Dear ,

Lent is fast approaching this year, and I would like to share with you all a quote from Thomas R. Kelly in his book entitled "A Testament of Devotion."  Kelly writes, "an adequate life might be described as a life which has grasped intuitively the whole nature of things, and has seen and felt and refocused itself to this whole."  I believe this quote embodies one overlooked aspect of Lent.  Along with our penitent actions of "giving something up," let us all remember that we can also take this time to add a component to our lives. We can accomplish this through many different practices, such as a daily devotion or a spiritual overhaul.  As we look forward to this Lenten season, I challenge everyone to spend some time challenging their faith, and in the end, we will all have a better view of the "whole" which Thomas Kelly is mentioning.

New Class - Everyday Faith for Men
A friend of mine told me recently over lunch: "On Sunday mornings, I feel connected to God and other people, but I lose sight of things pretty quickly on Monday morning." If you've ever had a thought like that and you are a man, please join us on the Sunday mornings during Lent (Feb. 10 - March 16) for a conversation about faith in our daily lives. We will have an open-ended conversation about different aspects of our lives as men who are Christian. Join Associate Rector Allan Sandlin and a team of lay leaders for the conversation. The class will meet in Trinity House. Please enter by the door on E Ponce de Leon Ave.

THURSDAY Night Lenten Series on Christian Ethics
Last Lent, we considered the question "what do we believe?" On Thursday nights (note day change) in Lent this year, we will turn to the question of how we live our lives as Christians. The title of the series this year, "Ethics After Easter," is borrowed from the Rev. Dr. Stephen Holmgren's book by that title.  Even as we walk with Christ through this season of Lent, we are reminded that our faith is an Easter faith. As Fr. Holmgren writes: "That is why Christian ethics may also be called 'ethics after Easter.'" We have an exciting line-up of guest speakers. Dinners begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program. After each presentation, there will be time for responses. We will finish by 8:30 p.m. Child care will be provided. The series begins on Thursday, Feb. 14 and runs through Thursday, March 13.

Soldiers of Conscience Screening March 2
On Sunday evening, March 2, at 7 p.m., we will have the opportunity to see a new award-winning film entitled Soldiers of Conscience (www.socfilm.com). The Lenten series that week (Thursday, March 6) will feature a discussion of the film with our guest speakers, the Rev. Dr. Wesley Smith (Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve) and the Rev. Canon Debbie Shew.

OUTREACH

Food Contributions for DEAM.
The Outreach Committee encourages everyone, as a discipline of the Christian life, to bring at least one non-perishable food item for DEAM each Sunday to worship. Food items can be placed in a basket in the library area, and will be brought forward with the other gifts during the worship service. Please bring food staples (not unusual or exotic foods), and remember healthy and special diets. Older DEAM clients sometimes have health problems like diabetes and heart problems so low sodium and low or fat free foods are good. Juices are also great, but please, no candy or junk foods. DEAM distributed over 2.5 tons of food in January alone. Thanks for sharing and God bless!

Look for UTO Display Next Sunday.
Holy Trinity will be expanding the circle of thankful people when we begin participating in the United Thank Offering. Please look for the UTO display on Sunday, Feb. 10.  You will be able to pick up supplies (a blue offering box!), and contribute a thankful thought. Our spring ingathering will be at Pentecost.

Honduras Trip Meeting Feb. 17

Our weeklong trip to the Agalta Valley of Honduras is scheduled for July 26 - August 2.  We will hold a meeting in the Comer Center on Feb. 17 after the 10:30 service for those who are interested in going. We need a firm commitment on that day for those who want to go.  In the weeks following the meeting a deposit will be necessary to secure your spot.  Contact: Charles Absher, cabsher@comcast.net, 678-333-0149.

Hunger Walk Coming Up on March 2
It's time to start getting ready for the 2008 Atlanta Community Food Bank Hunger Walk / Run. The date is March 2, at Turner Field. The walk begins at 2:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 12:00 p.m. One of the groups that benefits from the walk is Episcopal Charities.

By the Way...

A note from Stuart Higginbotham

January 10, 2008
The Feast of William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1645

To our dear family at Holy Trinity,

I hope this letter finds you doing well. I wanted to write and thank you for your presence, hugs, laughs, and prayers during my ordination service on December 21. That day is one which will forever be a marker in my life, orienting me both to service and prayer as well as to gratitude for the prayers and encouragement of such a wonderful parish family. What a gift we share in Holy Trinity!

I thought it was profound that the day of the ordination fell on the Feast of St. Thomas the Apostle. "Doubting" Thomas has seemed a fit companion at some points of this journey, winding through the Presbyterian Church to find my spiritual home in the Episcopal Church, discernment, postulancy, and candidacy... There were many points along the way that prompted some doubting, but all in all, God has had a way of strangely and beautifully prodding and guiding. If I ever wonder how grace works, I only have to look at this journey toward ordination!

Lisa, Evelyn and I look forward to being with you soon. Please know how thankful we are for you. Here's to what God has up her sleeve for all of us!

Journey well,

Stuart
