Holy Trinity Parish E-News
Decatur, Ga.

Dear ,

This week-end marks the end of a glorious season. Saturday is the 12th day of Christmas and Sunday is the feast of the Epiphany. What we have celebrated in our homes and faith community moves to a larger stage. The hymn Christ for the world we sing makes for a good description of the movement of our celebration from Christmas to Epiphany. Our faith in the incarnation of God in Christ is not a sectarian belief but a universal, catholic affirmation of God's love for the world. Not only is each of us loved but also those not part of the church but no less sacred in the eyes of God. Joy to the world, the Lord is come.

TOMRROW - Epiphany Eve Dinner & Service
Twelfth Night is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "the evening of the fifth of January, preceding Twelfth Day (of Christmas), the eve of the Epiphany... observed as a time of merrymaking." Come make merry with your friends and family at Holy Trinity on Saturday, Jan. 5, beginning at 6 p.m. with a pot-luck supper. At 6:30, we will move to the chapel for a service of lights.  Expect to be welcomed with the music of strings and the light of many candles. Come and celebrate the dawning of the Epiphany. There WILL be nursery care available for this service (from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.).

THIS SUNDAY - Epiphany
This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany at both services (8:00 and 10:30). We will have a kings' cake in the narthex immediately following the 10:30 service. Christian Formation classes will resume this week, at 9:15 a.m. in the Comer Center.

NEXT FRIDAY - Interfaith Shabbat Service at Temple Kehillat Chaim

Holy Trinity has been invited by the rabbi, cantor, and congregation of Temple Kehillat Chaim, a Reform Jewish congregation in Roswell (1145 Green Street), to join with them in an interfaith Shabbat service on Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at 7:30 pm. (Shabbat, the Hebrew word for "sabbath," is the Jewish day of rest, observed from Friday at sundown through Saturday at sundown.) Fr. Deneke will address the congregation on the tenets of our Episcopal faith, and both adult choirs will combine to sing several anthems and lead the singing during the evening liturgy.

Holy Trinity has had a long association with Temple Kehillat Chaim - our Director of Music & Organist Keith Nash has served as their accompanist since 1986. There will be a reception following the service in the social hall. A map with nearby restaurants will be available at the front reception desk.

**CHOIR -- Please note -- we will have a combined rehearsal with the Kehillat choir on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room. There will be no choir rehearsal on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

For more on Shabbat:

Judaism 101 (Note: This site is written from an Orthodox perspective. Orthodox Jews are generally more religiously conservative/strictly observant. The congregation we will be partnering with is a Reform congregation. Reform Jews have varying degrees to which they observe the Sabbath prohibitions against work. See the Wikipedia article for more on this. "Orthodox" and "Reform" are two different types of Judaism, much as we have different denominations (Episcopal, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc) within Christianity.)
