Holy Trinity Parish E-News
Decatur, Ga.

Dear ,

Kids of all ages at Holy Trinity are preparing for the annual Youth and Children's Sunday celebration, which will take place this Sunday, April 20 at both services.  This is the primary day in the church year when the special gifts of our youth and children are showcased.

At the 8:00 service, children will fill the roles of lector, epistoler, intercessor, and ushers.  This service will also include a joint sermon by Tracy Wells, our communications coordinator, and Justin Yawn, our seminarian.

The 10:30 service, in addition to having young people reading the lessons and the prayers of the people, will include chancel dramas by the youth and by the Rotation Sunday School children.  And what would Youth and Children's Sunday be without our talented musicians? This year, Faith Factory will sing two songs at the 10:30 service, and this time they get to sit in the choir stalls and lead the congregation in singing the Song of Praise.  Several older youth will sing or play instruments.

This Youth and Children's Sunday will be particularly special because of the inclusion of the Rite-13 ceremony at 10:30, which marks the beginning of the transition to adulthood for youth in the Rite-13 class.

The Youth and Children's Sunday celebration will also include the launching of our 2008 Vacation Bible School program.  This year's theme is "Power Lab: Discovering Jesus' Miraculous Power!"  VBS is open to all rising kindergarteners through rising 5th graders, and it's FREE!  Come to our festive VBS display table after either service to register your child!

Minister to Children & Youth

April Trumpet mailed today

Your April issue of Holy Trinity's monthly newsletter, the Trumpet, will be mailed today. We have been having some issues with bulk mail delivery times, so please let me parish office know if you receive your copy after April 25.

If you would prefer to receive your Trumpet by email, as a growing number of HTP parishioners are doing, email Tracy Wells (wells@htparish.com) to sign up. (These folks will receive their Trumpet TODAY, and in COLOR!) This choice is also "greener" (saves paper), as well as saving the parish office time and money!

WORSHIP & THE ARTS

4/24 - Worship Committee Meeting
The worship committee will meet this Thursday at 4 p.m. in the conference room.

4/27 - Spring Rector's Forum

Author Caroline Westerhoff, retired canon for ministry for the Diocese of Atlanta, will be our guest for the spring Rector's Forum on Sunday, April 27. She will speak at 9:15 a.m. in the chapel and preach at both services.

5/1 - Ascension Day Eucharist
This feast day commemorates the reunion of Jesus the Savior with God the Creator. We will celebrate with a special liturgy in the chapel on Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m., with music provided by parishioners Caroline Herring (a nationally touring singer/songwriter), Charles Absher, and Liz Grant Hilton. All are welcome.

4/30,  5/1 - Special Choir Performances for Ascension

The Cathedral Choir of St. Philip and the Canterbury Choir of St. Bart's will present Ralph Vaughan Williams' Mass in G Minor for Double Choirs at two Eucharist services for the Ascension:

  • Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. - Cathedral of St. Philip
5/7 - 5/10 - Icon Workshop
Holy Trinity Parish is offering a class in iconography May 7-10. Students will render the Christ Pantocrator (pictured at right) from the 6th century, which is located in St Catherine's in the Sinai. This is not an art class. You do not need to be a draftsman or a painter to paint, or "write", a beautiful icon. This is a class of prayer. Each class begins with the priest blessing everyone's hands. Work is done mostly in silence with Gregorian chants or other quiet music in the background. At the end of the class the icons will be blessed.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday classes will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday's class from 9 to 3 p.m. Tuition for the class is $150 and includes instruction, prepared boards, brushes, gold leaf and pigments. Registration is due by April 25 and a deposit of $75 is required. You will only need to bring a rag for paint, a bottle for water and a towel to protect your icon.

Instructors Judy Langford and Sandy Kezar (mother of parishioner Hildreth Stafford!) are from Bradenton, Florida. They have taught two classes at Holy Trinity as well as classes in New York, Texas and Florida. Both are established artists with works in both public and private collections.

For more information and registration please call Holy Trinity Parish at 404-377-2622. If you have questions about the class please call or email Sandy Kezar at 813-385-9956 or kzsand7@aol.com.
