long as the ego mind gives us the runaround, we'll remain unaware of the One Mind in which we all truly live.

Wally Takes on Mother Water

Thoughts of a Fisherman By Lorena Peter*

 Follow His LightBack to Top

Wally was in running shorts. Goose flesh raised the hair on his legs into a close resemblance to a scouring pad.
Gaff smiled at the thought, but only said, "Didn't expect it to be so cold today, did you?"
The other man didn't look up. He was preoccupied with wiping away a sheen of sweat from his arms with Gaff's towel. A nod and a grim expression were his only answer. Then he mumbled, "Was thinking about my sermon for Sunday when I saw you down here."
Gaff chuckled, "Jogging for Jesus, were you?"
The right reverend Wally jerked his head toward Gaff and spat out an indictment, "That is blasphemy!"
Gaff shrugged. Wally was in no trifling mood today. "Didn't mean to offend." He checked the tip of his rod for a sign and then nodded to Mother Water. He added quietly, "Are you saying Jesus didn't have a sense of humor?"
This last did not escape the attention of his visitor. "Jesus was a holy man, deserving of great respect. And you and that Mother Water crap... My sermon this Sunday is about pantheism...you are one of the worst." At this, he wound the towel around his body and plopped down on the cooler beside Gaff.
Gaff tried vainly to hide his grin. "Pantheism, hunh?"
"All this New Age garbage about the planet being alive and us being a part of it... and all a part of God. Hogwash!"
Gaff's eyebrows shot up. "New age, hunh? You saying the indigenous peoples were born yesterday?" He shut his eyes, ready for the explosion. No disappointment there. A chuckle... so predictable.
Wally sputtered, "You talking about the Mayans? That's all over the media. That and 2012 and the end of the world. Well, you know..."
Gaff's laugh stopped Wally mid-sentence and that was hard to do. "Do I ever mention the end of the world or that it's scheduled for any particular date?"
Wally shook his head in the negative. Gaff saw him about to take off in full rant and cut him off.
"Does it really matter whether we call the Supreme Being Mother Water or YHWH or George? As long as we teach people to live according to the Way of Love, I don't see that the name really matters."
            The sputtering started.
Gaff chuckled. "In fact, atheism is all right by me as long as the person treats others with respect and love. Call yourself whatever you want as long you respond with love in every situation."
"What are you talking about, you crazy old man? You can only be saved in Jesus' name!"
Gaff slipped the next in as Wally took a breath. "Don't see how you could not believe in a Supreme Being when you look at this paradise." He gestured .....

Crusader Rabbit Retires
by Susan Dugan*

By far the most popular of the humiliating nicknames I endured in junior high (Susan of Arc, Susan of Troy, etc.) was "Crusader Rabbit;" in honor of the TV cartoon character of the same name whose efforts to save the day from his nemesis Dudley Nightshade in constant reruns enthralled my brother MExtraordinary Ordinary Forgivenessichael and I  when we were little. Like Crusader Rabbit, I seemed to have come in with a keen eye for folly and an insatiable appetite for justice that belied mild-mannered first impressions.

I spent my childhood taking on neighborhood bullies and rescuing injured birds and animals.  In fifth grade I organized our class to remotely "adopt" a Korean child. By junior high, I attempted to launch Civil Rights and Vietnam War protests within a community then referred to as Nixon's "Silent Majority" for reasons that defied logic given the frequency and volume of their opinions. Although I theoretically had access to persuasion through my role as student council president and newspaper editor I had yet to learn that no amount of cajoling, educating, or bargaining could necessarily convince someone to change his mind. And I did not yet understand that morality in this world exists only in the eye of the beholder.

I spent another two decades seeking and never really finding justice in one way or another--through political activism, volunteering, and the written word--an exhausting and ultimately isolating experience. I couldn't figure out why people of my generation-even some of my friends--did not share the same perception of the world's troubles let alone solutions I did. More importantly, I didn't comprehend why nothing I worked for ever seemed to make a lasting difference, or why even when participating in groups in which members shared a common mission conflict and divisiveness reigned.  It wasn't until I found A Course in Miracles 7 years ago that I began to realize I had been looking for justice where it can never be found, but with a little willingness to admit it wasn't working could begin to seek and find a better way.

