TypeTalk: Copy editing and proofreading

Great logos with a secret meaning

Artists have been hiding subliminal and secret messages in their art for centuries and the tradition lives on today in the work of logo designers. Find out what's hidden in the FedEx, Tostitos or Baskin Robbins logo. Some of the messages are more obvious than others, but all of them are clever and revealing. Check it out...

What graffiti taught me about typography

In Alec Julian's misspent youth, he dabbled in graffiti, and it turns out that "despite the whole vandalism thing (a line which let's just say for the sake of argument I never crossed) it was the best typographic education I ever had that I never realized I had." The unlikeliest things can be the most educational in the long term, and sometimes one's path through the fabled 10,000 hours towards expertise takes unexpected detours. Read his account here...

Type Connection: A typographic dating game

Type Connection is an online game that helps users learn how to pair typefaces. Like a conventional dating website, Type Connection presents potential "dates" for well-known, workhorse typefaces. Users are matchmakers. They decide what kind of match to look for by choosing among several strategies for combining typefaces. Cleverly conceived and designed by Aura Seltzer for her MFA thesis project. Go play here...

"I want to thank you for the great workshop last Friday. You dusted off and reinforced all of those typographic rules that I have, and have not, lived by in all my years as a graphic designer."

"Your down-to-earth approach to type made the session breezy and fun, and I couldn't help but visually re-spacing all the headlines I had the time to linger on during my bumper-to-bumper drive back to home. Thanks again for reigniting my spark for type!"

NOTE: In opposition to my constant typographic badgering, you might notice the lack of smart typographic conventions in this emailing, including smart quotes, en and em dashes. This is due to the limitations of the email marketing service currently being used.
