Dear ,

My experiences as a parish administrator and as a singer in a church choir the week before Holy Week are remarkably similar.  It is like trying to keep your balance during an earthquake with your feet on opposite sides of the seismic fault.  Half of your attention is on Lent, and the other half focuses on preparing music and bulletins for Easter.  (Yes, even singing the A-word!)

The week before the week before Easter is one of the busiest weeks of the liturgical year for parish choirs and parish offices alike.  But the discipline of honing difficult choral passages or anticipating liturgical needs bears fruit in glorious Easter music and heartfelt worship services.

Without that intentional and often rigorous preparation, we cannot experience the full beauty of Easter music and liturgies.  Not surprisingly, as worshippers more fully participate in the services of Holy Week, far greater is their experience of Easter, too.

I invite you to keep a holy Lent this week before the week before Easter and pray that you plan to immerse yourself fully in Holy Week and the great Triduum, the three days comprising Maundy Thursday through Easter-the three days that changed the world forever.

Bill McKibben Talk & Book Signing Tuesday

Author, educator and environmentalist Bill McKibben will be at Holy Trinity on Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. to give a talk and sign copies of his latest book.

His most recent book is Fight Global Warming Now, telling the story of organizing the largest single environmental action ever in 2007, when citizens from across the country staged a call to action for Congress to address global warming. His new book, The Bill McKibben Reader, containing many of his most powerful essays and articles through the years, is coming out on March 4, 2008.

The evening is sponsored by Georgia Interfaith Power & Light, a faith-based nonprofit seeking to engage faith communities in the stewardship of creation, particularly in the ways we generate and use electrical power, and Georgia Center for the Book.

WORSHIP & THE ARTS

3/15 - Acolyte Training Workshop
in the nave on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. until about noon. This session is especially for those serving regularly at 8:00, because the Palm Sunday and Easter 8:00 services are held in the nave. Also, many of you will "move up" with the next schedule after Easter. However, all current acolytes that would like a refresher and those that can help lead the training are encouraged to attend. This would also be a good chance for those teens and adults that are interested in the acolyte ministry to learn a couple of assignment positions to begin an "on the job" training process. Contact: Tommy Lowndes, 404.630.2347, teel3@aol.com.

3/16 - Palm Sunday
Next Sunday is Palm Sunday! Details below. Note that the 10:30 service will begin EARLY next week, with the palm procession at 10:00 in the Glennwood Academy parking lot.

8 a.m. The Holy Eucharist with blessing of palms and reading of the passion gospel, in the chapel

10:00 a.m. (note early time!) The Liturgy of the Palms will take place in the parking lot of Glennwood Academy, across the street from Holy Trinity. A palm procession led by bagpipes will lead worshippers into the church for The Holy Eucharist with the reading of the passion gospel. A musical reflection will follow the reading.

Sign Up for Maundy Thursday Sacred Watch
A sacred watch (prayer with the reserve sacrament) will be held in the chapel starting immediately after the Maundy Thursday (March 20) Eucharist service and will run through the noontime Good Friday (March 21) service. A sign-up sheet is on the table in the parish office. Sign up to pray in one-hour time periods starting on the hour and half-hour to provide a constant presence throughout the watch period. Security will be provided during the nighttime hours, 9:30 p.m. - 5:30 a.m. Contact John Madajewski, 404.378.4277 or shirleygrace2@bellsouth.net.

Readers Needed for Good Friday Stations of the Cross
We will walk the stations of the cross outside on the plaza at 1 p.m. on Good Friday (immediately following the noon service). We need fourteen readers - please sign up on the sheet in the parish office if you are willing to read. You may sign up for the station of your choice.

3/22 - Baptism at Easter Vigil
The next date for Holy Baptism will be at the Easter Vigil service on Saturday, March 22 at 8 p.m. There will be a baptism workshop for all those participating on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. in the Comer Center.

If you are interested in participating, contact Fr. Allan Sandlin at sandlin@htparish.com.

4/12 - Organ Recital at Spivey Hall
On Sat. April 12 at 3 p.m., there will be a recital at Spivey Hall featuring the four very gifted organ students of Alan Morrison from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Alan grew up at Holy Trinity, was confirmed by Bishop Sims, and feels extremely close ties with his home Church, where his parents are members (Don and Jeannine Morrison). Alan is now head of the organ deptartment at Curtis and is a Curtis Graduate, having earned degrees in organ and the master's degree in piano, chamber music and accompanying. Alan is under management and has played recitals in many parts of the world. For ticket information, contact Spivey Hall at 678-466-4200.

Lenten class offering: Everyday Faith for Men

A friend of mine told me recently over lunch: "On Sunday mornings, I feel connected to God and other people, but I lose sight of things pretty quickly on Monday morning." If you've ever had a thought like that and you are a man, please join us on the Sunday mornings during Lent (Feb. 10 - March 16) for a conversation about faith in our daily lives. We will have an open-ended conversation about different aspects of our lives as men who are Christian. Join Associate Rector Allan Sandlin and a team of lay leaders for the conversation. The class will meet in Trinity House. Please enter by the door on E Ponce de Leon Ave.

