Dear ,

TRUMPET news!

The March issue of the Trumpet (our monthly hard-copy newsletter) will go out next Friday, March 7. (The issue is early this month due to the need for it to arrive before Holy Week and Easter.) The March issue will include the parish calendar for April, so if you have dates you need to get on the parish calendar for April, please contact Sarah Christian (christian@htparish.com) by Monday. Also, if you want to run an announcement on any events coming up in April, please email them to me (wells@htparish.com) by Monday.

Secondly, starting next week, the Trumpet will be available ELECTRONICALLY! Help us save paper, postage, and be good stewards of the earth by signing up to receive your Trumpet online. Instead of receiving a hard copy of the Trumpet in the U.S. mail, you will receive an email next Friday with a link where you can download a PDF of the Trumpet (in COLOR!) from our website. We have been having some problems with folks not receiving their Trumpets until two weeks or more after we mail them out, so this will solve that problem as well - you will get your Trumpet immediately on the day it is mailed. If you would like to receive the Trumpet via email instead of print, please email me at wells@htparish.com.

As always, thanks for reading! :O)

New Faith in Life Class Begins This Sunday
The spring Faith and Life class begins this Sunday, March 2 at 9:15 a.m. in the Gaylord Room. The class will use John Westerhoff's book,Living Faithfully as a Prayer Book People, as a resource to explore life centered around the Book of Common Prayer. This class is excellent for newcomers, for those who seek baptism, confirmation or reception into the Episcopal Church, and for those who simply want to learn more about the Episcopal Church. With the use of Westerhoff's book, the course is also intended for church members who want to explore Anglican spirituality. Contact Father Deneke for more information at deneke@htparish.com or 404.377.2622.

Soldiers of Conscience Screening This Sunday!
This Sunday evening, March 2, at 7 p.m., we will have the opportunity to see a new award-winning film entitled Soldiers of Conscience (www.socfilm.com). The film's website describes it as follows:

"From West Point grads to drill sergeants, from Abu Ghraib interrogators to low ranking reservist-mechanics; soldiers in the US Army today reveal their deepest moral concerns about what they are asked to do in war. Their message:  every soldier wrestles with his conscience over killing.  Although most decide to kill, some refuse.  Soldiers of Conscience reveals that far more soldiers refuse to kill than we might expect."

The Lenten series that week (Thursday, March 6) will feature a discussion of the film with our guest speakers, the Rev. Dr. Wesley Smith (Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve) and the Rev. Canon Debbie Shew.

WORSHIP & THE ARTS

TOMORROW - St. John Passion at St. Bart's

New Trinity Baroque is happy and proud to invite you to its 10th Anniversary concert at 8 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, March 1) at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church (1790 LaVista Rd NE). They will be performing "St. John Passion," J.S. Bach's great masterpiece, sung in German and performed as Bach might have performed it in Leipzig on Good Friday in 1724 for the first time, and later in 1749 - just one year before his death. The performance will feature New Trinity Baroque's incredible vocal soloists, chamber vocal ensemble and orchestra, joined by the Canterbury Choir. Tickets are available on the New Trinity Baroque website at newtrinitybaroque.org.

3/15 - Acolyte Training Workshop

in the nave on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. until about noon. This session is especially for those serving regularly at 8:00, because the Palm Sunday and Easter 8:00 services are held in the nave. Also, many of you will "move up" with the next schedule after Easter. However, all current acolytes that would like a refresher and those that can help lead the training are encouraged to attend. This would also be a good chance for those teens and adults that are interested in the acolyte ministry to learn a couple of assignment positions to begin an "on the job" training process. Contact: Tommy Lowndes, 404.630.2347, teel3@aol.com.

Sign Up for Maundy Thursday Sacred Watch
A sacred watch (prayer with the reserve sacrament) will be held in the chapel starting immediately after the Maundy Thursday (March 20) Eucharist service and will run through the noontime Good Friday (March 21) service. A sign-up sheet is on the table in the parish office. Sign up to pray in one-hour time periods starting on the hour and half-hour to provide a constant presence throughout the watch period. Security will be provided during the nighttime hours, 9:30 p.m. - 5:30 a.m. Contact John Madajewski, 404.378.4277 or shirleygrace2@bellsouth.net.

