Holy Trinity Parish E-News
Decatur, Ga.

Dear ,

I love the Day of Pentecost.  Whereas the Holy Trinity choir puts on their red robes every Sunday morning, on Pentecost the clergy get to wear red, too.  How fun!  Then, on this day, we'll listen again to that extraordinary story of the first Pentecost from the book of Acts, chapter 2.  And we'll sing some glorious hymns about the Holy Spirit.

I guess that's the main reason I love Pentecost.  It's all about the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church.  Jesus promised his disciples that God would not leave them alone in the world but would send an Advocate, the Holy Spirit.  On Pentecost, God came blowing in on those disciples gathered in Jerusalem with lots of noise, energy and excitement, empowering them for ministry through the Holy Spirit.

So, come to Holy Trinity this Sunday and experience Pentecost.  I have a hunch that if you come expecting an encounter with the Holy Spirit, she might just show up in ways you never imagined.

Who needs Eddie's Attic when you've got Tisdale Hall? ;o)

On Saturday, May 10, at 9 p.m., we'll host a concert in Tisdale Hall for several touring folk singer/songwriters: Teresa Storch, Jason Luckett, and Ashley Wells (Tracy Wells's younger sister).

Admission: $10 (all proceeds go directly to the artists)

We'd love to have some refreshments available that evening for folks - if you'd like to come and are interested in bringing snacks/goodies, please let Tracy Wells know ASAP: wells@htparish.com

About Teresa Storch:
Boston-based singer/songwriter Teresa Storch is constantly moving. Her music has been described as a "bounding folk rock sound... mesmerizing vocal riffs" by Boston's Metronome Magazine and "Vega/Merchant-esque vocals... funky guitar work... fabulously catchy folk-genre'd tunes" by Boston Girl Guide. Her first release 'Muscle Memory' and live shows are gathering her national acclaim.

About Jason Luckett:
Jason Luckett is a singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. His sound is an organic mixture of passion and peace. Influenced by Bob Dylan, Curtis Mayfield, and The Smiths, Luckett's sixth album, Adjusted Expectations, Vol. 1 (of 3), What is Reasonable?, was completed in 2006. Music Connection says about Jason: "He uses his guitar as an accompaniment to his stellar, expressive voice as well as his intriguing love songs and mesmerizing essays... He's a little Sam Cooke, a little Lenny Kravitz, and a little Neil Young... His friendly demeanor and barefoot appearance draws you into the moment and relaxes your guard."

About Ashley Wells:
Ashley Wells is a singer/songwriter from Columbia, S.C. A classically trained musician, her music slides effortlessly between acoustic guitar and jazz piano.  Her voice has been called "angelic," "lilting," "gorgeous and rich," and she has been compared to Norah Jones, Natalie Merchant, Joni Mitchell, and Jewel. In 2007, Ashley attended the prestigious New Song Academy, hosted by NPR's Mountain Stage program, where she was recognized as a stand-out songwriter by industry professionals.

This class is excellent for newcomers, for those who seek baptism, confirmation or reception into the Episcopal Church, and for those who simply want to learn more about the Episcopal Church. With the use of Westerhoff's book, the course is also intended for church members who want to explore Anglican spirituality. Gifts can be mailed to: Episcopal Relief and Development, "Emergency Relief Fund," P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058. (When you give online, you may specify Burma relief and note the name of your parish.)

The situation is extremely urgent. Below is an article from the AFP (Agence France-Presse) with statistics on number of people homeless and the death estimates so far.

Grim fight for survival after Myanmar cyclone

YANGON (AFP) - More than one million homeless in Myanmar were battling to stave off disease and hunger Thursday, but the military government maintained tight limits on foreign assistance six days after a massive cyclone.

With death toll estimates near 100,000 and the clock ticking for those who survived, Myanmar's junta -- long suspicious of the outside world -- came under new pressure to fully open up to help from abroad.

Aid has only [been] trickling in despite warnings that specialists were needed to deliver food and water into disaster zones strewn with rotting bodies, and it was unclear if the regime had yet given visas to foreign aid staff...

5/18 - Susan Werner concert at All Saints'

All Saints' Café Night presents singer/songwriter Susan Werner on Sunday, May 18.

Click HERE to see a preview: a video montage of Susan performing last May in Cambridge, Mass.

Susan's new album, "The Gospel Truth," explores the role of the church in American life and speaks in a wide variety of voices, from faithful and traditional to the critical and unconvinced. Susan is one of the leading voices in the folk music genre and has a string of accolades from the likes of the Washington Post, the Village Voice, and NPR. She was recently named Contemporary Artist of the Year for 2008 by the Folk Alliance.

The evening begins with a wine & cheese reception at 6:30 p.m., with the performance beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.allsaintsatlanta.org.

(If you can't make it to All Saints' on the 18th, Susan will also be playing a show at Eddie's Attic in Decatur on Friday, May 16 at 8 p.m. For more information and to buy tickets, see www.eddiesattic.com.)

Note from Tracy Wells: I helped book this gig for Susan (I also work part-time down at All Saints' as their webmaster). Susan is one of my favorite artists and in addition to being amazingly talented, is also one of the nicest people I've ever met. She is a GREAT entertainer and I would be willing to bet you will LOVE the show if you come!

Volunteers Needed at Holy Comforter

The Church of the Holy Comforter at 737 Woodland Ave. in Atlanta needs volunteers. Holy Comforter ministers to neighbors who are mentally ill, developmentally disabled, sick or elderly.

There is an immediate need for volunteers to:

  • input data for a directory and then produce the directory, and
  • establish and administer a system for registering Friendship Center participants.
  • There's also an outdoor work day planned May 10.

If you can help, call the Rev. Mike Tanner at 404-402-9876 or e-mail him at mtanner@bellsouth.net. To find out more about Holy Comforter, click here.

6/7 - Retreat Day at Convent of St. Helena, Augusta
"Living Beyond Stress and Hurt" is the theme for a retreat Saturday, June 7, at the Episcopal Convent of St. Helena in Augusta.  Retreat leader Sister Vernonica says: "When we feel bewildered and perplexed by the worries of this life, hardly knowing what to do or who to turn to, this is the time to grab our buckets and walk to the well like the young Samaritan woman. (There) we meet Jesus with his gift of living water that will satisfy our needs and wants." Information: 706-798-5201, augustaconvent@comcast.net or www.osh.org

Presiding Bishop's Pentecost Letter

In this season: Pentecost 2008
A Letter to The Episcopal Church

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

As we come to the end of Eastertide and the feast of Pentecost, we shift to an awareness of God present with us in Holy Spirit. The early church marked that gift as inspiration, fire, and language -- the breath of ever-new life and the burning desire for ongoing relationship with God. That gift of Holy Spirit keeps us lively and moving, bears us into new territory and challenges unsought.

In this as in every age, we face issues of identity, vocation, and mission as members of the Body of Christ. Entering the long season of Pentecost brings our focus to how we, too, will follow Jesus inspired by Holy Spirit. I would like to offer a few reminders about identity, vocation, and mission that I shared recently with the people of the Diocese of San Joaquin...