OUTREACH

United Thank Offering
Are you remembering to drop coins of gratitude in the UTO box sitting on your desk at work or on the kitchen table? If you haven't picked one up yet, those little boxes are available in the narthex this morning for you to take one home. And while you're visiting the UTO display, take a moment to write a note of thanks on a post-it note and add it to the board. You'll enjoy looking over the thanksgivings already posted on the board. Each Sunday a sampling of these will be included in the prayers of the people, reminding us all to give thanks to God for showers of blessings.

THE CLEAN WATER PROJECT IN HAITI

Holy Trinity is pleased to begin supporting the Clean Water Project in Haiti in cooperation with Food for the Poor, a global relief organization. Thanks to this exciting initiative, 55,000 - 75,000 people in Cap-Haitien and Port au Prince have clean drinking water now. (Formerly, they relied on rainwater collected in open ditches near sewage.)

A similar project for 13 wells in Port de Paix is under construction, scheduled for completion this spring. Funding from Holy Trinity will provide thousands of people, including many children, with clean water.
(One well costs $4,075.) To date over $21,000 has been contributed by Holy Trinity parishioners. Contribution envelopes are available in the narthex. For more information, contact Susan Hunsinger, Millennium Development Goals chairperson or Ed Buckley, Haitian Clean Water Project coordinator, at 404.373.1903.

Bring Food Contributions for DEAM Every Sunday
The Outreach Committee encourages everyone, as a discipline of the Christian life, to bring at least one non-perishable food item for DEAM (Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry) each Sunday.

In January alone, DEAM distributed over 2.5 tons of food to those in need in our community! Food items can be placed in a basket in the library area, and will be brought forward with the other gifts during the worship service. (Sign up in the library area if you would like to serve by bringing the gifts forward during the offertory.)

Please bring food staples (not unusual or exotic foods), and remember healthy and special diets. Please do not bring dented cans or out-of-date (expired) foods. Older DEAM clients sometimes have health problems like diabetes and heart problems so low sodium and low or fat free foods are good. Juices are appropriate, but please, no candy or junk foods. Thanks for sharing and God bless!

3/29 - Decatur Electronics Recycling Day.
Don't throw away those old electrical items such as: cell phones, cameras, personal computers, or even electric weedeaters! Be good stewards of the earth and recycle them at Decatur's spring 2008 electronics recycling event, to be held
Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Decatur High School parking lot (corner of N. McDonough Street and Howard Avenue). We regret that we will NOT be able to accept televisions and microwave ovens. Last fall's event resulted in 66 tons of electronics diverted from the landfill, where they may contaminate soil and water. For additional information, contact Chris Carroll at 404.388.0023.

Electronic Equipment for Recycling:
Desktop computers, Telephones, Mini-towers, Telephony equipment, Laptop computers, Adding machines, Monitors, Calculators, Servers, Typewriters, Workstations, Label makers, Keyboards, Copiers, Mice, Fax machines, Joystick game controllers, Answering machines, Printers, Printer cartridges, Digital cameras , Zip drives, Batteries,  Speakers, PDAs, Pagers, VCRs, Hubs, DVD players, Routers, Cable converter boxes, Scanners, Remote controls, Digital projectors, Stereo equipment UPS units, Radios, Main frames, Portable CD players, Component parts, Portable game players, Cables,

By the Way...

Note from Tracy Wells:
Saw this article on Episcopal Life and wanted to share. Exciting news!! I know most of the Nebraska folks quoted in this article from my year in Omaha last year, and I actually served on a committee of the Omaha Tri-Faith Initiative. There's exciting stuff going on in the Diocese of Nebraska! Also note that there are apparently plans underway to open a national church regional office here in Atlanta!!

Omaha cathedral, Nebraska diocese welcome Church Center regional office

Ecumenical, interfaith relations among emphases; Epting to join work in Midwest

February 25, 2008 [Episcopal News Service] Omaha's Trinity Cathedral and the adjoining offices of the Diocese of Nebraska have provided space for an Episcopal Church Center Regional Office to open later this year with specialization in ecumenical and interfaith relations, and congregational life.

"We are enthusiastic about the many opportunities that having an office in the heartland will offer," said Linda E. Watt, the Episcopal Church's chief operating officer.

"Our goal in opening the regional offices is to connect our staff directly with Episcopalians around the country, in order to enhance the communication about, and cohesion of, our various ministries," Watt said.

Bishop C. Christopher Epting, the Presiding Bishop's deputy for ecumenical and interfaith relations, will continue in this capacity and relocate to the Midwest. Epting was previously bishop of the Diocese of Iowa.

Omaha's Tri-Faith Initiative -- a partnership of the Omaha's Temple Israel, the American Institute of Islamic Studies, and the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska -- offers a unique resource to the Episcopal Church's interfaith work, said Anderson, who noted that the three entities are exploring a plan to co-locate houses of worship on an interfaith campus.

The Omaha site joins the Church Center's new configuration of five regional offices, including Los Angeles and Washington D.C. Arrangements to finalize two additional offices in Atlanta and Seattle continue.

Opened on January 2, the Los Angeles office is located at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue. The Washington office -- the site for some 25 years of the Episcopal Church's Office of Government Relations --  is located on Capitol Hill at 110 Maryland Avenue, N.E.

Introduced as part of the ongoing reorganization of the Episcopal Church Center staff, the regional offices continue to complement work based in New York City at 815 Second Avenue.
