The Course in Miracles Society is wishing everyONE a HAPPY New Year as we send out the very first Newsletter of 2011! May it be a year filled with Miracles. ♥

As I was putting these Articles together I was stunned at the synchronicity. Every single message echoes the same Guidance, in different syntaxes. It is the Guidance of a Holy Resolution to step back and let Him lead the Way.

Sheryl Valentine, who graced our Newsletter last May with her exquisite article, "Let Peace Be Your Umpire" has honored and blessed the Course in Miracles Society [CIMS] with another Spirit filled article for our JANUARY Newsletter: "What Will the New Year Hold?".

We also have another intriging GAFF article "GAFF Helps With Priscilla's Lesson" as we start a NEW Lesson series. This article is the first in the new series of articles written specifically for our Newsletter by Dr. Lorena Peter who is also the author of the book  "Gaff: Wisdom from the Sea". Lorena is also introducing an AUDIO link of the article for the very first time!

We have a brand NEW segment starting this month as well with an article submitted by one of our younger CIMS members, Daniel Tipton. Daniel is an active member of the CIMS Omaha contingent, has recently signed onto the CMC ministerial program and will be attending the CMC Annual 2011 Conference in February. Our newsletter this month presents the first article in his series "Dare to be Happy".

Our poem selection this month is actually the back flap synopsis to "The Final Step" written by J. Michaels. This is the ninth and final volume in the series "Musings of the Mind". A longtime ACIM student and lifelong student of the human mind and spirit, J. Michaels has authored books in non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. You may enjoy a review of his novella, "Treasure's of the Mind".

CIMS member Carmen Cameron continues her ongoing Carmen's Good Questions section this month with a question we may all be asking:

QUESTION: "Does the Course give us any ideas about setting a New Year's Resolution?"  [Indeed! Check out Carmen's ANSWER ;-]

And finally, we have Guidance from our Elder Brother as received and scribed by Sun~Rose. This article offers Guidance titled Blessed Resolution and speaks on the ultimate decision "I Will Make No Decisions By Myself".

The commentary on the 53 Miracle Principles, as these principles appear in the original edition [oe] published by CIMS, and in previous CIM newsletters, is now available in a book by Sun~Rose entitled: "YOU ARE LOVED AND SAFE:Prep Notes for Experiencing God's Love".

!!!ANNOUNCEMENT!!

All through 2011, CIMS will present the SonShipRadio daily broadcasts from the Original Edition, Text and Workbook, in the German language. The broadcasts are in synch with our year's
study schedule.

Happy New Year Fractal

What Will the New Year Hold
 by Dr. Sheryl Valentine*

The New Year will hold the same as years past without an intervention in the present.  Standing on the threshold of yet another New Year, I am reminded of these words by Louise Fletcher:

I wish there were some wonderful place

called the Land of Beginning Again,

where all our mistakes and all our heartaches

could be dropped like a shabby old coat at the door,

never to be put on again.

There is such a place as the "Land of Beginning Again." It's called, now.  If you want to know what the future holds, forget about it, and instead look at the thoughts in your mind.  Your thoughts do create your future, and it's being created right now.

I don't know about you, but I've noticed that I have some of the same problems today as I had yesterday, and I recognize that it's because I think the same seemingly innocuous thoughts - thoughts that keep me stuck year-after-year.

I like this analogy:  The mind is like a tree, and the birds that fly into the tree are like thoughts.  It's not necessary to watch the birds that fly in and out of the tree, watch the birds that build a nest.  Which thoughts have built a nest in your mind?  Do you know?

One way to work with this is to begin with an area in your life where you frequently feel frustration, struggle and confusion.  Let's say that it has to do with frustration about lack of money.  As you begin to watch the thoughts in your mind, you will find a nest built of thoughts of lack, limitation and unworthiness.

We think many different thoughts in a day, but through awareness we discover that they fall into a few categories: fear, lack, guilt and unworthiness.  We have thought the same thoughts for so long that we don't even hear them, nevertheless, they continue to create our experiences.

