Quick tips to keep YOU healthy, sane, and productive all week long.
|
Greetings!
When people talk about vacations, especially cruises, they quantify their fun by boasting about how many pounds they gained...as if every fun vacation has to end with a few extra pounds. It doesn't have to be that way. I keep my weight under control on vacations by enjoying my favorite foods, in moderation, and keeping up the daily movement. For example, I just returned from 9 days in New England/New York visiting family and having fun. Here's a picture of our hike up Mt Washington, NH with my brothers Mike and Joe...plus their kids and their dogs. Though we've successfully hiked "The Mountain" dozens of time before, this time we were sent back down by low visibility and 40 mph winds. Next time... In addition, John and I walked all over New York City, walked across the Hudson River on the old railroad bridge in Poughkeepsie (now a state park), into the Flume in Franconia Notch, NH and ran a road race in Stratham, NH. Make sure you have plenty of fun on all your vacations by planning some movement activity on all your trips! |

Eat In:
A New "Cup of Jo"
While I was growing up, Mom and Dad brewed pot after pot of coffee. The constant smell of coffee made me nauseated. So it's no wonder that I don't drink coffee. My morning "Cup of Joe" has fluctuated between hot tea, juice, milk, or just water. I just found a new "Cup of Jo"...Fruit Milk. It all started with this overly ripe nectarine that I couldn't bear to throw it away so I blended it with a cup of skim milk. Mmmm. Way better than any powdered flavor. Other great drinks include Strawberry Milk, Banana Milk, Papaya Milk and more. Way more nutritious than your usual "Cup of Joe." |
| Slow Down:
I have to admit, I can be a baby sometimes. After hurting my ribs, I had a hard time taking the advice of my doctor to "rest". Rest? Me?
It was hard emotionally when I got laid off and then years later when I got a divorce. Are you dealing with a setback right now? Bad news doesn't have to be devastating if you remember one of my favorite quotes:
"Setbacks are only ever devastating when one thinks they'll last forever. And yet they never do." (unknown)
So, when life hands you lemons, remind yourself that this, too, shall pass...then make lemonade. |

Snacks:
Nabisco 100 Calorie Snacks
We flew Southwest to Hartford on our recent trip. While they still gave out peanuts, the flight attendants also handed out 100 calorie Nabisco snacks. And, I have to say I was impressed with the taste.
I had tried the cookie packs in the past and just didn't appreciate them. But, I enjoyed the Kraft Cheese Nips Thin Crisps on one flight and the Honey Maid Cinnamon Thin Crisps Cheese Nips on the returning flight. You might want to try these tasty, filling little snacks. | |
Power Up: Take a Hike
As I mentioned in my opening letter, I love to hike. There's so much nature out there to see... and there are way more places than you can imagine. Start your search at these places: Then, search within your city and county. I've lived in a lot of places and I'm always surprised at all the great places to go walking, hiking, and biking. Don't want to go alone? Log onto www.meetup.com and search for hiking, biking, running, kayaking...groups in your neck of the woods. |