And yet, here I am again this morning bemoaning injustice; contemplating, for instance, the many ways in which lives appear to be randomly plucked from this world for no apparent reason. And wondering again how to answer the question of why when it comes to the subject of physical and emotional suffering. Culminating in death as it inevitably does for every embodied one of us who first get to witness its seeming brutality in those we love and finally confront for ourselves.

I suppose I found myself once more seduced into believing the ego's world could offer any sane answers based, as it is, on the insane idea of fragmenting invulnerable, perfect wholeness. The "tiny mad idea" A Course in Miracles tells us the one child of God took seriously at the very beginning thereby seemingly fracturing invulnerable oneness and propelling itself into an entire hallucinated universe of forms competing for their very survival. Programmed to sooner or later self-destruct to prove they existed at God's expense in the first place but completely unconscious of that original belief. I mean, really?

And yet, in grappling with the sudden death of a healthy, young person close to someone I love this past week, struggling to console the seemingly inconsolable; I discovered....

~*MEDITATION*~

Leap of Faith

I think that the course tells us to meditate. It never really demands that we do anything in a particular way, but I think that Jesus hints over and over that it might be a good idea to pick up a meditation practice. If you look at most of the lessons, the suggested practice involves completely clearing the mind and being still. That is exactly what meditation is.

I mention this because my meditation practice has become a foundation in my life. I would say that I am addicted to it. The word "addiction" beings up some negative connotations but I think it's the best addiction I could have. I started over two years ago and had a lot of trouble getting what it was all about at first. I questioned everything I was doing; the time of day, sitting position, the amount and types of thoughts, whether I was going "deep" enough or not. After a while I relaxed and settled into the practice I do now which is 30 minutes, first thing in the morning, and another 30 minutes some other time during the day, usually always before dinner.

I sit in whatever position is comfortable. I am not very physically flexible so I don't sit in any of the graceful, cross-legged positions. I sit how I would sit in any chair any other time. I close my eyes and let the game begin. That game is seeing how long I can go in between thoughts. The ultimate goal of the game is not to have a single thought the entire time. I tend to go 5 seconds to 10 minutes without having a thought it seems and then I will catch myself thinking about things from the most mundane to the most bizarre. And that is all there is to it. At first I had to force myself to stick to this practice and now I literally refuse to miss a session. One thing that encouraged me in the beginning was the idea that every time you meditate, you get a little better, become a little more whole, and become a little closer to knowing God.

The reason I stick to this practice so rigidly is because .....

Spring's Awakening
By Marc R. Boulais*

 Spring's Awakening

May the first breeze of Spring

Touch your heart and caress your face

With a gentle tease of the beauty of the

Felt, but unseen glance of God's benevolent love.

As the seasons change and you behold

The oneness in Nature's rhythm, be

Thankful as the Spring's tulips, who

Stretch their necks heavenward in praise

And thanks for their short span of glory.

Take time to feel the warmth of

The Sun who spreads his blanket of heat

On all with non-judgment and impartiality;

To melt the hearts of those frozen in

The icy grip of self-concern.

As the setting sun appears to rest,

Do the same with your quiver of fears,

Releasing them into the hands of God;

To disburse as meteors in

A blaze of night light mystery.

Having been raised Roman Catholic, it is clear that his short story "Deep Waters" which was recently presented on ACIM Gather Radio, includes imagery and references that reflect his strong Christian background. But Marc is also a student of other disciplines. He studies A Course in Miracles, the works of Joseph Campbell, the teachings of native American Indian Fools Crow, as well as the poetic writings of Rumi and Lao-Tzu, to name a few. According to Marc, all spokes of the wheel lead to the center and that center is God.