3/22 - Baptism at Easter Vigil
The next date for Holy Baptism will be at the Easter Vigil service on Saturday, March 22 at 8 p.m.

If you are interested in participating, contact Fr. Allan Sandlin at sandlin@htparish.com.

PARISH LIFE

Daughters of the King Meeting TOMORROW
The DOK will meet tomorrow (Saturday, March 1), at 9:30 a.m. in the Gaylord Room for coffee and light refreshments; followed by the meeting at 10 a.m. We will include prayer, sharing time, and discussion of the book by Barbara Brown Taylor, Home by Another Way (p. 81-103), led by Nancy Boone. All women of the parish are invited and encouraged to attend our meetings and see what Daughters of the King is about! Contact: Joan Kidd, DOK President, 404-294-7384, jjkidd@msn.com, or ShirleyGrace Madajewski, 404-378-4277, shirleygrace2@bellsouth.net.

3/9 - Tea Funds Meeting
A meeting to decide what ministries the proceeds from the English Tea will support will be held in the Gaylord Room next Sunday, March 9 following the 10:30 service. Everyone who worked and supported the tea is invited to attend.

Tea Thank You!
A big thank you to all those who made the English Tea a success: the publicity folks, the ticket sellers and buyers, the food makers, the kitchen helpers, the servers and the teapot bearers, those who set up and those who cleaned up, the models, the designers, the flower arrangers, and anyone else who helped to make the afternoon so lovely for our guests. Next year should be just as much fun!

3/11 - Bill McKibben Talk & Book Signing.
Author, educator and environmentalist Bill McKibben will be at Holy Trinity on Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. to give a talk and sign copies of his latest book.

His most recent book is Fight Global Warming Now, telling the story of organizing the largest single environmental action ever in 2007, when citizens from across the country staged a call to action for Congress to address global warming. His new book, The Bill McKibben Reader, containing many of his most powerful essays and articles through the years, is coming out on March 4, 2008.

The evening is sponsored by Georgia Interfaith Power & Light, a faith-based nonprofit seeking to engage faith communities in the stewardship of creation, particularly in the ways we generate and use electrical power, and Georgia Center for the Book.

3/23 - Easter Breakfast
Plan now to attend our annual Easter breakfast. It will be served in Tisdale Hall from 8 - 9:30 a.m. on Easter Day (March 23). The meal will include fresh fruit, cheese grits, sausage casserole, biscuits, cinnamon rolls and juice. The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children.

3/27 - DATE CHANGE for Seniors in Action trip to Carlos Museum

The visit to the Michael C. Carlos Museum on the Emory campus has been changed to Thursday, March 27. (There was a conflict with the March 13 date and the last night of the Lenten series.) The special museum exhibits at this time include "Lost Kingdoms of the Nile" - Nubian Treasures from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and  "Excavating Egypt." The permanent collection includes objects from Egypt, Greece, Rome, Near East, and ancient Americas. All folks 60 and over are invited to participate in the Seniors in Action.

·    Life In Christ, Comer Center Room 257

Lenten class offering: Everyday Faith for Men
A friend of mine told me recently over lunch: "On Sunday mornings, I feel connected to God and other people, but I lose sight of things pretty quickly on Monday morning." If you've ever had a thought like that and you are a man, please join us on the Sunday mornings during Lent (Feb. 10 - March 16) for a conversation about faith in our daily lives. We will have an open-ended conversation about different aspects of our lives as men who are Christian. Join Associate Rector Allan Sandlin and a team of lay leaders for the conversation. The class will meet in Trinity House. Please enter by the door on E Ponce de Leon Ave.

