WORSHIP & THE ARTS
THIS SUNDAY - The Great Litany This Sunday, the First Sunday in Lent, we will chant the Great Litany at the beginning of the service as our communal prayers, rather than the Prayers of the People later in the service. The Great Litany was the first English language rite, prepared by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer and first published in 1544. For more information about the Great Litany and its history, see this entry on the national church's website.
And check out this video on YouTube of the Great Litany, posted by a parish in Massachusetts.

ADULT CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Sunday Morning Class Offerings Class offerings are posted on the bulletin board on the second floor as well as in the Adult Christian Formation section of the HTP website. All classes meet at 9:15 a.m. A new Newcomer's Class will begin Jan. 27. Current classes are: · The Bible: Echoes and Mirrors, Comer Center Commons · Life In Christ, Comer Center Room 257 · Newcomer's Class, Gaylord Room · Everyday Faith for Men, Trinity House
New Class - Everyday Faith for Men BEGINS SUNDAY A friend of mine told me recently over lunch: "On Sunday mornings, I feel connected to God and other people, but I lose sight of things pretty quickly on Monday morning." If you've ever had a thought like that and you are a man, please join us on the Sunday mornings during Lent (Feb. 10 - March 16) for a conversation about faith in our daily lives. We will have an open-ended conversation about different aspects of our lives as men who are Christian. Join Associate Rector Allan Sandlin and a team of lay leaders for the conversation. The class will meet in Trinity House. Please enter by the door on E Ponce de Leon Ave.
Lenten Series on Christian Ethics Begins Thursday
On Thursday evenings during the season of Lent, please join us for our "Ethics after Easter" Lenten Series. Last year, we focused on the Creed and asked the question, "What do we believe?" This year, we turn to the question of how we live our lives as Christians.
This Thursday, Feb. 14, we will welcome a good friend back to Holy Trinity Parish-the Rev. Dr. John Westerhoff (pictured). Dr. Westerhoff needs little introduction in this place. Retired professor of theology and Christian nurture at Duke Univesity and most recently, professor of theological ethics and moral theology at the General Theological Seminary, his newest book is entitled Living Faithfully as a Prayer Book People.
Come for a light supper at 6:30 p.m. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. and we will finish by 8:30 p.m. Childcare will be provided.
Soldiers of Conscience Screening March 2
On Sunday evening, March 2, at 7 p.m., we will have the opportunity to see a new award-winning film entitled Soldiers of Conscience (www.socfilm.com). The film's website describes it as follows:
"From West Point grads to drill sergeants, from Abu Ghraib interrogators to low ranking reservist-mechanics; soldiers in the US Army today reveal their deepest moral concerns about what they are asked to do in war. Their message: every soldier wrestles with his conscience over killing. Although most decide to kill, some refuse. Soldiers of Conscience reveals that far more soldiers refuse to kill than we might expect."
The Lenten series that week (Thursday, March 6) will feature a discussion of the film with our guest speakers, the Rev. Dr. Wesley Smith (Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve) and the Rev. Canon Debbie Shew.

OUTREACH
This Sunday - Clean Water Fund Presentation.
This Sunday parishioner Ed Buckley will address both congregations regarding a clean water in Haiti that he is helping to sponsor through Food for the Poor, a global relief organization. The vestry has committed close to $5,700 from the parish Clean Water Fund for this purpose. Additional gifts are sought during the Lenten season so that the current phase of the Port de Paix project may be completed this spring. Offering envelopes for this purpose are in this bulletin. Please mark Clean Water Fund on your check to Holy Trinity. All donations to the fund through March will be designated to the project. This is in addition to the $5700 already committed. Next Sunday, Feb. 17, Ed will present a program on the project at 9:15 a.m. in the chapel. All are welcome.
Bring Food Contributions for DEAM Every Sunday
The Outreach Committee encourages everyone, as a discipline of the Christian life, to bring at least one non-perishable food item for DEAM (Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry) each Sunday.
In January alone, DEAM distributed over 2.5 tons of food to those in need in our community! Food items can be placed in a basket in the library area, and will be brought forward with the other gifts during the worship service. (Sign up in the library area if you would like to serve by bringing the gifts forward during the worship service, during the offertory.)
Please bring food staples (not unusual or exotic foods), and remember healthy and special diets. Please do not bring dented cans or out-of-date (expired) foods. Older DEAM clients sometimes have health problems like diabetes and heart problems so low sodium and low or fat free foods are good. Juices are appropriate, but please, no candy or junk foods. Thanks for sharing and God bless!
Look for UTO Display This Sunday
Holy Trinity will be expanding the circle of thankful people when we begin participating in the United Thank Offering. Please look for the UTO display on Sunday, Feb. 10. You will be able to pick up supplies (a blue offering box!), and contribute a thankful thought. Our spring ingathering will be at Pentecost.
Honduras Trip Meeting Next Sunday! Our weeklong trip to the Agalta Valley of Honduras is scheduled for July 26 - August 2. We will hold a meeting in the Comer Center next Sunday, Feb. 17 after the 10:30 service for those who are interested in going. We need a firm commitment next Sunday for those who want to go! In the weeks following the meeting a deposit will be necessary to secure your spot. Contact: Charles Absher, cabsher@comcast.net, 678-333-0149.

Tornado-affected areas receive ERD outreach Feb. 7, 2008
[Episcopal News Service] Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is reaching out to communities affected by the violent tornadoes that tore across the southern United States of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee on Feb. 5, leaving more than 50 people dead -- the highest death toll caused by tornadoes in a 24-hour period since 1999.
The storms spawned a cluster of killer tornadoes, along with hail and heavy snow that injured at least 100 people across the five states and reduced homes, schools and businesses to rubble. "Stunned residents report unimaginable devastation in their communities," an ERD release said.
ERD has contacted several of the affected dioceses and is reaching out to others. Assessments are underway to determine critical needs. "ERD stands ready to respond, and offers prayers of support to all who are suffering as a result of the tornadoes," the release said.
To make a donation, visit ERD's website here and click on "Emergency Relief" or call 1-800-334-7626, ext. 5129.
Gifts can be mailed to: Episcopal Relief and Development "Emergency Relief Fund" P.O. Box 7058 Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.