As Love created me, I lack nothing, but when I am mesmerized by the world and let that sight dictate what I want or need, I fall back into the sleep of forgetfulness.  As I slumber, the self I think I am, chatters incessantly about what I should have, do or be, and I continue on with its mission of seek but do not find.

The practice of mind watching can ultimately set you free because it facilitates a new level of awareness, which allows for intervention in the present.  Healing occurs in the present because that's where healing is.  God is in the present.  Holding onto mistakes from the past and worries about the future keep us absent from the present, and thus, absent from the Presence of God.

When absent from the present, the future becomes continuous with the past.  We can learn to pause in today, and recognize that we don't know what tomorrow holds, and so we don't know what we will want or need.  In recognition that I don't know what the New Year holds, I can rest and listen to the Voice that does know.

In A Course in Miracles we are asked to let the thought "I place the future in the Hands of God," rule our mind, and become a habit in our problem-solving repertoire.

Perhaps the habit that is currently in your problem-solving repertoire is something like this, "Oh My God!  What am I going to do?"

Within the feeling of fear you can pause and remember, Ah...I can let go of fear and worry.  I can simply rest in now - in the Presence of Love, and place the future there.

We can make this New Year different by giving everything - every event, circumstance and relationship, the same purpose, that of being used by Holy Spirit to wake us up to the truth that we are free now.

And so, as you go about your life in the ensuing New Year, become willing to seek a future different from the past.  Practice allowing the future to be continuous with now.

Holy Spirit,

Reveal to me a new perception

of myself.

I have been mistaken about who I am,

and now I choose the present to be free.

Today,

I leave the future in your hands,

and leave behind my past mistakes.

Guide me in Your Holy Light.

Amen.

Happy New Year!

"Gaff Helps With Priscilla's Lesson."
Nautilus

Thoughts of an Old Fisherman By Lorena Peter*

Priscilla was sitting in Gaff's spot reading a book when he got there.

Gaff arrived at the beach in the afternoon because he spent the morning doing errands with Julia. He shook his head. Julia and her bridge group! He looked around the beach: this was his bridge group, he thought. As he put out the chair and the flag and the fishing rods, Gaff stole looks at Priscilla, waiting for her to start talking. She was troubled by something and he didn't want to intrude without being asked. He could wait.

Priscilla slid next to him as he greeted Mother Water, dipping his hands into a wave to make the connection with the energy of the planet. He mumbled a prayer of thanksgiving--- for his family and friends and for his own health and happiness. He couldn't imagine being happier. They stood side by side looking out to the horizon, at life sustained by the water of the planet. He glanced at his companion to see her hands empty: no book. The frown was still there, though.

Gaff chuckled as he looked at the tip of his fishing rod to see if he had a nibble. "I was just thinking that I couldn't be happier and you've got that frown."

Another shake of her head. "I just don't get it. I'm doing the lessons in this workbook. There's one for each day-365-- and I've gotten stuck on the very first one." Something in the sand caught her eye and she picked up a shark's tooth. A nod of satisfaction at her good luck. She brushed sand from it.

Gaff grinned. He was used to his friend's hyperbole. The drama made her more interesting, he thought. "What is it that you don't get?"

Priscilla jammed the tooth into her pocket as she stooped to pick up something else. "The book says to keep looking around the room telling ourselves that whatever we see doesn't have meaning."

Gaff wiped hands on pants before fishing mints out of his pocket. He offered one to Priscilla. "Seems pretty straight forward. What don't you get?"

Priscilla held the shell for him to see. "This is a shell and it does have meaning.  We couldn't talk about it if it didn't."

Gaff poked with a finger and then returned his eyes to the water. "Is this the book that teaches how to see things differently?"

A nod, still inspecting the bit of calcium in her hand.

Gaff looked at Mother Water for insight. "Are you asking for help in seeing things differently and refusing to take the first step?"

She grimaced. "The book does say that we don't have to believe for it to work... but I guess I'm resistant."

Silence.

