Dr. Jo's quick tips to keep YOU healthy, sane, and productive all week long.

Greetings!

I'm always looking for different ways that people "play" (I don't like the word "exercise"). This head on handsweek I'm reporting on two very different ways that people stay in shape. My Atlanta friend likes running in Hell (yes, you read that right...you'll have to read the story below) while Sherry here in Orlando, a retired massage therapist, teaches the Tai Chi she practiced growing up in China. So, the answer to the question in the subject line of your email?... both Hell and Tai Chi can keep you in shape.

What fun things do you do to "play" (and burn calories) during the winter? Send an email to contact@drjo.com and let me know what you do for fun. Please include a picture and a few lines about why you do what you do.

Have a great week. Stay warm!

Dr. Jo's No Big Deal:

No Big Deal

Is 2011 the year you will finally take off the extra weight? If you know WHAT to do, but just can't seem to follow through, this book is for you.

The book title comes from the people I interviewed for this book. These are people who have lost weight and kept it off. They told me, "Oh, it's no big deal, all I did was..."

Speed Up
Getting Dirty in Hell

My friend, Daniel, goes to Hell every DWDyear...Hell, Michigan that is. He and his buddies, and now his boys run a 62.5 mile relay that travels through the woods (and not a trail), water and mud. It's called Dancing with Dirt (DWD).

When I asked him "why", he told me, "We first chose DWD to try something different.  We each had run marathons and were looking for something new and different.  We had so much fun running the relay that we've done it for 7 years in a row as a team.  The relay is 62.5 miles and you are supposed to run it with 5 people.  Our first year, one runner became sick and so we ran it with four.  As a tradition, we have done it the same way every year - - shorthanded.  Sometimes with only 3 because others opted (or were dared ) to run the 31 mile Ultra.

We chose to run it our second year because we had so much fun the first.  It was quite an experience running in a relay because running is normally such a solo sport.  When you know someone with fresh legs is waiting on you, it helps motivate you to keep going.  The main thing that keeps me running it even though I moved out of the area is the camaraderie.  We camp out the night before and after the race and follow traditions we started based on the first year.  Like all my running, I also do it just because I can.  I recognize that some day will arrive when I no longer can.  Until that day, I do."

Slow Down
Tai Chi

Thirty years ago, walking through the Golden Tai ChiGate Park in San Francisco, I saw a large group of people practicing TaiChi. I was facinated at these slow, dance-like movements and never forgot about the mesmorizing effect it had on me. Though I never tried it...until last week.

Sherry at my local community center (on the far right), led a couple dozen of us through the one hour program. Though I've been taking yoga for the past three years, I was surprised at how tired my arms were afterwards. But, oooh, was it a very relaxing experience.

The class was led in three sets with soft Chinese music playing. In between the sets, people hugged and talked with their friends. Several of them came over to me to introduce themselves - very welcoming experience. I think I'll go back for more.

Eat On the Go
Lemony Lift

Lara bars are one of my favorite food bars. Lemon LaraMany of the flavors are made of simply fruit and nuts. I just tried a new flavor called, "Lemon Bar" and it's delicious. The ingredients are simply dates, cashews, almonds, lemon juice concentrate and natural lemon flavor. Not for everyone though...my husband said it reminded him of fruit cake (which he doesn't like). Frankly, I don't like fruit cake either but I love the simple taste of Lara's.
Each of the above articles are designed to educate you about research or what I or others do to stay healthy, sane, and productive. Always check with your medical doctor and other health professionals (including a registered dietitian) before starting any new diet or exercise program.