Carmen's Good Questions
Q & A
~
By Carmen Cameron*

Carmen Cameron

QUESTION: .I know that, as a spiritual person, I'm not supposed to be into things but the Course says that the Holy Spirit knows that I need things while I am here just to survive until I learn to go beyond this level of existence.  Things are really tight for me right now and it's becoming a big distraction to my spiritual progress.  Any ideas?

ANSWER:  Have you ever heard about "The Higher Shopping Service"?

It's a service Jesus offered Helen and Bill and it's available to ALL of us. (And I've found it to be downright miraculous since living on such a mini budget these last few years so it would be helpful to you, too, while you're kinda' short. :-)

Jesus says he'll help find the things he knows we need - along with "a reasonable amount of whims", as well (his words, not mine) - AT THE PRICE THAT WE CAN AFFORD so that a) he can prove to us that he exists and hasn't left us (as he promised), and b) to save us time dealing with the worry and frustrations so we can spend more time in doing what we're here to learn to do (just extend the love of God to each other :-).

Using THSS always results in a win-win outcome, miraculously.  Using it proves to us that we're not alone and we're being heard and cared for.  And eventually, it makes us feel so safe and secure that very little can shake our peace, distracting us from loving life.  And each other.

It's really cool!  I've had things I need just show up (often left right on my doorstep).  I've had a gazillion experiences of finding the perfect thing at the unbelievably low price I could afford (comfortably)!  And I'm far from being alone in learning that THSS is not only real, it's DEPENDABLE.  (And fun - 'cuz you just never know HOW that perfect item will turn up, and it's often in such a way that telling the story almost sounds like fiction! lol )

Over the years since learning of THSS, our group has extended it to a broader "reach" into:
- the higher relationship counseling service
- the higher career counseling service
- the higher whatever-you-need-in-the-moment service.

Maybe you're in the place to need THSS just because it's time for you to learn how safe you are (if you already haven't, that is ;-)

Loving you, sweet child of God.  You are beloved!

Guidance on the Forgotten Song

Guiding LightTRANSCRIBER'S NOTE:

[Words from A Course in Miracles-original edition are in Bold.]

~*~

Listen, and try to think if you remember what we will speak of now.  Listen.  Let Us go together, beyond trying.  Let Us, together, slow down the ego mind in its frantic efforts to secure its safety - and remember, its safety is not Yours.  Yours is your Love, the experience spoken of here, that is so beautiful and so very far beyond the ego's ken of selfishness as saviour.

Allow the stillness to flow through Your mind; and Your mind it is, despite the eons of ego domination, Your dominion remains, waiting to be exercised. ... ... ...

If You have yet to realize this, let Us take some moments - truly some Holy Instants - to think of it now together.  What am I asking You to remember but an eternal state of Freedom that has always been Yours, and always will be.  And yet this Freedom is not found in doing as You please, exercising Your 'rights' and trampling Others.  Nothing could be further from the Truth than that.  Yet that is how the ego operates: its only goal is me, me, me.  Those are the lyrics and the metre of its song.

That selfishness is not the song We're listening for.
So, again, I ask You: Clear Your mind of the incessant ego wants and fears, its ceaseless demanding of its dominance.  Just lay them gently to the side.  It will be easy enough to pick them up again, if You so desire.  And always it is My intention to free You from Your self-imposed imprisonment.

And now, together, You and I, We will: Listen, not so much for words at first, but rather for a feeling, a sense that all is Peace, a Peace that passes all the understanding of the dream in which You are busily immersed.  And as You listen for that Peace -- perhaps you catch a hint of an ancient state not quite forgotten; not so much forgotten, but ignored and, therefore,  so unused that You had completely forgotten Its existence.  It is dim, perhaps, and yet not altogether unfamiliar, - since Its Harmony is the nature of Your Be-ing, and yet It is - like a song whose name is long forgotten, and the circumstances in which you heard completely unremembered.  And why is this?

You had to hide It from Yourself or the dream could never...