Gaff nodded. "You keep complaining about the problems getting your manuscript accepted by a publishing house."

She shrugged.

He continued, "My hunch is that talking about a shell is a heck of a lot easier than talking about the editors in New York."

Priscilla's head jerked in his direction. "I can talk about them just fine." Her voice was harsh, strident with anger.

"But it would be hard for you to say that what they tell you doesn't have any meaning."

She turned to face him squarely. "Uh hunh. They do have meaning. They determine what I do with my life... and to some extent whether I eat."

"Is that so? And what about your father?"

The red heat of anger was rising in her face. "Oh, yes, he has meaning all right."

Gaff patted her arm and then took the shell out of her hand. "This shell... the only meaning it has is that it is called by the word 'shell.' Other than that, it has no meaning, no associations for you."

Priscilla nodded... and then quickly added. "There's the memory that I found it on the beach here." She took in their surroundings with a wave of her hand.

He held the shell at shoulder level. "I'm going to give it another meaning, then." He thought for a bit.

She watched intently, curiosity etched in two lines between her brows.

Gaff's voice became melodic. He waved his hand over and around the shell several times. "I have given this shell the power to attract love into the life of the person who possesses it." A few more patterns waved over the shell and Gaff handed it with great ceremony to Priscilla.

She looked at the little shell resting in the middle of her palm and started to smile. "Did you do something to this thing? It feels warm in my hand and tingles." Then she closed her fist around it and brought it to rest against her heart, with the other hand on top. Her laugh sounded like tinkling bells. "It feels warm like love itself. Are you a magician?"

Gaff shook his head. "I only gave you the idea that it was magic and you gave it that meaning. I could as easily have said it would bring money or misfortune. And then what would you have felt?"

The corners of her mouth turned down slightly. "So really, the shell only has the meaning that someone gives it. Like you told me it brought love, but I could tell someone that this very same shell brings pain. I feel the love and the person I give it to would feel danger."

Gaff removed his hat to run fingers through his hair as he nodded. Some hair stood on end as he replaced the hat.

She held her hand out flat, with the shell on its palm. "The shell really has no meaning... only the meaning that a person gives it. That I give it... or that you give it."

Another nod... and a smile. Gaff glanced at the tip of his rod. It was jerking and wiggling: sign of a fish on the hook... first of the day.

She moved with him as he tended the lines. "The shell has no meaning... that is, no emotion is attached to it, but what a person gives it."

Gaff grinned as he reeled in a big whiting. He smiled. Whiting is good eating. "This fish is just a fish unless you know how good it tastes coming out of Julia's fry pan."

Priscilla laughed. "Or how much fun it is to reel in."

He took the fish off the hook and held it out for her to admire. "I guess that workbook starts with the shell because it's a lot easier to think that a shell has no meaning than it is that your father has no meaning."

"Or a rejection letter from an editor..."

Gaff laughed. "That workbook must start small to place the hook. Then it reels you in."

Priscilla put the shell into her pocket. "I'm going to keep that shell because you put magic into it. What magic can you put into a rejection letter?"

Gaff opened the cooler and worked the whiting into a place under the ice. "It has no meaning apart from the words on the paper: that he won't publish your book." He dug around for bait in a plastic bag.

His friend's head tilted, listening.

Gaff baited the hook and then cast the line into the surf. "Easier to say what it doesn't mean. It doesn't mean that you won't ever get published. It doesn't mean that you are a horrible failure as a writer. It doesn't mean that the manuscript is bad. It doesn't mean that you won't be on the list of bestselling authors one day. It doesn't mean that you are stupid... It only means that that one editor doesn't want to publish your novel."

Priscilla took her place on the cooler as Gaff plopped into his chair. She stared out to Mother Water to see where Gaff got all this wisdom. "All those other meanings are the ones I gave the letter." She took her book from the sand and brushed it off. "The shell has no meaning for me in and of itself. The ocean has no meaning. The flag has no meaning."

"You got it!"

