Dear ,

Strictly speaking, Mardi Gras - also known as "Fat Tuesday," "Shrove Tuesday," and "Pancake Tuesday" - is the last day before Ash Wednesday.  According to History.com, Mardi Gras was first celebrated in the Americas on March 3, 1699, near modern-day New Orleans.  In the years since 1699, many have come to celebrate the seven days culminating in Mardi Gras as a time for dancing, celebrating, eating, and drinking with abandon before the reflective, penitent days of Lent.

Mardi Gras can be employed in the service of Lent, and this brings us to Mardi Gras Ball 2008, to be celebrated here at Holy Trinity.  Let us begin these last 17 days before Lent by gathering together to eat, drink, dance, and joyously celebrate our communion of faith and our great good fortune in being Christians together in this warm-hearted community.  There will always be more than enough to seriously ponder, and consider, and to worry about.  Let us take this time God has given us before our great season of Lent and have fun together and laugh together.  We will be strengthened, then, for the journey of Lent which will lead us into the pain of Palm Sunday and on to the joy of Easter.

TOMORROW - MARDI GRAS BALL!

The Top 10 Reasons to Attend the Mardi Gras Ball!
For 6th graders -- adult. The Top Ten reasons for joining your parish family at the Mardi Gras Ball tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Tisdale Hall:

#8 - You have a boa, a feathered mask, or some other cool item of apparel you want to wear
#7 - All the coolest parishioners will be there
#6 - You know Mardi Gras doesn't actually happen until Feb. 5, but you like being part of a new tradition...
#5 - You've heard Father Deneke dances as well as he sings, but you want to see for yourself...
#4 -- You want to kick up your heels before settling in for the 40 days of Lent beginning Feb. 6...
#3 - Your mom is making you go.
#2 - You don't have to worry about having a dance partner because there will be line dances and "follow the leader" dances and all kinds of ways to dance as part of the crowd!
#1 - Episcopalians really know how to prepare for Lent by throwing a huge party just before the 40 days of Lent begin!  Or, you want to help send our youth to Ireland for their pilgrimage.

When:  Tomorrow, January 19, beginning at 6:00 pm.
What:   A rip-roaring fundraiser for the youth pilgrimage to Ireland
Suggested contribution:  $20/adult;  $10/6th graders through 12th graders;  $50/family maximum***

WORSHIP & THE ARTS

Liturgical Ministers Workshop on Sat., Jan. 26
If you have been a chalice bearer, recited prayers of the people and/or read lessons - and would like to continue doing so - please plan to attend a mandatory meeting for such folk: Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the nave. For those 16 years of age or older who would like to participate in such ministries, please attend as well. We will review practices, techniques, troublesome areas and become familiar with the altar and its trappings. If you are unable to attend, please inform Pete Withers (770.923.1803, soniepete52@bellsouth.net) and we'll set up a make-up date.

Adult Choir to Participate in Diocesan MLK Concert

Our adult choir is one of five choirs from throughout the diocese invited to sing at the sixth annual concert in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (pictured left) at the Cathedral of St. Philip on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by the anti-racism commission of the diocese, the program will include composers from Africa and throughout the African diaspora from all time periods and musical styles. Our adult choir will perform two anthems whose texts are poems from the pen of Langston Hughes, a great African American writer and poet of the 20th century. Dr. André Thomas, director of choral activities at Florida State University, has used Hughes' poems to craft two beautiful compositions. Parishioner Jeannine Morrison will accompany the choir. The concert is free, and no tickets are required for admission.

Amati Chamber Music and Friends.
Join us on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. for an afternoon of music for strings beginning with the music of J. S. Bach for solo cello and ending with the grand Sextet in B flat, Op. 18, by Johannes Brahms. Our associate rector, Allan Sandlin, will be playing viola in the Brahms and is delighted to be playing with these excellent young musicians.

New Class - Everyday Faith for Men
A friend of mine told me recently over lunch: "On Sunday mornings, I feel connected to God and other people, but I lose sight of things pretty quickly on Monday morning." If you've ever had a thought like that and you are a man, please join us on the Sunday mornings during Lent (Feb. 10 - March 16) for a conversation about faith in our daily lives. We will have an open-ended conversation about different aspects of our lives as men who are Christian. Join Associate Rector Allan Sandlin and a team of lay leaders for the conversation.

THURSDAY Night Lenten Series on Christian Ethics
Last Lent, we considered the question "what do we believe?" On Thursday nights (note day change) in Lent this year, we will turn to the question of how we live our lives as Christians. The title of the series this year, "Ethics After Easter," is borrowed from the Rev. Dr. Stephen Holmgren's book by that title.  Even as we walk with Christ through this season of Lent, we are reminded that our faith is an Easter faith. As Fr. Holmgren writes: "That is why Christian ethics may also be called 'ethics after Easter.'" We have an exciting line-up of guest speakers. Dinners begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program. After each presentation, there will be time for responses. We will finish by 8:30 p.m. Child care will be provided. The series begins on Thursday, Feb. 14 and runs through Thursday, March 13.

By the Way...

Sign up for Spring Foyers!

What is Foyers?
Groups of six to eight people who meet informally for a simple meal and fellowship at each other's homes.

Who joins Foyers?
People just like you! Both singles and couples - of whatever adult age - are invited to sign up. (And if you think your home is too small, think again - Foyers have met happily in one-room apartments!)

When do Foyers groups meet?
Each group meets monthly starting in February in the home of one of the members of the group. The meeting place and time are decided by the group with each host/ess taking one turn hosting the group.

Why do the groups meet?
Foyer groups get together for two to three hours in a casual social setting to make new friends, to get reacquainted with longtime friends, to share a simple meal, and to simply enjoy being with members of their parish family.

Is there a program?
Absolutely not!! No agendas, no assigned topics, no Bible study, and no projects!

How does it work - exactly?
Just sign up. Sign up sheets are in the office area until Feb. 10. The names are randomly assigned into groups of six to eight people. You'll receive contact information for your group in the mail. Someone in each group is designated as the first "convener."

Each couple hosts one meal; two singles can get together to host one meal (by signing up together or being assigned together by the Foyer chairperson) or a single person may choose to host a meal by himself/herself.

We have two types of foyer groups - traditional and pot-luck - indicate if you have a preference on the sign up sheet. Traditional Foyers: the host/ess provides the entire meal.
Potluck Foyers: The host provides the entrée and others in the group contribute to the meal.

Where do I sign up?
On the table near the library on the third floor.

If you have any questions, please email or call Dick Kephart at dickkephart@netscape.net or 404.235.3454.

Holy Trinity Parish's mission is to open hearts to God and