Lenten Series This Week - Christian Views of War

This Thursday, March 6, as part of our continuing Lenten series on Christian ethics, the Rev. Dr. Wesley Smith and the Rev. Canon Debra Shew will join us for a discussion of Christian views of war (that will tie in with the March 2 screening of Soliders of Conscience at Holy Trinity). The Rev. Dr. Wesley Smith is currently rector of Christ Church, Macon and is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve (Chaplain Corps).  The Rev. Debbie Shew is Canon for Community Ministries in the Diocese of Atlanta. Come for a light supper at 6:30. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. and we will finish by 8:30 p.m. Childcare will be provided.

United Thank Offering
Are you remembering to drop coins of gratitude in the UTO box sitting on your desk at work or on the kitchen table? If you haven't picked one up yet, those little boxes are available in the narthex this morning for you to take one home. And while you're visiting the UTO display, take a moment to write a note of thanks on a post-it note and add it to the board. You'll enjoy looking over the thanksgivings already posted on the board. Each Sunday a sampling of these will be included in the prayers of the people, reminding us all to give thanks to God for showers of blessings.

THE CLEAN WATER PROJECT IN HAITI

Holy Trinity is pleased to begin supporting the Clean Water Project in Haiti in cooperation with Food for the Poor, a global relief organization. Thanks to this exciting initiative, 55,000 - 75,000 people in Cap-Haitien and Port au Prince have clean drinking water now. (Formerly, they relied on rainwater collected in open ditches near sewage.)

A similar project for 13 wells in Port de Paix is under construction, scheduled for completion this spring. Funding from Holy Trinity will provide thousands of people, including many children, with clean water. The vestry has committed over $7000 from the parish Clean Water Fund for this purpose.
(One well costs $4,075.) Additionally, parishioners have given $5000 to date and $1000 has been designated from the parish funds for Millinium Development Goals by the Youth Council, following a vestry request that young people determine where a portion of the funds should go.

Offerings for the project are welcome, as we focus on global outreach in this way during the season of Lent. (Look for special envelopes through March or designate "Clean Water Fund" on your check made payable to Holy Trinity. All donations to the fund through March will be designated to the project. This is in addition to the amounts already committed.)

For more information, contact Ed Buckley at 404.373.1903.

Bring Food Contributions for DEAM Every Sunday
The Outreach Committee encourages everyone, as a discipline of the Christian life, to bring at least one non-perishable food item for DEAM (Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry) each Sunday.

In January alone, DEAM distributed over 2.5 tons of food to those in need in our community! Food items can be placed in a basket in the library area, and will be brought forward with the other gifts during the worship service. (Sign up in the library area if you would like to serve by bringing the gifts forward during the offertory.)

Please bring food staples (not unusual or exotic foods), and remember healthy and special diets. Please do not bring dented cans or out-of-date (expired) foods. Older DEAM clients sometimes have health problems like diabetes and heart problems so low sodium and low or fat free foods are good. Juices are appropriate, but please, no candy or junk foods. Thanks for sharing and God bless!

3/29 - Decatur Electronics Recycling Day.
Don't throw away those old electrical items such as: cell phones, cameras, personal computers, or even electric weedeaters! Be good stewards of the earth and recycle them at Decatur's spring 2008 electronics recycling event, to be held
Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Decatur High School parking lot (corner of N. McDonough Street and Howard Avenue). We regret that we will NOT be able to accept televisions and microwave ovens. Last fall's event resulted in 66 tons of electronics diverted from the landfill, where they may contaminate soil and water. For additional information, contact Chris Carroll at 404.388.0023.

Electronic Equipment for Recycling:
Desktop computers, Telephones, Mini-towers, Telephony equipment, Laptop computers, Adding machines, Monitors, Calculators, Servers, Typewriters, Workstations, Label makers, Keyboards, Copiers, Mice, Fax machines, Joystick game controllers, Answering machines, Printers, Printer cartridges, Digital cameras , Zip drives, Batteries,  Speakers, PDAs, Pagers, VCRs, Hubs, DVD players, Routers, Cable converter boxes, Scanners, Remote controls, Digital projectors, Stereo equipment UPS units, Radios, Main frames, Portable CD players, Component parts, Portable game players, Cables,
GPS receivers, 3-in-1 devices, printer/copier/fax machines.