She turned to look into her friend's eyes. "And yet anyone who knows you, knows those things have great meaning... a meaning that boils down to love."

Gaff smiled out at Mother Water and nodded. "The Way of Love: the source of miracles."

Dare To Be Happy
by Daniel Tipton*

Leap of Faith         Those feelings, those gut feelings are so faint sometimes, it is as if somebody were trying to push you along a road with a feather. I spent three years in a recent relationship ignoring a gut feeling until it was forced to come to a head and I was on my knees asking God to show me the sign that he had already placed at the pit of my stomach long ago. I finally made the choice to end a relationship and I was so proud and exhilarated. I was "free!"

But freedom was scary. I had lurched myself out of my comfort zone. I was disoriented and confused. I had another, different feeling in my stomach that was almost too much to bear. I knew all along that this would hurt but, when it happened, wisdom seemed to find its way into the background. I knew I mustn't confuse my fear of detachment with unhappiness but being fearful sure makes me feel unhappy.

And now it is five months later and my gut was of course right on. I think what I am learning to do is to trust my gut. It's hard to follow the gut when you don't actually trust it. I followed my gut in this case but my distrust of it led to all sorts of suffering. I think this was a big lesson in being able to listen to or feel those feelings; knowing the difference between thought-generated feelings and soul-generated, guided feelings. I am starting to notice that difference.

It is hard to explain but ego feelings seem more loud while those guidance feelings are almost soundless, barely there, easily unnoticed. This is why I am thankful for my meditation practice.  I am more able to tune into the higher frequency vibration of my desires and destiny. I notice now that while I suffered through my detachment, I allowed the ego to take the driver's seat at times. I knew what it would do and what it wanted. I knew that it would never get what it wanted but I let myself be the puppet; sometimes as an experiment and sometimes because I felt like I was in too much pain to care.

The result was always the same and it wasn't long before I grew tired of seeing my experiments or carelessness produce the same results.

I thank God for this lesson in listening. I learned that making a wise choice doesn't always feel comfortable at first. However, we should treat that discomfort as any other meaningless feeling and let the ripples of our decision go out and come back in their own time, carrying with them the conviction of our choice.

The Final Step
BackFlap Synopsis
By J. Michaels*

 The Final Step

The poet ceases. Something has changed.

He has reached his goal but somehow remains undone.

His soul has received as nourishment the odes he writes, yet he cannot rest.

Or might it be possible that rest has now become enduring and no change appears to mind?

Either way, he has been instructed to stop.

Something has been completed even if not him.

He counts the manuscripts upon the shelf.

They are nine in number and the digit feels complete.

The nine play host to more than one thousand of the odes,

each and every one a blessing to be discovered and savored.

The nine are now prepared and ready to be given at spirit's insistence.

The poet must consider the musings done for now.

He must move on to the next thing, to whatever his Guide deems essential.

But what shall he call this ninth child?

Is it an ending or merely a stopover, a brief respite from the work?

The poet knows not but he wishes to know.

He needs to comprehend this final step in this progression
he has been subsumed by for the last two years.

Yet he receives no reply, no answer, no direction except the simplicity of a title.

Call it The Final Step, he is told; nothing more.

It will conclude what must be never concluded for want of a better vision.

But what does it say to me now that I must move on, he queries?

It says nothing more than this:

Forgiveness is my quest
Clarity, my goal
Peace to daily attend me
Love to make me whole

Carmen's Good Questions
Q & A
~
By Carmen Cameron*

Carmen Cameron

QUESTION: Does the Course give us any ideas about setting a New Year's Resolution?

ANSWER:  The Course says that clarifying our goal from the beginning (like at the beginning of a new year) determines the outcome we achieve (T-17.VI.2.3) .It would appear that ACIM actively approves of our making a New Year's Resolution, at least those that are compatible with its principles.  And it even offers us some recommendations for our resolve:

"Accept the holy instant as this year is born,
and take your place,
so long left unfulfilled, in the Great Awakening.
Make this year different, by making it all the SAME.
And let ALL your relationships be made holy FOR you."
Original version of T-15.XI.112

Accepting the Holy Instant and letting our relationships be made holy for us are both statements that are clear and easily understood.  The third suggestion, however, about making this year different from all others by making everything the same requires a little more thought and consideration.  It took me years of study (yes, I am that slow) to understand what it means (at least, a meaning that works for me).

