Dr. Jo's quick tips to keep YOU healthy, sane, and productive all week long.
|
Greetings!
Last weekend we were show shoeing in the Boise National Forest (outside Boise, ID) and yesterday morning John and I were walking along the Cocoa Beach surf watching dolphins, surfers, and paddleboarders ride the early morning waves. Talk about divergent activities, eh? While I grew up in New England and still enjoy ice skating, sledding, and skiing, that was my first time to go snow shoeing. Check out my rented snow shoes in the picture to the right. They're way different than I remember as a kid - no tennis-racket-looking shoes anymore. What fun things do you do to "play" (and burn calories) during the winter? Send an email to contact@drjo.com and let me know what you do for fun. Please include a picture and a few lines about why you do what you do. Have a great week. Stay warm! Dr. Jo |

Speed Up Skiing
Last week, in response to my request to hear your stories about how YOU "play", I received this note from reader, Kathy Searles: "There is plenty of truth to the cliche about the exhilaration of "breathing the clean, crisp air!" Outdoor activities keep me from feeling mentally and physically stale during the winter months. "Playing in the snow" helps to rekindle a childlike sense of fun and wonder. I can indulge in a (fairly!) safe thrill of speed when I'm sledding or downhill skiing. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing take me into the woods where I might not otherwise get to see some of nature's winter beauty. The winter sports all seem to use muscles that my gym workouts don't, but they feel like fun, not work! And, staying warm is easier than even with today's light weight insulating and moisture proof fabrics.
"Here's a picture of me downhill skiing in Paganella in Italy last year. This trip was a bit of a fluke; and I am pretty much a novice skier. I attended a fund raising auction held by Olympic skier Body Miller, and nobody was bidding on the ski trip to Italy. My husband is a great skier, so I put down the minimum bid and got the trip!" |

Food Cravings Even Bees Do It Last month I was speaking to an audience about food addictions - what causes them and how to get them under control. Do you think you're the only one that likes sweets? In the program I discussed some research that babies (humans, rats, and chimpanzees) seem to prefer the taste of sweet over bitter foods. After the program ended, an audience member shared how even bees go out of their way (a very long way) to find the sweetest source - even when it's not healthy. The bee keepers only found out after the bees came back from the hives with bright red bellies. Can you guess where the bees were going for food? Read this very interesting story in this New York Times article.

Slow Down Enjoy Life
When I was in high school, I couldn't wait for college. In college, I couldn't wait to get a "real job." And, through the years there were even more difficult times when I couldn't wait to get through that period, too. Perhaps this quote was written for me:
"For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."
