Setting type along a curve is a task most
designers encounter at one time or another.
If you think our state-of-the-art digital
typesetting tools make this as simple as
placing type on a horizontal baseline, think
again! Setting type on a curve creates
spacing and kerning issues that need to be
addressed on line-by-line basis - sometimes
even letter by letter.

Q. I often use ligatures and
alternate characters, but occasionally they
confuse spell checkers, which don't seem to
recognize the individual glyphs that make up
some ligatures and alternate characters. Is

The Cuckoo Bird and the Keyboard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Easily the most maligned key on your
computer's keyboard lies just to the left of
"return" and represents what appear to be
single and double quotation marks. It is a
cuckoo's egg in the designer's nest. It
doesn't belong. Unless we put a finger on the
key's history and purpose, we risk being
cuckolded, in the truest sense of the
word.

Vacation on San Serriffe! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
San Serriffe is an archipelago consisting of
two main islands and a number of smaller
ones. Of the larger islands, the more
northerly (the Caissa Superiore or Upper
Caisse) is roughly round and the more
southerly (the Caissa Inferiore or Lower
Caisse) round but with a promontory extending
south-westwards from the south-east, at
Thirty Point. The two major islands are
separated by the Shoals of Adze, dominated by
Cap Em. The capital, Bodoni, is in the centre
of the Caissa Superiore, and is served by an
international airport. It is linked by fast
highways to the major ports, including Port