There is a section that deals with sameness that I think helps make its meaning clear:

But in this world, there are no simple facts
because what is the same and what is different
remain unclear.
The one essential thing to make a choice at all
is this distinction.
And herein lies the difference between the worlds.
In this one, choice is made impossible.
In the real world is choosing simplified.

Salvation stops just short of Heaven,
for only perception needs salvation.
Heaven was never lost and so cannot be saved.
Yet who can make a choice between the wish for Heaven
and the wish for hell unless he recognizes
they are not the same?
This difference is the learning goal this course has set.
It will not go beyond this aim. Its only purpose
is to teach what is the same and what is different,
leaving room to make the only choice which can be made.

There is no basis for choice in this complex
and over-complicated world.
For no one understands what is the same
and seems to choose where no choice really is.
The real world is the area of choice made real,
not in the outcome
but in the perception of alternatives for choice.
That there is choice is an illusion.
Yet within this one lies the undoing of every illusion,
not excepting this.

Is not this like your special function,
where the separation is undone by change of purpose
in what once was specialness and now is union?
All illusions are but one. And in the recognition this is so
lies the ability to give up all attempts
to choose between them and to make them different.
[How simple is the choice between two things
so clearly unalike.]
original version of T-26.III.21-24

Only perception needs salvation because Heaven was never lost.  And how do we stabilize our false perceptions?  We can't.  But we can allow for a new perception - a perception based on truth.  A perception that makes way for truth.  The truth of our UNPERCEIVED YET ENTIRELY REAL unity as aspects of the completed picture of God's Son:

Joining with Him in seeing is the way in which
you learn to share with Him
the interpretation of perception that leads to knowledge.
You cannot see alone. Sharing perception with Him
Whom God has given you
teaches you how to recognize what you see.
It is the recognition that nothing you see
means anything alone.
Seeing with Him will show you that all meaning,
including yours,
comes not from double vision but from the gentle fusing
of everything into one meaning, one emotion,
and one purpose.
original version of T-14.IV.30-31

And how do we allow for that fusion to happen?  The best answer to that, in my opinion, is by doing the ACIM Workbook, allowing it to make us question ALL that we believe is true - especially in those early "undoing" lessons - in order to create a space in our unstable and conflicted minds for the Holy Spirit to fill with His higher truth.  And, in order to do that - as I pointed out about the Workbook last month - we must resist the seemingly overwhelming "need" to let that newly cleared space to be filled in by any other voice than HIS!

Allow the meaning of everything you see to be gently released from whatever it was that you ascribed to it before and let the Holy Spirit show you the only meaning that He ascribes to EVERYTHING: the healing of God's Son.

Blessed Resolution

Today I Will Make No Decisions by Myself
As Received and Transcribed by Sun~Rose*
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Sun Rise AboveTRANSCRIBER'S NOTE:

Last night, when Our dear Brother asked Reja to layout and send the page of Guidance, I wondered why.

As it arrives, it is clear.  The glorious sun lighting Our way above and regardless of the clouds of the dream, are the gift of giving. We give Jesus Our gift of the Holy Instant as We give Our sincere - even if still not quite perfect - willingness of:

Today I will make no decisions by Myself.

Although We may 'forget' at first, as We willingly work to give Him this Gift, He returns It to Us ~ each Perfect Moment of Holy Instants following another, as We steadily find a Peace and Joy with Him. This is, indeed, not just "the Peace of God that passes all understanding" (Philippians 4:7) but Happiness too.  This is a living Joy that permeates Our lives blessing All!

What We give to Him is returned to Us "seventy times seven"!

In His Bible words from Matthew 18, We see the blessing of sharing with Him Our decisions to be made:

"And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them ... Whosoever therefore shall humble yourself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven."

