Eat In:
Getting into a Breakfast Habit
While many people skip breakfast to "save calories" for later in the day, research shows that people who eat breakfast are leaner. And, kids who eat breakfast are more focused at school. So, breakfast really IS important. Don't like breakfast? Here are some tips:
- Not hungry for breakfast? Then, stop eating earlier in the evening. If you eat all the way until bedtime, it's no wonder you're not hungry for breakfast. Start with a one hour before bedtime cut-off, then build to a few hours. Trust me, after a few days you'll be hungry for breakfast.
- Don't like breakfast foods? Well, then don't eat breakfast foods. Leftover pizza tastes great in the morning. What about a turkey sandwich?
- Breakfast make you nauseous? Then skip the cooked breakfasts (sometimes it's those smells that turn off people) and go with cereal or a fruit smoothie instead.
- No time? Then, grab some grapes and a healthy granola bar to enjoy at your desk.
See, there's really no excuse not to eat breakfast! |
Slow Down:
Call Mom for a Virtual Hug
"Mom, they switched my professor on me!" That's the call I got late last night after my daughter printed off her college class schedule. Seems that her favorite English teacher is no longer teaching and she was assigned another unknown teacher. English classes, though required courses, are not her favorite. We talked about different class and teacher options and she finally settled down.
A few minutes later she sent me a text: "Thks so much 4 ur help. Ur the best mom ever." Reminds me of a research study I just read about. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that a "mother's voice is as comforting as a hug, lowering levels of stress-inducing cortisol." So, when you're stressed, give mom a call! |

Eat Out:
Strategies for HUGE Desserts
On my recent trip to San Antonio, I walked the riverwalk and found a restaurant that still serves the infamous Kangaroo Court cheesecake. That dense cheesecake was always one of my favorite desserts, going back 20 years ago (or more)!
So, I took a piece back to the conference I was working and found a diet scale (it was a diabetes conference). Turns out the cheesecake weighed in at 10 ounces! Since cheesecake has about 110 calories an ounce, that translated to 1100 calories a slice. Yikes!
Needless to say, I didn't eat the whole thing. But, since most restaurant desserts are equally loaded with calories, what is a person to do. Here are some ideas:
- Buy one dessert and share it with everyone at the table. Let's face it, those first few bites are really the best, anyway!
- Cut the dessert in a few pieces...then just eat one piece (smoosh the remaining pieces to make them non-tempting)
- Ask the server to cut you just a thin piece. Yes, they will do that.
But remember, if you're going to eat desserts, it's important to control the portions to fit into your daily requirement and....eat it slowly so you can savor every bite! | |
Power Up: Good, Clean Fun!
With my enewsletters, I keep encouraging you to find activities that would help you burn calories, tone muscles, and have fun. But, you know, they don't have to be organized sports, gym classes, or weight training equipment. Sometimes, the best way to stay in shape is to act like a kid and just plain have fun. My nephews reminded me of that as I watched them jump into the chilly river in their hometown in New Hampshire. How about a game of kickball? |
