Greetings!
This summer Pearson Education Publishing put in place our Iron90 Workplace Wellness Program. Pearson's leadership in the publishing industry is due in large part to it's 34,000 innovative and committed people. Annette Holmes is one of these people. She has a full-time career, is a mother, a wife and at age 44 she has become a catalyst for change.
Change requires motivation.
Motivation requires inspiration, and
Inspiration is the catalyst of change.
Over the last 4 months, Annette's colleagues, family and friends have witnessed her grow older, stronger, leaner and faster. This is not a normal trend, but then a catalyst is not a normal event.
Through her commitment to her Iron90 plan, Annette has changed herself, reversed the effects of aging and has become the catalyst that has inspired others to change (read below).
Congratulations Annette Holmes our November 2009 Ironbody of the Month!
We are grateful for your commitment.
Sincerely,
Robert Vera & J.R. Rosania, CSCS

Ironbody of the Month Q & A:
1. Can you explain the difference between the Iron90 Meal Plan and a Diet?
I needed a system that would be easy and unrestrictive. The beauty of the Iron90 system of 6 small meals a day is that truly, I could eat anything I wanted, but I might have to cut it in half, or fourths! Believe me, sometimes a sandwich was cut into 4 parts, and I ate it for my next 4 meals! Not having to prepare special meals was important, because as a working mother and wife, I don't have time to make something different for myself.
In the last 100+ days of following Iron90 I have NEVER felt deprived or even hungry. 2. Can you explain Iron90's training SMARTER vs. HARDER method using a Heart Rate Monitor? I am a fitness professional. I have taught fitness classes for 15 years and yoga classes for 6 years. Despite that I was stuck at a fitness level and weight that was not healthy. Using the heart rate training zones was definitely an eye-opener. I worked out before Iron90- even using a heart rate monitor, but I never understood the object of the training zones. Now it all makes so much sense. The Iron90 training method of staying within certain heart rate zones for your workouts increases cardiovascular fitness and efficiency quickly. My workouts no longer leave me exhausted as they did before. I used to work out every time at my maximum ability - thinking that if I worked as hard as possible that was the best thing to do. It is counterintuitive, but the SMARTER not HARDER method is what really started to peel the pounds off.
In the first month- I was doubtful that the short 30 minute cardio workouts would be effective. I was amazed to see a weight loss of 8 pounds and that weight has STAYED off. Over the last 3.5 months I have lost almost 15% of my total body weight (-15 lbs.). I had been wasting my time for the past 3 years- getting no where! Working SMARTER and not HARDER with my Heart Rate monitor was the key. 3. Can you explain how your became faster, leaner and stronger now than you were last year when the trend is for most people to gain weight and become slower with age?
I am nearly 44 years old. I am not willing to believe that getting older means that I have to be heavier and slower! Using the guidelines provided by Iron90, I have managed to train my eyes and stomach to know what a proper meal portion is for me. When I have overeaten, I have KNOWN it- no need to check any calorie guide. My stomach literally hurts! That helped me become 15 lbs. leaner.
Sticking to the basic resistance exercises has increased my strength. I can do more full push-ups than many men half my age! I am stronger now than I have been in years. 4. Has Iron90 made a difference in your workplace? I have met people at work that I never would have met otherwise. I have encouraged fellow Iron90'ers to come hiking with me. Another Iron90 teammate and I plan on doing the PF Chang's half marathon together in January.
Lots of other co-workers are asking me about the plan I am on, as they have noticed my body shrinking! I recommend Iron90 to everyone. |

Myth: Men have a faster metabolism than woman which protects against weight gain.
It is certainly true that men have a higher metabolism than women by about 300 calories a day. But while it used to be true that women gain more weight as they age, men have done a remarkable job catching up in recent years, so this higher metabolism doesn't automatically protect men against weight gain. Men need to keep an eye on calorie intake, too, if they want to stop piling on the pounds. Source: Susan B. Roberts, Ph.D.. Iron90 Workplace Wellness: A Culture of Health and Wellness
Question: What will it cost your organization if its does not put in place an effective Health and Wellness Program?
Recent reports suggests that employer health insurance costs may increase as much as 15% each year.
Employers understand that an effective Workplace Wellness Program is not a gym membership. Rather its a comprehensive program that creates an ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS. An effective wellness program eliminates illness by focusing on their root causes namely, lifestyle and weight gain.
"Consider this: Right now, some 75 percent of health care cost is accounted for by heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and obesity. What these five diseases have in common is that they are largely preventable and even reversible by changes in nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle."
-United States Senator Tom Harkin, June 25, 2009, Washington Post

Anti-Aging Formula: The Iron90 Lifestyle
"I am older yet much leaner and faster since starting Iron90."
-Annette Holmes,
Ironbody of the Month, November 2009
Annette's Pre-Iron90 Times:
May 2009 5K: Pace 12:05 Per Mile: I completed a 5k in May - my first in maybe a year, and it was ridiculously hard. It took me 37 minutes and 15 seconds to complete the 3.1 mile course- a 12:05 per mile pace.
June 2009 5K: Pace 12:28 Per Mile: In June I ran another 5k and my time got worse! It took me 38:42 - a pace of 12:28 per mile
Annette's Post Iron90 Times:
August 2009 5K: Pace 12:14 Per Mile:
In August I ran my third race of the summer and my time fell in the middle. That 5k took 38 minutes for a pace of 12:14. At that point I had been on the Iron90 program for two weeks.
October 2009 5K: Pace 9:59 Per Mile: On October 11, I ran my next 5k. 83 days into the Iron90 program, my 5k took me 31 minutes, a race pace of 9:59! I had shaved 6 minutes 15 seconds off my time- ran the whole thing with ease, and felt great when I was finished- not exhausted!
November 2009 10K: Pace 9:58 Per Mile: On November 8th, I ran a 10k. It took me 61 minutes, a personal best. My pace was 9:58. I ended up walking with my friend some as she was overheating. Had I just ran on ahead without her, I am sure I would have come in less than an hour, but I am very happy since I finished easily at an easy pace. |