As We ask for His help, which is reward enough, We're freely given Heaven!

A Blessed New Year's Resolution

You are asking if I might say something specific for the New Year, and so I will.

The New Year is always fragrant with promise of a new beginning, renewal; this is the year in which everything can change.  And this is true.  This is the year in which You and Your world may be transformed.  Yet You need not wait a moment more to see Yourself and world anew.  And even if it doesn't happen, hasn't happened yet, there is no magic about the beginning of a year that isn't always present for Your transformation.  It's just that little shift, the little willingness I ask of You each and every moment of the year.  When You give Me that no miracle will be left undone.  This is all I ask for: the little willingness that then unfolds so naturally into making no decisions by Yourself.

The ego mindset finds so very many reasons to eschew My participation: "It's not that important."  "I don't need Guidance for this."  "What if I don't like what He says?" And yet, is what You choose on Your own that important?  The very fact of the aloneness of the decision negates all value that it seems to have.  And when We choose together every decision is right.

So if there is a New Year's resolution to be made, then it is this: Today I will make no decisions by Myself.

Guidance ~ Today I will make no decisions by Myself.

Today, I will make all decisions by My True Self, the Holy Spirit.  We could stop there for this is the only goal, the reuniting of the mind with God, the only Self there is, the You as all your perfection and beauty; You as God, Our Father knows You, as He knows Me. (as so does He know Me.)

When You accept this lesson: Today I will make no decisions by Myself, then do You accept the You that is belovèd to God as I am.  And so He speaks to You to say: "This is My belovèd Son in whom I am well-pleased."  For this is how He knows You dearest one.  The ego is not - and never has been - His view of You.

And so, when You return - and that is literal, for You have turned away from Him - and now will You re-turn again to find the waiting arms of Love embracing You and freedom from the slavery in which the ego sense has held You bound so long.

And all of this comes through these simple words: Today I will make no decisions by Myself.  I will allow My Source to show Me what I truly am, for I have been away so long and I am tired of this journey going nowhere.  Why would I have traded all holy things and every joy of God for this sad and sorry state?

I thought it would be fun to separate, and instead it's been nothing but loneliness for Home, which I have tried to hide through relationships that are not based in Love that includes My Father first and foremost.

Instead I've made a god of other separated Sons and things We've made in Our own sorry likeness, hiding Them from Us as well, for We are in this together.

When You separated, You thought that You could be God upon your own and make decisions on each and every one and thing. And it wasn't true, isn't true, and never will be so.  For how could that be, since every One and every Thing is eternally and beautifully connected as essential parts of one stupendous, glorious Whole.

It is as if the flutist decided He would be conductor, and so He drops His flute and starts to wave His hands about in an attempt to control the orchestra.  And another seeing Him cavort decides to try it too. Then others are distracted, and soon there is a sea of hands waving aimlessly!

Yet Those Who have kept focused only on the Conductor continue on with His most exquisite music.  Their fullness and Their happiness is completely unimpaired by the strange behavior of Their Brothers and Their Sisters.  For the Conductor's movement is Their only priority.

And so it is within the dream, when going it on your own, You have forgotten the essential part You play as the glorious Wholeness of God.  You sing and dance to your own song, glad when your dreaming partners shower some applause on You, thus dignifying Your sorry state.

Would it not be so much more satisfying to stop your silly dreams of being the conductor and pick up your long neglected flute, turn your eyes from the dream and focus back on Him.  You will soon begin to play as if You'd never stopped.

And your Brothers and your Sisters, Who dreamt that They too were conductor, will see your happiness and peace regained for You and soon will follow suit.  And the Orchestra is Whole again, acknowledging Its Conductor as not just the Director but the Source of all the music here and now, forever.

Peace and Happiness are the norm again.

My belovèd Child, You feel My Love for You when You follow the Shepherd's Voice guiding You safely Home.

This Love is ever with You, and now You feel Its comfort once again.  You are safe and so loved.
