Quick tips to keep YOU healthy, sane, and productive all week long.
|
Greetings!
Just back from a quick trip to Monterey, CA where I presented, "What Every Woman Wants - great legs, more energy, and peace of mind" at a woman's only conference. Hello to all of you woman joining my enewsletter list for the first time today! On Saturday, I took the opportunity to enjoy the chilly temperatures (well, it was chilly coming from Orlando) and walked for miles along the bay. There I observed people playing in the sand, flying kites, and boating. I enjoyed watching the seals frolicking in the water and loudly sounding their presence.
I also noticed a line of demarcation in the city. The athletically-minded people were on the 15 mile paved recreation path biking, rollerblading, and running. And, on Fisherman's Wharf and at Cannery Row, there were crowds of overweight people enthusiastically testing samples of Clam Chowder, indulging on double scooped waffled cones, and crowding the candy shops. I'm curious...which crowd would I find you in? On the path indulging your eyes and ears on the sights and sounds of the gorgeous bay? Or on Fisherman's Wharf indulging your taste buds? Hmmm.
Have a fabulous week! Dr. Jo

Eat Out:
Smaller Plate, Smaller Belly Dr. Brian Wansink, Director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab and author of the book, "Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than with Think We Do," offers plenty of research that demonstrates that:
- the more we are served, the more we eat
- the bigger the serving utensil and plate/bowl, the more we serve ourselves
- the bigger the plate we are served on, the more we eat
Therefore, it behooves you to trade in your kitchen plates and bowls for smaller ones. I enjoy indulging in my favorite dessert - Ghiradelli's Double Chocolate Brownies with chocolate chip ice cream...in an espresso cup. Aaah, what sheer pleasure it is to savor every bite with a tiny espresso spoon! While eating out, you will not only eat less - without feeling deprived if you:
- split your restaurant meal with a friend
- ask for the doggie bag with dinner (even if you can't take it home with you). Put half away before you eat the other half. Out of sight, out of mind
- if you already know the reputation of the restaurant, ask the server to serve you just half - on a smaller plate. Think about this for desserts, too.

Eat Out Wendy's Garden Sensation Salads
Have you tried them yet? Wendy's now has four new Garden Sensation Salads. In addition to the full size salads, they are also the first fast food restaurant to offer half size portions of their salads (Wahoo!). The new salads include:
- Baja Salad - Wendy's chili poured atop 11 different types of lettuces and served with guacamole, pico de gallo and a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese. Skip the dressing - you won't miss it because there's plenty of flavor in the other ingredients
- Apple Pecan Chicken Salad - chunks of grilled chicken, red and green apples, savory pecans, and real blue cheese crumbles atop 11 different types of lettuce greens. Served with a pomegranate vinaigrette.
- BLT Cobb - Grilled chicken, Applewood Smoked Bacon, blue cheese crumbles, and hard boiled egg atop 11 different types of lettuces. You might want to ask for the lower fat ranch dressing to save 50 calories.
- Spicy Chicken Caesar Salad (request grilled chicken instead and save 100 calories). A simple blend of chicken, romaine lettuce and shaved Asiago cheese.

Speed Up:
Boating...without a Motor
As a avid kayaker, I enjoy the peacefulness of gliding over the water...and watching the birds and dolphins (or alligators...depending on which body of water I'm on). Though if you don't get on the water early, the experience can be ruined by the noise and sometimes dangerous proximity of motorized boats and jet skis...and the nauseating smell of fuel.
This weekend, while walking along the Monterey bay, I appreciated the silence of the many boats on the water. I watched two middle aged men in helmets and short kayaks, effortlessly riding the waves. I also spotted this local high school sailing team practicing. Brrr. Although sailing isn't going to burn as many calories as the active kayakers, considering the chilly 53 degree water (and air only in the 60's), not to mention the brisk winds, I would imagine these kids were still getting a good workout. Boating without a motor is a thrilling experience. | |

Sing Away Your Negative Attitude!
How's your attitude? Does your attitude excite you and everyone around you? Good for you. Or does your attitude exhaust you - and put off others? Perhaps you need an attitude adjustment.
How? Come up with a personal "Theme Song." When you just can't think of anything positive, search for a song to inspire you. Once you start singing it in your head, it will be hard to get it out of your brain. And, since you can't think two things at one time, the inspiring song will take the place of the negative thoughts.
Here are some song ideas suggested by some of my audience participants:
- The Fighter (when you and another are butting heads)
- I will Survive (going through a divorce, maybe?)
- Working 9 to 5 (just trying to make it through the work day)
- Don't Worry, Be Happy (anytime)
- You're Too Sexy for Your... (if you have to deal with an uppity person)
- R.E.S.P.E.C.T. (when you don't feel like you're getting any respect)
What's your theme song - and what situation does it help you with? Send me an email to contact@drjo.com. |
